Days Gone Bye

  • Episode # - 1
  • Season Episode # - 1
  • Summary: Sheriff's Deputy Rick Grimes is walking around a gas station parking lot looking for fuel. He finds a young girl walking through the gas station who turns out to be a zombie. He shoots her in the head as she approaches him. The show then flashes back to when he is critically wounded in a vicious gunfight and slips into a coma. He later awakens in an abandoned hospital to find a world occupied by the walking dead. Grimes finds his way home, only to discover that his wife Lori and their young son Carl have disappeared. He is upset and delusional, but encounters a father and son, Morgan and Duane Jones, who have holed up in a neighbor's house on Rick's street, and learns that the CDC has set up a quarantine zone in Atlanta, Georgia. Rick departs for Atlanta in order to track down his family, leaving Morgan and Duane with some weapons and a police walkie-talkie, which he will broadcast periodically to at dawn to inform them of his location. Elsewhere, Lori has begun a romantic relationship with Rick's old partner and best friend, Shane Walsh (who has told her Rick is dead), and along with Carl and a small band of other survivors, is in hiding in a rural area outside Atlanta. Rick arrives in Atlanta and is set upon by an enormous horde of "walkers". He survives by slipping into a tank and sealing himself inside. An unknown person sends a transmission to the tank's radio, saying "Hey you, dumbass. Yeah, you in the tank. Cozy in there?"
  • First Appearance of: Emma Bell as Amy

Guts

  • Episode # - 2
  • Season Episode # - 2
  • Summary: Rick escapes from the tank aided by Glenn, the voice he had heard over the radio. Rick and Glenn meet up with Glenn's friends, a scavenging team of survivors that is a subset of the larger group that includes Lori, Carl, and Shane. Glenn's friends inform him that Rick's shooting spree has brought their hideout in a department store to the attention of the walkers. Emotions run high in the group, particularly between a black man, T-Dog, and an unhinged person, Merle Dixon, which leads Rick to handcuff Merle to a pipe on the store's roof. As the walkers attempt to break into the previously safe store, brief radio contact is made with Shane and Lori's group who, unaware of Rick's presence, decide they are unable to help. Rick and Glenn hatch an escape plan and execute it by covering themselves in a "terminated" walker's blood and guts (to mask their scent as they move amongst the walkers), and making their way to a box truck. Glenn draws the walkers' attention away from the store by racing around in a Dodge Challenger and sounding its alarm. The group escapes the city, along with Glenn, leaving Merle chained to the pipe on the roof after T-Dog trips over a bag of tools and accidentally drops the handcuff key down a drain.
  • First Appearances of: Michael Rooker as Merle Dixon, Andrew Rothenberg as Jim, Juan Gabriel Pareja as Morales, Jeryl Prescott Sales as Jacqui, and IronE Singleton as T-Dog Douglas

  • Season Episode # - 3
  • Summary: Returning to the camp with the department store survivors, Rick has an emotional reunion with his wife and son. Soon afterwards however, despite encountering a walker near camp, Rick decides to go against Shane's advice and return to Atlanta to retrieve Merle Dixon and the bag Rick had dropped in the street when surrounded by zombies, which contained guns and a walkie-talkie he needs to warn Morgan against going to Atlanta. Rick is accompanied by Merle's upset and distrusting younger brother Daryl Dixon as well as Glenn and T-Dog. Lori warns Shane to stay away from her family now that Rick has returned. Rick's return is a surprise, since Shane had told her Rick had died in the hospital. Tensions run high in the camp between a woman, Carol, and her abusive husband, Ed. A fight breaks out when Ed hits Carol and threatens the other women, and Shane takes out his anger on Ed by nearly beating him to death. The rescue team makes it to Atlanta and, once they are on the department store roof, they discover a hacksaw, Merle's dismembered hand, and blood on his handcuffs, but he is nowhere to be found.

Vatos

  • Episode # - 4
  • Season Episode # - 4
  • Summary: While still in search of Merle, the group tries to retrieve the bag of guns that Rick had dropped on his previous visit to Atlanta. However, the group is attacked by several living Latino men who also seek the weapons. The group manages to grab an injured attacker, but several other attackers escape in a vehicle, taking Glenn with them as a hostage. After interrogating their own hostage, Rick and the others learn the location of their attackers' hideout, and head there hoping to make a prisoner trade. They are rebuffed by the Latinos, who demand the bag of guns along with a prisoner exchange. The threat of bloodshed is avoided when an elderly woman (the grandmother of one of the Latinos) disrupts the confrontation. Grimes and his men realize that the "thug" image their hosts portray is just a protective front. The Latino "gang" is made up of former employees of a hidden nursing home within which many of its elderly inhabitants are hiding. Rick leaves them some of the guns and the men exchange prisoners and depart. Upon leaving, they discover their van is missing and conclude that Merle has stolen it. Back at camp, a large group of walkers ventures up the hill and takes the survivors by surprise. Several members are killed, including Andrea's younger sister Amy, and Carol's husband Ed. Rick and the rescuers return to camp just in time to kill the remaining walkers.

Wildfire

  • Episode # - 5
  • Season Episode # - 5
  • Summary: While the dead are being buried, Andrea remains protective of Amy's body until it reawakens as a walker, whereupon Andrea then apologizes and kills Amy again. Jim reveals that he was bitten by a walker in the fight, and the living members of the group decide to take him to the CDC, though there are signs of conflict between Shane and Rick, as Shane believes the trip to the CDC is a dead end. One family from the group splits away, deciding to return home to Birmingham, Alabama, and the remaining members depart for the CDC. On the way there, while making repairs to the RV, Jim decides he wants the group to leave him so he can be reunited with his dead family (either figuratively in the hereafter or, perhaps, literally as a walker). The group continues on, arriving at the CDC building, where a scientist, Edwin Jenner, who isolated himself while running tests on the walker virus, has just lost his only virus test sample and is considering suicide. When the group prepares to leave, thinking the building is empty, Rick notices the camera moving and begs for his group to be allowed in. The doors open as the group of survivors looks on, astonished.

TS-19

  • Episode # - 6
  • Season Episode # - 6
  • Summary:  In a flashback to the initial walker outbreak, Shane attempts to move Rick out of the hospital but is unable to do so because of soldiers executing the hospital staff and walkers breaking into the building. Thinking Rick is dead, all Shane can do is barricade Rick's door and flee the hospital. In the present, the group enjoys an ephemeral normality amid the comforts of hot showers and wine. A drunk Shane seeks to defend his past actions to Lori, telling her that he had been certain that Rick was dead. He tries to force himself on her sexually but she fights him off. The next morning, Dr. Jenner explains to the group, using a computer model called Test Subject 19, the process in the brain that takes place when a person is bitten and then partially revived as a walker. Subsequently the group discovers that a timer in the lab is counting down to the exhaustion of the building's power supply and that when it hits zero the building will "decontaminate" by self-destructing. Dr. Jenner locks them in, telling them that such an end is humane, and their deaths will be swift and painless. The group, however, believes they can survive, and attempts to break out. Rick convinces Jenner to release them; Jenner does so and tells him something inaudible before the group flees. One of the members, Jacqui, tells them she will stay no matter what, and die with Jenner. Andrea chooses the same fate, but Dale says if she stays then he will stay and eventually convinces her to leave with them. Carol gives Rick a grenade she found in his clothes when she was doing laundry, and they blow up one of the windows and narrowly escape the building before it explodes, and then proceed to drive off.

