Maybe your right. Jeremiah and the 3 other founders of the Ranch only murdered Qaletqa Walker's Father and Uncle, before the apocalypse began.
He didn't act as an antagonist agaisnt Madison, trough...
Shouldn't the antagonist of the story be the one who's the direct enemy of the protagonist? Until his death, Jeremiah and Maddie were on the same group...

The ranch leader is a “fucking cunt” for leaving a young woman alone to die in the dessert because she wasn’t white.

Jeremiah had to die or else Walker and his people wouldn't stop attacking the ranch!
You've got to be pretty racist to still hold on to such ignorant views in an apocalyptic world where such things are completely trivial. He referred to the Native Americans as "savages", which implies that they are not civilized, in a world that is no longer civilized as a whole. Everyone scratches and claws for food and water now, even he couldn't live off of his reserves forever. He taught these ignorant values to his son, who took every single chance he could to call the Native Americans some kind of derogatory or misinformed term. Jeremiah indirectly imposed these views on his community as well, and told Madison that he could feel her "liberal judgment" when she gave him a dirty look for it.Â
If I disagree with your political views, that shouldn't have a bearing on our relation to one another as human beings. Morals should not be tied to politcal views. If you need help from your fellow man in times of crisis, that decision shouldn't be based on what you look like, or where you come from, or who you voted for. And that's just the idealogical side of it, before even getting into him killing native americans for land that was not rightfully his, his drinking and subsequent treatment of his family, and willingness to wage war and risk lives rather than compromise and make the two groups stronger as a collective.Â
If you want to be SUPER technical about it, then his actions stood directly in the way of our protagonists' goals, which was survival against a major pending threat. Nick, Madison, and Alicia were new residents of the ranch, that immediately got thrown into the conflict with the Native Americans that was gradually heating up. Things were soon coming to a head, and while our protagonists wanted to talk it out, Jeremiah insisted there was no negotiating despite the price of his people's lives. Spells a pretty bad dude in most cases.Â
That's true and defines Jeremiah's character in a lot of ways. But this is important: when you analize a racist's behaviour, you need to keep in mind that they don't think their positions or ideologies are "ignorant" or "trivial". It's their own tactic of survival and they'll feel in the right side of the story. Until the very end, Jeremiah was eager to continue with his ideals and his ways of doing things. He was a man of convictions... bad convictions, in general, but stills...
I just want to think that this old guy was a little more that just a racist apocalyptic cowboy.

So? He could have saved the water and just let Ofelia died of thirst but he didn't. Just because he is racist and didn't take her back to ranch doesn't mean he is a fucking cunt.Â