What Lies Ahead

  • Episode # - 7
  • Season Episode # - 1
  • Summary:  The group heads to Fort Benning, but is blocked by a pileup of vehicles on the interstate and further delayed when the RV blows a radiator hose. A depressed Andrea expresses resentment towards Dale for not being allowed to die in a way of her choosing, since he forced her to save him from the CDC explosion; contrarily, he feels he saved her. Shane tells Lori he has decided to leave the group when he has the chance. The group narrowly avoids most of a herd of walkers passing the pileup, but two of them chase Sophia into the woods. Rick distracts and kills her pursuing walkers, but she goes missing in the process. During a search for Sophia, the group stops at a rural church, at which point Andrea privately asks Shane if she can join him when he leaves the group. As the search continues, Rick, Shane, and Carl come upon a buck; as Carl approaches the animal a gunshot passes through the deer into him.

In the present, Carl has been accidentally shot by a hunter named Otis. Otis directs Rick, Shane, and Carl to the home of veterinarian Hershel Greene, who manages to remove one of six bullet fragments. One of Hershel's daughters, Maggie, is sent to Sophia's search party and returns with Lori to the Greene home. Rick gives blood to Carl while Otis and Shane go to the former FEMA aid station at a walker-infested high school to gather urgently needed medical supplies. Dale and T-Dog wait at the RV; Dale fears that T-Dog may have contracted an infection from his injury, and the two search for antibiotics. Shane and Otis find the necessary supplies at the FEMA aid station; however they are forced to barricade themselves in the school's entrance after walkers surround them.

Save the Last One

  • Episode # - 9
  • Season Episode # - 3
  • Summary:  Hershel tells Lori and Rick that he might need to perform Carl's surgery without a respirator if Shane and Otis do not return soon with the necessary medical supplies. Daryl and Andrea return to the forest to search for Sophia, and Daryl shares a childhood memory of being lost in the woods. The two then come upon a zombie hanging from a tree, where he had attempted to kill himself before transformation and ended up having his legs eaten; Daryl kills the zombie, but only after Andrea agrees to answer his question concerning whether she wants to continue living or kill herself. Glenn and T-Dog arrive at the Greene home, where T-Dog's injury is treated while Glenn and Maggie talk about faith. Lori contemplates letting Carl die to end his suffering from living in the world as it now is, while Rick holds to the belief that Carl may yet live in a better future. Meanwhile, Shane and Otis fight to escape the high school, only to face more walkers at every turn. Just as they are about to run out of ammo, an injured Shane incapacitates Otis, so he can escape the walkers. Shane then takes the supplies from Otis and watches as he is ripped apart by the horde of walkers. Shane returns alone to the Greene home with the critical medical supplies just in time for Carl's surgery. Shane misleads everyone about Otis' death and shaves his head, both as a sign that he has completely changed his way of thinking in this new world and in order to eliminate the one thing (his hair) Otis was able to grasp when the crucial moment came.

Cherokee Rose

  • Episode # - 10
  • Season Episode # - 4
  • Summary:  Dale, Daryl, Andrea and Carol arrive at the Greene home and set up camp as Carl recovers. Since Shane is still injured and Rick is weak from blood loss, Daryl decides to search alone for Sophia. He does not find her, but instead finds a Cherokee rose (a Native American symbol for the tears of mothers on the Trail of Tears), and gives it to Carol. Hershel takes Rick on a tour, and tells him that he and his group should leave the property after Sophia is found and Carl heals. Rick begs Hershel to reconsider, and Hershel says he will consider letting them stay if they follow his rules. While Dale and T-Dog are retrieving water from a nearby well, they realize that there is a walker inside. Since the survivors cannot kill it, as doing so might infect the water, they decide Glenn will act as bait to snare the walker, so that it can be taken out of the well. They succeed in roping and raising the walker, but just as it is being pulled out of the well, its legs and internal organs break off and spill back into the well, thoroughly infecting the water. T-Dog then kills the walker. Maggie and Glenn head to a local pharmacy for supplies, where Maggie offers to have sex with Glenn and he accepts. Glenn retrieves a pregnancy test, requested by Lori; Lori later uses it and realizes that she is pregnant.

While out searching for Sophia, Daryl finds her doll, but subsequently falls off a ridge and is badly injured. He has hallucinations of his brother Merle but snaps out of it in time to deal with two attacking walkers. He then finds the strength to climb up the ridge and return to the farm. As he approaches the farm limping, he is mistaken for a walker and is shot and wounded by Andrea, who was told not to use the rifle. Secrets

  • Episode # - 12
  • Season Episode # - 6
  • Summary:  The group practices their shooting skills and Andrea performs well. Glenn tells Dale about the walkers being kept in the barn. Dale confronts Hershel about the barn and Hershel explains that the walkers in the barn are family members and are "still people"; that they are merely sick and are being contained so they can be cured in the future. Lori sends Glenn and Maggie to the pharmacy to get morning-after pills. Maggie gets attacked by a walker and Glenn kills it. In a fury, Maggie gives Lori the pills and yells at her for almost getting them killed. Glenn tells Lori that Rick should be involved in the decision and gives Lori prenatal vitamins. Lori takes the pills, but forces herself to vomit them up. Shane and Andrea go looking for Sophia in a nearby town and are surrounded by walkers. Andrea and Shane kill enough of them to flee safely. Andrea, feeling empowered, comes on to Shane on the way back and they engage in sexual relations. When they arrive at camp, Dale recognizes something is going on between them. Out of concern for Andrea, he confronts Shane about what really happened the night Otis died, as Dale seems to have figured out that Shane killed him in order to save himself. Shane threatens Dale. Rick finds the empty morning-after pill package and confronts Lori. They debate the ethical decision of bringing the unborn child into a world infested with walkers. Lori confesses to having had a sexual relationship with Shane when she thought Rick was dead.

Pretty Much Dead Already

  • Episode # - 13
  • Season Episode # - 7
  • Summary:  When Glenn reveals to the group that walkers are being kept in the barn, Rick discusses the matter with Hershel; Rick also tries to convince him to let the group stay, especially since his wife is pregnant. Rick tells Shane that Lori is pregnant and Shane confronts her, knowing that her child may be his. Dale tries to hide the group's guns in the swamp but fails when Shane catches him. Against Hershel's and Rick's wishes, Shane hands the guns out to members of the group. Hershel tricks Rick into helping him recover some walkers stuck in quicksand, and tells him that his group can stay so long as they do not kill the walkers (Hershel believes they are sick people, and not monsters). As they return, Shane sees the captured walkers and becomes enraged. He repeatedly shoots Hershel's captured walker in the chest, asking why it doesn't die if it is a living sick person. He then shoots it in the head as Hershel looks on. Shane breaks open the barn door, forcing the group to shoot all of the captured walkers. Thinking all the walkers are dead, the stunned group watches as the missing Sophia comes out of the barn as a walker. Rick remorsefully steps forward and shoots her in the head.

Nebraska

  • Episode # - 14
  • Season Episode # - 8
  • Summary:  After the destruction of his family, Hershel demands that Rick and his group leave immediately. Shane accuses Rick of being just as delusional as Hershel, saying that Hershel knew about Sophia the whole time and hid her from the group. Dale tells Andrea to be careful about her relationship with Shane, since Dale knows what kind of person Shane is and now wants him gone from the group. He also reveals this to Lori, including his assumption about Otis' fate. Hershel goes missing, but Rick and Glenn find him in the town bar, drinking and lamenting the folly of his hope of a cure for his family. After Rick convinces him to return to his family, two men named Dave and Tony enter the bar and request refuge at Hershel's farm. Rick, Glenn and Hershel learn from the two men that Fort Benning is overrun. When Rick flatly refuses them safe haven, Dave draws his firearm, but Rick is quicker on the draw and kills him and Tony. Hershel's daughter Beth is rendered unconscious from an unknown ailment, leading Lori to drive into town to retrieve Hershel. Lori hits a walker on the road and flips the car. The episode ends with Lori's fate unknown and Shane and T-Dog setting fire to the dead walkers from the barn.

In town, Hershel shoots one attacker, who is then killed by walkers. Shane wants to kill the man, but Rick says that he needs to think about it first; their disagreement leads to a fight, which attracts a group of walkers. All three barely make it out alive. Back at the farm, Beth has given up on life and is contemplating suicide. Both Lori and Maggie attempt to talk her out of it and want to place her under watch, but Andrea says Beth needs to find her own reasons to keep living. Beth locks herself in the bathroom and uses a piece of broken mirror to slit her wrist, but Lori manages to break open the door before she bleeds out. Maggie and Lori are furious with Andrea for not keeping an eye on Beth; Andrea defends herself by saying that Beth no longer wants to commit suicide and Hershel was able to save her. Judge, Jury, Executioner

  • Episode # - 17
  • Season Episode # - 11
  • Summary:  While in the group's custody, the prisoner, Randall, is tortured by Daryl for information. Randall reveals that his old survivor group contained thirty male members and some of those members once raped a pair of teenaged female survivors and forced their father to watch, which convinces the group that letting Randall live is a huge risk. Dale, horrified that the group is actually considering executing Randall, tries to convince everybody that they must not sacrifice their humanity. Meanwhile, Carl wanders into the forest and finds a walker trapped in mud. Carl tries and fails to kill it, and flees when it starts breaking free from the mud. Back at the farm, Dale fails to convince the group to stop the execution. Rick, Shane, and Daryl take Randall to the barn to execute him, but Rick hesitates when he sees that Carl is watching. He then decides to delay the execution. Meanwhile, Dale encounters a dying cow in the field. When he turns around, he is attacked by a walker and has his stomach ripped open. Daryl kills the walker, and Carl is shocked to see that it was the same one he had failed to kill in the forest. Daryl then mercifully kills Dale in order to end his suffering.

Better Angels

  • Episode # - 18
  • Season Episode # - 12
  • Summary:  The group holds a brief funeral for Dale. Rick asks the group to stay united, despite Dale's warning that the group is "broken." They work together to prepare for the coming winter, by stockpiling supplies and clearing walkers from the surrounding area. However, there is still the issue of what to do with Randall. Rick ultimately decides to honor Dale's memory by sparing Randall's life, and plans to drop him off somewhere far away from the farm. However, Shane frees Randall from the barn and leads him into the forest, where he breaks Randall's neck. Shane then returns to the farm and tells the rest of the group that Randall escaped. Rick, Shane, Glenn, and Daryl go into the forest to track him down. Glenn and Daryl split off from Rick and Shane and encounter Randall, who has somehow turned into a walker, despite the fact that there is no evidence of his having been bitten or scratched. Glenn then kills Randall again, by impaling him through the head with a machete. Meanwhile, Rick tells Shane to admit he plans to murder him. Shane holds Rick at gunpoint and they argue about who would be a better father and husband. Rick talks Shane into putting his gun down. Knowing he has to kill Shane, he stabs him in the heart. Carl arrives and appears to have pulled his gun on Rick, but then aims behind his father and puts a bullet into the head of an undead Shane (who, like Randall, also had no evidence of being bitten, seeming to experience intense and disturbing zombie-like thoughts). Meanwhile, a massive number of walkers, drawn by the gunshots, are shown headed towards them.

Beside the Dying Fire

  • Episode # - 19
  • Season Episode # - 13
  • Summary:  Shortly after Shane's death, a massive horde of walkers attacks the farm. The survivors attempt to fight off the horde, but are quickly overwhelmed. Jimmy and Patricia are killed, and Andrea is inadvertently left behind. The remaining survivors are forced to scatter in the darkness, but eventually reunite at the highway where they left supplies for Sophia. Meanwhile, Andrea is still alive and fleeing from the walkers on foot. She is about to be caught by the walkers when she is rescued by a hooded figure wielding a sword and flanked by two leashed walkers. The other survivors believe that Andrea is a lost cause and decide to search for a new shelter, but their cars begin to run low on gas and they are forced to stop for the night. Confronted with the knowledge that Randall turned into a walker without being bitten, Rick finally reveals to the group what Jenner had told him at the CDC: that everybody is already infected with the virus (meaning they will eventually turn into walkers when they die). He also admits that he killed Shane. With this knowledge, the group's morale begins to plummet, but Rick announces that from now on he's in charge and the group will no longer be run as a democracy, and they will find a safe haven from the walkers. As the camera pulls back, a prison complex is visible nearby.

  • Summary:  After bringing an injured Hershel back to the group's cell block, Rick updates the prisoners on the zombie apocalypse of the previous ten months. The survivors eventually come to an agreement: Rick, Daryl and T-Dog will help clear a cell block for the prisoners to inhabit, in exchange for half of the prison's food stores. While the prisoners hone their combat skills under the supervision of Rick's group by taking out multiple walkers, a prisoner named "Big Tiny" is scratched by a walker. While discussing this development with Rick, the prisoners' leader, Tomas, kills Big Tiny on the spot. After Tomas sets Rick up to die in the next fight with walkers, Rick kills Tomas. Another prisoner, Andrew, attempts to retaliate but finds himself outnumbered and flees into a walker-infested prison yard where Rick leaves him to his fate. Rick, Daryl and T-Dog leave the remaining prisoners, Axel and Oscar, in the promised cell block, and return to their group, where Hershel, who had a brush with death while being watched over by the others, awakens.

  • Summary:  While the group is admiring Hershel's determination to use crutches, they are surprised by a group of walkers moving through the prison compound, and the survivors are separated while fleeing for cover. Rick, Daryl and Glenn return from outside the fences to find that the gate was left open and chains were cut, and Rick immediately suspects Axel and Oscar. However, when more walkers are attracted by the prison alarms, Rick's group has to rely on the prisoners to help them quickly find and shut down the generators. Rick is ambushed in the generator room by Andrew, who lured the walkers in from the other side of the prison. Oscar gets Rick's gun and shoots Andrew, siding with Rick whose group he and Axel want to join. Meanwhile, T-Dog is bitten and sacrifices himself to save Carol, whose head wrap Daryl later finds, leading the group to assume she was also killed. The Suicide King

  • Episode # - 28
  • Season Episode # - 9
  • Summary - Rick and Maggie return to Woodbury to help rescue Daryl. Merle is also rescued, to group's dismay. On the way back to the prison, tensions mount when Glenn and Michonne discover Merle returning with them and they refuse to take Merle back to the prison. Daryl refuses to leave Merle again, and as a result breaks away from Rick's group, even after Rick pleads with him to stay. Rick questions Michonne, who refuses to communicate, thus angering Rick and prompting him to threaten to turn her out on her own once they've patched up her wounds. Back at Woodbury, chaos erupts when all the residents become hostile and frightened and attempt to leave through the compound's front gate. Martinez and other security enforcers block residents from leaving and threaten them at gunpoint. Amid the tension and mass confusion, one resident is bitten by walkers who sneaked in the breach Merle made when he led Rick's group out of the compound. Andrea diffuses the situation and kills both stray walkers, leaving the bitten Woodbury member pleading for help. As townspeople yell that someone should help the bitten resident, stoic Governor appears from his quarters, shoots the bitten member, and returns back inside without ever saying a word. Rick, Michonne, Glenn, and Maggie finally return to the prison and are greeted by Carol and Carl. Tyreese pleads his case to stay, but Rick refuses. Hershel then pulls Rick aside, and respectfully persuades him to accept them into the prison. Rick appears to reconsider, but sees an apparition of Lori on the catwalk above. She is only visible to Rick, whose hallucination and associated angry, violent outbursts frighten the two groups. Tyreese's group begins to scatter and Glenn urges them to leave.

  • Episode # - 29
  • Season Episode # - 10
  • Summary: Michonne watches from the distance as Rick stands outside the fence, alone. In Woodbury, The Governor asks Andrea to take over. "I'm not fit to lead these people," he says. "But you are." Meanwhile, Daryl and Merle bicker in the forest. Daryl pines for life back at the prison, but Merle predicts The Governor is going to slaughter everyone there. Glenn makes an executive decision to fortify the prison against The Governor, despite Hershel's suggestion that they flee. Glenn enlists Carl to help investigate where Tyreese and his group found their way inside. The Governor visits Milton in his lab. He asks if he can still count on Milton's allegiance. Milton reassures The Governor, who then asks him to keep tabs on Andrea. Later, Andrea asks Milton for The Governor's whereabouts. Milton dodges her questions, but raises her suspicions. Back at the prison, Glenn and Carl inform the group that the boiler room is overrun with walkers again. Hershel again advises a retreat, but Glenn ignores him and says he and Maggie will go to the far side of the prison to look for the breach. Glenn finds Maggie alone in her cell. He insists they talk about her encounter with The Governor, and asks if she was raped. "No," she snaps, shoving him away. "Do you feel better?" On the catwalk, Carol and Axel reinforce a fence. Axel tells Carol he was initially sent to prison for holding up a gas station with a toy gun. He bonds with Carol as she shows him how to use a real one. Meanwhile, Merle and Daryl encounter a family of survivors under attack by walkers. Daryl immediately goes to their rescue, killing walkers with his crossbow. Merle half-heartedly assists. When all the walkers are dead, Merle aims his gun at the father and begins rooting through their car, where the mother and a baby are both bawling. Daryl points his crossbow at Merle and instructs the family to drive away, then stalks off, leaving Merle alone. Merle follows Daryl into the forest and chastises him for risking his life to help strangers. They grapple and Daryl's shirt rips, revealing childhood scars from their father's beatings. "I didn't know," Merle says apologetically. Daryl stalks away, telling Merle that he's going back where he belongs. Merle complains that he can't follow him to the prison. "I may be the one that's walkin' away," Daryl says, "but you're the one that's leavin'." Outside the prison, Hershel tries to stop Glenn from going off on his own. "This rage of yours," Hershel says, "it's gonna get you killed." Glenn ignores him and drives off. Hershel calls to a disoriented Rick from the prison fence. "We need you now more than ever," Hershel says. Rick confesses that he's been seeing Lori. "I know it's not really her, but there's got to be a reason," he says, walking back into the forest. In the courtyard, Carol and Axel chat. Suddenly, a bullet hits Axel in the head, killing him instantly. The Governor, stationed at the treeline, lowers his rifle. Rick's group runs for cover as The Governor and his men attack. Gunfire erupts on both sides. A bread truck comes crashing through the prison gate and stops in the yard. The Governor smiles as the back door opens and walkers stream out. The Governor drives off as the survivors struggle with the dead. Outside the fence, Rick is surrounded by walkers, one of which is about to bite him. Suddenly, a crossbow bolt pierces its forehead, signifying Merle and Daryl's arrival. Together, they kill the remaining walkers outside the fence. Momentarily safe, Rick stares darkly into the prison yard, now swarming with walkers.

I Ain't a Judas

  • Episode # - 30
  • Season Episode # - 11
  • Summary:  The survivors regroup in the cell block following The Governor's assault. Rick and Glenn want to stay and face The Governor; Hershel thinks they should flee. Merle, who's locked inside the common room, warns that The Governor has enough guns and manpower to kill them all. Frustrated, Rick tries to leave the room. "Get back here!" Hershel booms. "You once said this isn't a democracy. Now you need to own up to that. And do something." Afterwards, Rick surveys the walker-infested prison yard from the catwalk. Carl joins him and suggests Rick should stop being the leader. "Let Hershel and Daryl handle things," Carl says. "You deserve a rest." In Woodbury, The Governor tells Milton to enlist residents aged thirteen and up to fight. Milton calculates that will give them 35 soldiers. Andrea confronts The Governor about the prison attack, reminding him of his promise to leave Rick alone. The Governor claims Rick shot first. Andrea says she wants to visit the prison to broker a truce. "You go to that prison, stay there," The Governor warns. Outside, Karen complains to Andrea that The Governor is making her 14-year-old asthmatic son fight. Andrea challenges Martinez, but he insists the only way to defend the town is to raise an army. Back at the prison, Rick and the others prepare for battle. Glenn objects to Merle's presence and suggests handing him over to the Governor, but Hershel points out that Merle has valuable military experience. Later, Hershel chats with Merle in his cell and the two bond over their amputations and mutual appreciation of scripture. Merle warns Hershel about The Governor: "He'll save Rick for last so he can watch his family and friends die ugly. That's who you're dealing with." Meanwhile, The Governor surveys Woodbury's new army. When Andrea appeals to him to excuse the asthmatic boy, he ignores her. In the prison cellblock, Carol visits Daryl and expresses relief at his return. "He's your brother, but he's not good for you," she says about Merle. "Don't let him bring you down." Back in Woodbury, Andrea asks Milton to help her escape so she can discuss a truce with Rick. But he balks at the idea of betraying The Governor. In his apartment, The Governor removes the gauze from his eye. He places a patch over the wound as Milton arrives to report on Andrea's request. "She asked for help," The Governor says, "help her." Milton escorts Andrea through the forest, where they capture a walker and hack off its arms and teeth. As they fight off more walkers, they run into Tyreese and his crew. At the prison, Merle tries to make peace with Michonne: "I done a lot of things I ain't proud of," he says. "Hope we can get past it." Michonne glares silently back at him. Milton agrees to take Tyreese and his group to Woodbury. Andrea continues on to the prison with the armless, toothless walker as her "guardian angel." Andrea approaches the prison, where Carl spots her through binoculars. "Are you alone?" Rick yells as she approaches. He shoves her against the fence and searches her. "Welcome back," he says. Rick brings Andrea inside the prison. She insists she's on their side, but Rick has his doubts: "We had that field, courtyard, until your boyfriend tore down the fence with a truck and shot us up," he says. She begs Rick to work out a peaceful agreement, but Hershel doubts The Governor has any desire to negotiate. Outside, Andrea accuses Michonne of turning the group against her. Michonne counters that Andrea is living under the Governor's spell and reveals that he sent Merle to kill her. Michonne says she went back to Woodbury to unmask The Governor, adding, "I knew it would hurt you." Meanwhile, The Governor visits with Tyreese and his group in Woodbury's infirmary. He welcomes them to stay as long as they like, then brings up Rick's group. Tyreese recounts his experience at the prison and offers to join the fight: "Whatever we gotta do to earn our keep," he says. Back at the prison, Andrea cradles Judith as Carol urges her to take action against The Governor. "You need to sleep with him, give him the greatest night of his life," Carol advises. "Get him to drop his guard, and then when he's sleeping, you can end this." Later, Rick gives Andrea a car to return to Woodbury. "Be careful," he says, handing her a gun and a knife. When she arrives in Woodbury, Andrea visits the Governor at home and confesses that she visited the prison. "He sent you back here?" the Governors asks. "No, that was my call," she says. "Because you belong here," he says, kissing her. That evening, Rick tells Daryl and Hershel he's taking Michonne and Carl on a run for more guns the next day. Rick tells Daryl: "Keep an eye on your brother," he says. "If he causes a problem, it's on you." Meanwhile, Andrea lies in bed with The Governor, who's fast asleep. She pulls out her knife and holds it over his sleeping body, but turns away, unable to kill him. She moves over to the window and stares out, the knife still in her hand.

After Daryl and Martinez bond over a walker-killing contest and then smoke a cigarette outside, and Milton and Hershel bond over similar interests, Andrea goes inside to try to encourage a detente between the Governor and Rick. The Governor gives Rick two days to think it over. Rick, Hershel and Daryl make their way back to the prison, while Andrea decides to stay with the Governor. Rick - who assumes the Governor will kill them whether they hand over Michonne or not - does not tell the group the choice he was given; instead he tells them they are going to war, and the Governor wants them dead. Back at Woodbury, The Governor reveals his plan to kill the entire group excepting Michonne. • Summary: - Rick returns to the prison and tells Maggie and Hershel that Carol killed Karen, and thus he sent her off. Meanwhile, in the quarantined cell block, Hershel continues to care for the sick, with Sasha and Glenn assisting him, as the conditions of the infected worsen, with many succumbing to the flu and reanimating as walkers. Despite their dire situation, he maintains optimism and comforts the other people in the quarantined area. The reanimated quickly increase and overrun the cell block, and Hershel, Glenn, Sasha and Lizzie fend for their lives. Hearing the gunshots inside the prison, Maggie rushes to the quarantined zone, while the exterior fence gives way to walkers, who are killed by Rick and Carl using automatic rifles. Maggie manages to enter the cell block by shooting the window, eliminates the remaining undead and rushes to her father's aid, while Hershel is tending to a dying Glenn. As Carl reassures his father, Daryl's group returns, and Bob administers medicine to the remaining infected survivors, including Glenn and Sasha. Hershel returns to his cell block and breaks down in tears. When Daryl approaches him about Carol, he only tells him that he should speak to Rick. The four join a large group of survivors led by Martinez. After reassuring Meghan of her safety, the Governor joins Martinez and his right-hand men, brothers Mitch and Pete, on a supply run to a survivalist cabin, finding decapitated bodies along the way. After leaving the cabin, Martinez tells that he rescued the Governor because he was with Meghan, indicating that he has changed from his cruel ways. The next day, he invites the Governor to play golf on top of a camper, where he tells the Governor that Shumpert was killed in the preceding months, and says there are some things that they could not return from. When he proposes a shared leadership between them, an enraged Governor beats him up and throws him into a pit of walkers to be eaten. Mitch holds a meeting where they disclose Martinez's death, and Pete declares temporary leadership. The Governor goes on another supply run with Mitch and Pete, and discover a camp of survivors. The brothers debate on whether they should take the people in or rob them, but the survivors are eliminated and looted a few moments later. After failing to escape the group with the Chalmer family, the Governor kills Pete and forms an alliance with Mitch, who wanted to loot the aforementioned camp, and he becomes the leader of the survivors. • Summary: The Governor rallies his group for an assault on the prison, claiming they can take it without killing anybody. He reveals that he's captured Michonne and Hershel and that he'll use them as leverage. Hershel attempts to barter with the Governor, saying their groups can live together in the prison peacefully, but the Governor isn't interested. Back at the prison, Daryl and Rick clash over Rick's banishment of Carol. Tyreese believes that there's still a murderer in the prison, but before Rick can tell him about Carol, they hear an explosion outside, causing the group to check it out, only to find out that the Governor's group is outside the prison fences and revealed that they have taken Hershel and Michonne as hostages. The Governor demands that Rick's group leave, but they refuse, instead offering to let the Governor's group live in one of the prison's cell blocks. The Governor appears to consider this, but instead takes Michonne's sword and partially decapitates Hershel, provoking a firefight between the two groups as the Governor orders his group to "kill them all". Hershel attempts to run away but Governor finishes him off by decapitating him completely while Michonne is able to slip away amidst in the gunfire. Meanwhile, Lilly looks onward at the river where a walker is swept by the waves while Meghan plays at a mud pile, but a walker suddenly arises from the mud and bites Meghan in the arm. As the battle continues, Mitch drives over the prison fence in his tank, effectively rendering the prison useless as a stronghold from walkers. Lilly brings Meghan's body to the battle site, further infuriating the Governor, who shoots her in the head to prevent her from turning. Rick ambushes the Governor but the Governor gains the upper hand. Meanwhile, the prison group begins to split up as some members, including the sick escape in the prison bus and others retreat on their own. Tyreese is pinned by two members of the Governor's group but is saved by Lizzie. Daryl is able to place a grenade inside the main gun of the tank, forcing Mitch to evacuate, and subsequently kills him with his crossbow. The Governor is about to kill Rick, but Michonne stabs him through his back with her katana. Rick then returns to the prison, looking for Carl, whom he finds. They then search for Judith, only to find a bloody, empty baby carrier. Devastated, Rick and Carl retreat from the prison on their own. • Summary: Michonne returns to the prison grounds, fashioning two new walker "pets" to accompany her for camouflage, and solemnly impales Hershel's zombified head before leaving without entering the prison. Meanwhile, a severely weakened Rick and a bitter Carl travel on their own and encounter a diner, where they scavenge supplies and kill a walker. The two then discover and reside in a house, where Carl acts rebelliously and angrily towards his father. Michonne spots Rick and Carl's footprints on the road, but initially turns away from their trail. She later has a nightmare about her life before the apocalypse, in which she lived with her young son, her lover Mike, and another close associated named Terry; the latter two eventually became her first walker "pets" after their deaths. After waking up in the house, Carl attempts to awaken his father, but to no avail. When two walkers bang at the front door in response to Carl's yelling, Carl lures them away, and after a scuffle with a third walker during which the first two pile on, he kills the three undead. Upon returning to his unconscious father, he chastises Rick for his inability to protect the people he loves and says he would be fine if Rick died. Carl then travels to another house to scavenge more supplies, but he narrowly escapes a walker and must subdue him after running out of ammunition. That night, Rick groans and reaches out to Carl, who fears his father has died and reanimated, but Carl cannot shoot him. Carl admits his weaknesses, only to realize that Rick is still alive. Rick acknowledges Carl's ability to survive and apologizes for the boy's having had to become a man, but Carl replies that Rick need not apologize. Michonne regains her will to live after seeing a walker that resembles herself, kills the small herd of walkers she was traveling with - eliminating her "pets" in the process, and returns to the trail to pursue Rick and Carl. She discovers Rick and Carl's location, and knocks on the door. Rick looks through peephole and smiles, telling Carl, "It's for you".

The dying father tells the group to follow the tracks, since it leads to a safer place. The five discover a sign that promises sanctuary, with a map marking "Terminus". • Summary: Tyreese, Carol, Lizzie, Mika and Judith continue in the railroad tracks on their way to Terminus. Carol tells Tyreese about Lizzie's sympathy for walkers and Mika's lack of toughness, like her deceased daughter Sophia. While Carol and Mika get supplies, Tyreese and Lizzie encounter a walker who gets trapped within the tracks; Lizzie pleads with Tyreese not to kill it, as it is not a threat to them. Carol tells Mika that she has to eventually learn how to fight instead of run, while Mika tells her that she can kill walkers, who she views as a threat, unlike her sister. The two then stumble upon a house in a grove, where the group decides to take shelter. The next day, Lizzie plays tag with a walker, which is killed by Carol; this upsets Lizzie. Carol and Mika hunt for animals after witnessing a forest fire in the distance, however Mika is unable to kill a deer. Mika later finds Lizzie feeding the trapped walker in the railroad tracks and contemplating about getting bitten to join them, but the sisters later flee after a herd of charred walkers chase after them. While Carol begins to warm up to the idea of staying at the grove, Tyreese admits that he has nightmares about Karen and he is not ready to be around other people. When the two return to the house, they discover that Lizzie has killed Mika and is about to kill Judith; she wants her sister to return as a walker. After Tyreese, Lizzie and Judith enter the house, Carol secretly and tearfully prevents Mika's reanimation. Tyreese and Carol debate on what should be done to Lizzie, in which Tyreese tells Carol that Lizzie admitted that she had been feeding the walkers at the prison, leading him to believe that she killed Karen, but realizes Lizzie would not have the strength to move the bodies, and Carol points out Lizzie would have let Karen reanimate. Nevertheless, the two conclude that Lizzie cannot be around other people. The next day, Carol executes Lizzie. That evening she places her pistol on the table within Tyreese's reach and admits to Tyreese that she murdered Karen and David. Tyreese puts his hand on the gun but then forgives her. Rick, Carl and Michonne are ahead, with Carl and Michonne competing on who can walk on the rails the longest. Meanwhile, Daryl and Len, one of the marauders, are hunting when they each put an arrow into a rabbit. Len then "claims" the rabbit and argues with Daryl before the marauders' leader, Joe, interrupts them. Joe explains to Daryl that the group has one rule: if they want something, they claim it. He then cuts the rabbit in half for Daryl and Len, since the former was not aware of the rule. While walking on the tracks, Joe encourages Daryl to stay with them, although he informs him that whoever lies or steals from the group will take a severe beating. After the group spends the night in a railroad platform, Daryl awakens to Len accusing him of stealing his half of the rabbit. Daryl's bag contains the other half. While Daryl pleads that he was set up, Joe then reveals that he witnessed Len put the rabbit in Daryl's bag, and begins beating up Len with the group. Upon leaving camp with the group, Daryl sees Len's beaten body with an arrow in its head. Joe informs Daryl that they are tracking a man (Rick), who had killed one of their own and may be headed to Terminus. When Glenn's group approaches a tunnel, with a sign by Maggie to proceed, Abraham decides it is too big of a risk to Dr. Porter and leaves Glenn and Tara with supplies to proceed, and tells Glenn and Tara to return to the last road they passed if they have trouble getting through. • Summary: While trekking through the woods, the group addresses several moments of their pasts, but Daryl senses that someone is watching them. The group encounters a priest, Father Gabriel Stokes, who Rick immediately suspects is hiding something after he claims that he has never killed any walkers nor people. Fr. Gabriel leads the group to his church for shelter, despite Abraham believing that it would slow down their journey to Washington. Fr. Gabriel, who had survived through canned goods from a food drive, directs Rick to a food bank which has supplies, but is overrun with walkers. Rick decides to travel to the food bank anyway, with Michonne, Bob, Sasha and a reluctant Fr. Gabriel joining him. Before leaving, Rick expresses his distrust for Fr. Gabriel to Carl, and reminds him to keep his guard up. At the food bank, Rick's group dispatches several walkers in a flooded area, however Bob is caught in a scuffle with a decayed walker before it is taken out by Sasha. Rick continually pressures Fr. Gabriel to reveal what he is hiding, to no success; Carl later discovers a writing on the church's exterior: "You'll burn for this." During a festive dinner that night, Abraham expresses the need to continue with the mission, with Rick finally agreeing to participate, and Tara confesses to Maggie that she was among the Governor's army, although Maggie reassures her position within the group. Rick thanks Fr. Gabriel for his hospitality, however he also threatens him if his secret causes harm the group. Carol, who feels uneasy with the new members of the group, decides to leave, but Daryl follows her to an abandoned car that they fixed earlier. A car speeds by them; the two follow it on their car after Daryl recognizes it as the one that took Beth. Bob, who went outside the church to weep, is captured by Gareth's small band of Terminus survivors, which includes a still-alive Martin. Four Walls and a Roof

  • Episode # - 54
  • Season Episode # - 3
  • Summary: Gareth continues to taunt Bob and threaten his group, but Bob begins laughing hysterically and reveals that he was bitten by the walker in the food drive, and they are eating "tainted meat". At the church, Sasha and Rick confront Fr. Gabriel over the disappearances of Bob, Daryl and Carol, and demand that he reveal his secret. Fr. Gabriel tearfully tells the group that he locked out many people, including his own congregation, from the church, and believes that Rick's group was sent to him as (deserved) punishment. The group then hears a whistle and discovers Bob outside the church, deposited there by Gareth's group. Bob reveals his bite and tells them all he knows about the Hunters. Abraham decides to leave with Eugene immediately on the church bus, but Rick demands that they stay to retaliate against the Hunters and wait for Daryl and Carol. Their disagreement becomes heated and nearly violent before Glenn diffuses the situation by agreeing to assist his group (alongside Maggie and Tara) if Abraham stays for twelve hours to help them. After Rick, Abraham, Sasha, Maggie, Glenn, Tara and Michonne leave towards Gareth's hideout, the Hunters break into the church to kill the remaining members. However, Rick's group ambushes them, kills two of Gareth's men and shoots off two of Gareth's fingers. Despite Gareth explaining their group's motives to Rick, Rick, Sasha, Abraham and Michonne slaughter him, Martin and the rest of the Hunters. The following morning, the group bids their goodbyes to Bob before he dies and is stabbed in the head by Tyreese. After burying Bob, the group part ways with Abraham's small band, with Abraham leaving a map to Rick that includes an apology. That night, Michonne encounters Daryl returning to the church. Slabtown

  • Season Episode # - 4
  • Summary: Beth wakes up in Grady Memorial Hospital in the middle of Atlanta. Officer Dawn Lerner, who is in charge of the hospital, assigns her as a nurse under Dr. Steven Edwards, the hospital's remaining doctor. Dawn enforces a policy in which the people her fellow officers rescue must work under them before they are rescued by the military, while disposing injured people that threaten the scarcity of their medical resources. A heavily injured man, Gavin Trevitt, is brought in, with Dawn unusually insisting that Edwards save him at all costs; she retaliates by hitting Beth when Stevens deems Trevitt a lost cause. Beth encounters another worker, Joan, who had been bitten and recaptured after a failed escape, and is forced to help Dawn and Edwards amputate Joan's arm. Later, she meets Noah, a laundry worker, who explains to her that only weak people are saved by the officers and tells her that he wishes to escape to his walled community in Virginia. An officer and her rescuer, Gorman, begins making advances towards her, only to be stopped by Edwards. When Beth questions Edwards on why he still stays in the hospital despite their bad conditions, he replies that it is still better inside than the overrun Atlanta. He tells her to give Trevitt a dose of Clozapine, however this results in the latter to have seizures and to flatline. Dawn confronts her about Trevitt's death, but Noah takes the blame and is badly beaten by the officers. Beth becomes confused when Edwards questions her about giving the correct drug, Clonazepam. Dawn confronts Beth after seeing through Noah's lie and tells her that she is not proving her worth. Beth and Noah formulate a plan to escape the hospital though the elevator shaft. While hunting for the key of the elevator shaft in Dawn's office, Beth encounters the body of Joan, who has killed herself by opening up her amputation wound, and Gorman, who tries to blackmail her into sexual acts. She complies in order to buy time for Joan's reanimation, and smashes his head with a jar before he is eaten by the zombified Joan. She and Noah then proceed to exit through the shaft and fight their way through walkers; although she is tackled by an officer, she smiles after seeing that Noah has made it out. Beth berates Dawn for letting things happen for nothing; Dawn retaliates by knocking her out. Beth later confronts Edwards about deliberately using her to kill Trevitt, another doctor, who would have threatened his position in the hospital. As she prepares to kill Edwards in the hallway, she sees an unconscious Carol brought in a stretcher.

  • Summary: In several flashbacks, Abraham kills several men who have assaulted his family. Frightened, his family leaves while he's asleep, and Abraham soon discovers they've been eaten by walkers. He prepares to kill himself when he encounters Eugene who is being attacked. After being saved, Eugene tells Abraham that he's on a very important mission, an obvious lie used to enlist Abraham's continued protection. In the present, a damaged engine in the church bus disrupts Abraham's view, leading the bus to flip over when it collides with a car. The group escapes just before the bus bursts into flames, and they find shelter in a nearby library. That night, Eugene watches Abraham and Rosita have sex. He's discovered by Tara, to whom Eugene confesses that he sabotaged the bus. When asked why he did it, he reveals his fear of being outcast from the group even if he were able to save the world. Tara reassures him that he is a friend, and that the group would never do that regardless of the outcome. She offers to keep his involvement in the bus crash secret. The next morning, the group locates a fire truck and is able to get it running. As they move the truck, a large group of walkers are released from the building it was parked against and begin attacking. Just as the group is about to be overwhelmed, Eugene uses the fire hose on the truck to mow down the walkers. As the group travels to the outskirts of town, they are forced to stop after spotting herds of walkers ahead on their route. Abraham pressures the group to move forward, while Glenn begs him to find another route. Refusing to comply, Abraham drags Eugene towards the truck, but when the rest of the group attempts to stop him, Eugene confesses that he's not a scientist and that he sabotaged the bus. With the rest of the group standing in shock, Eugene explains that he used his intelligence and his ability to lie to convince Abraham to lead him to Washington, which he believes is the best possible place of survival. An enraged Abraham punches and knocks out Eugene, who is badly hurt after slamming into the road. Stopped by Rosita, Abraham walks away and collapses to his knees shortly after in shock and disbelief.

  • Summary: Daryl and Carol follow a car marked with crosses to Atlanta. Their car runs out of gas, however, and the pair are forced to spend the night in a nearby women's shelter – one that Carol had stayed at before. The next morning, they travel downtown and ascend a tall office building to get a better view of the city. Daryl spots a van with similar white crosses hanging over a bridge. On the way to check it out, they are ambushed by Noah, who steals their weapons and runs off leaving them to fend for themselves as several walkers attack. Carol attempts to shoot Noah with a pistol she was still armed with, but Daryl knocks her just as she shoots causing her to miss. The pair decide to continue on to the van. Inside, a label on a gurney leads them to believe the group they're following is based out of Grady Memorial Hospital. Walkers surround the van, trapping Daryl and Carol inside. They brace themselves as they intentionally rock the van off the ledge, survive the fall, and begin traveling towards the hospital. They enter a courthouse across the street to plan their next move. Gunfire erupts, and they discover it's from Noah, who was being attacked by walkers inside the building. Daryl reclaims their weapons, pinning Noah down under a bookshelf with the intention of leaving him behind. Carol insists on rescuing Noah, and Daryl reluctantly gives in. Noah reveals that he knows Beth, and that she helped him escape from the hospital. They decide to work together to free Beth, but Noah warns that the police will be coming soon to investigate the gunfire. As they evacuate the building, the police hit Carol with their car. Undetected, Noah restrains Daryl to keep them hidden, while Carol is placed on a gurney and loaded into the car. Noah assures him that they have medicine and a doctor who will treat her. The remaining officers agree to lie to Dawn about Lamson's death in order for the deal to push through. Fr. Gabriel explores the old camp of the Hunters, where he is horrified by Bob's roasted leg on the barbecue pit. When officer O'Donnell listens in their conversation and blackmails Dawn, Beth and Dawn work together to kill him. In another conversation, Beth accuses Dawn of covering up her actions to defend herself and claims that she will escape just like Noah, although Dawn disagrees and tells her that Noah will return. Rick's group initiates the trade, and both groups meet at the hospital. The officers are traded for Carol and Beth, although Dawn changes the terms by demanding Noah to return as her ward. Noah volunteers to stay. Beth goes to hug him, but then confronts Dawn and stabs her with scissors she hid. Dawn instinctively shoots Beth dead, and an enraged Daryl kills a remorseful Dawn. • Summary: Everyone is still reeling from the tragedy at Grady Memorial Hospital. Rick, Tyreese, Glenn, and Michonne decide to take Noah back to his hometown near Richmond, Virginia, in honor of Beth who was planning to help him get there. Upon arrival, however, they discover that the walled community has been overrun by walkers with no signs of survivors. Noah breaks down, then sprints to his family’s home with Tyreese in pursuit, only to find the remains of Noah's family. While Tyreese is surveying a bedroom, he's bitten in the arm by one of Noah's twin brothers, now a walker. Noah dispatches his brother and runs off to get the others who are scavenging the neighborhood for supplies. Tyreese suffers severe blood loss and begins to hallucinate, having imagined conversations with Martin, Bob, The Governor, Lizzie, Mika, and Beth. His strength and character are challenged by Martin and The Governor, while the others try to reassure him that everything's going to be alright. Elsewhere, Michonne continues to express her desire to settle in one place and wants to fortify the town, but Rick argues that the town is indefensible. Michonne then recommends going to Washington, D.C., as their best chance for survival, arguing that Eugene may have lied about the cure, but the belief that D.C. holds the best odds are true. Rick nods in agreement as they are alerted by Noah screaming for help. Michonne amputates Tyreese's bitten arm, and they escape from an attacking horde of walkers. • Summary: On their journey to Washington, the group's van breaks down, forcing them to travel on foot. The group is exhausted and on the verge of dehydration due to dwindling supplies, and they begin to question their chances of survival. They continue to be disheartened from the untimely deaths of Beth and Tyreese. After travelling for miles with a herd of walkers dangerously close behind, Rick orchestrates a plan to eliminate them by luring them off the end of a bridge, but Sasha dispatches them with her knife, forcing the group to abandon the plan and take on the walkers head-on; Michonne continues to chastise Sasha for her recklessness, and warns her that she might end up like her brother. Maggie is disturbed when she discovers in the trunk of a car a bound and gagged walker, which is killed by Glenn afterwards. While the group is resting, a pack of feral dogs arrive, which are swiftly eliminated by Sasha and eaten by the group. Despite comfort from Carol, a grieving and emotionally numb Daryl begins to self-inflict pain. Daryl rejoins the survivors, who are suspicious of several water bottles in the middle of the road, with a note indicating that they came from "a friend." Rain begins to pour, and the group rejoices by catching the water with their mouths before realizing that the rainfall has aggravated into a thunderstorm. They retrieve the water bottles before hiding in a barn Daryl found. While the survivors are huddled in a fire formed in the barn, Rick tells the group that they have to live with reality, to "do what [they] have to do", and to tell themselves that they "are the walking dead." Daryl looks outside the entrance to see that a herd of walkers have converged; the group works together to fend them off. The next morning, the storm has decimated the walkers, and Maggie and Sasha decide to travel outside and watch the sunrise. The two are approached by a man named Aaron, who identifies himself as the "friend" and wishes to talk to Rick.

  • Summary: Aaron tells the group that he is from the Alexandria Safe-Zone and shows them pictures, trying to convince them to join him. Rick, however, is untrusting of Aaron and punches him, knocking him unconscious. When Aaron regains consciousness, he has been tied up and Rick and the others have searched through his bag, finding a flare gun. Aaron reveals that the gun is to be used if he is in danger to signal his partner, who is outside nearby and also has a flare gun of his own. He also reveals that they have two vehicles nearby that are large enough to transport them all back to the safe-zone. Michonne convinces Rick that they should see if Aaron is telling the truth about the vehicles, and when they find that he has, she pressures him to go to the safe-zone. Rick confides in her that he's scared of losing his family and that he doesn't know if he can go through with the safe-zone, reasoning that Woodbury and Terminus appeared to be safe havens but with sinister intentions. Michonne convinces him to give it a chance and he agrees, but only if they take an alternate route. Aaron advises against it, as they have not cleared the area of straggling walkers. They leave at night and hit a herd of walkers in the middle of the road. After escaping the walkers, Rick, Glenn, Aaron, and Michonne meet up with the rest of the group, from which they were separated. Aaron is reunited with his partner, Eric, who was rescued by the other group after shooting his flare gun. The next morning, the group arrives at the Alexandria Safe Zone.

  • Summary: Sasha travels outside the gates of Alexandria, taking with her to use as target practice framed family portraits she's found in Alexandria. Feeling desolate, she wanders further into the woods, mumbling to herself for the walkers to "come and get" her. Meanwhile, Rick, Carol, and Daryl meet privately in the woods to discuss retrieving weapons from the armory in Alexandria, should they need them at short notice. They kill a walker and discover a mysterious "W" carved into its forehead. While out hunting, Daryl encounters Aaron, who is also out hunting. The duo try to catch a wild horse but are attacked by walkers, and the horse is killed. Sasha returns to Alexandria unscathed and requests to be a lookout in the bell tower, but her request is rejected by Deanna, who feels there is no need for a lookout for the time being. That evening, Deanna holds a welcoming party for Rick's group at her house, where Rick is introduced to Deanna's husband Reg and Jessie's husband Pete. Jessie's young son stamps Rick's hand with the letter "A". Daryl is unwilling to attend the party and is invited into Aaron's house, where he, Aaron, and Eric eat a meal together. Aaron shows Daryl a workshop filled with motorcycle parts, says he's welcome to rebuild a bike, and persuades him to become a "recruiter" for Alexandria. With everyone else is still at the party, Carol sneaks into the armory and loads up with weapons, but is confronted by Jessie's son, Sam. Carol threatens to have him killed if he tells anyone what he saw. At the party, Sasha lashes out at a guest over her superficial concerns and storms out. The next day, Deanna finally allows Sasha to be a lookout in the bell tower, while Rick, Carol, and Daryl meet again in the woods. Daryl declines a weapon from Carol, believing the residents of Alexandria are harmless, while Rick takes a handgun. Upon their reentry into Alexandria, Rick passes Jessie and her husband in the street and then appears to be affected in some profound way.

Meanwhile, the rest of the group try to deal with their own building issues. They discover a "W" carved into her forehead. Carl continues to follow Enid, and the two begin to bond over their shared experiences as survivors from outside the walls. Glenn confronts Nicholas and warns him never to step foot outside the walls again, prompting Nicholas to retrieve a hidden gun, which turns out to be the same one Rick had previously stashed away and lost. Carol talks with Sam and manages to obtain more evidence of Pete's abuse, which she relays to Rick. Angered, Rick approaches Deanna, who reveals she knows about Pete's abusive behavior, but turns a blind eye since he is the town surgeon and his skills are valuable. The Wolves earlier encountered by Morgan capture the man in the red poncho and kill him, before resetting the trap and finding Aaron's backpack, which contain photos of Alexandria. Still traumatized, Sasha seeks help from Fr. Gabriel, who rejects her offer and taunts her. Rick notices the unlocked gate, which he closes, and races around the town following blood splatters, eliminating walkers that have strayed inside. Gabriel's betrayal, Maggie visits his church, where she comes upon Sasha holding him at gunpoint after a brief scuffle. Maggie convinces the two to stop, and they pray together. • Summary: Flashbacks reveal the aftermath of the deaths of Pete and Reg and the arrival of Morgan. Tara recovers from her coma, while Father Gabriel is no longer trusted by the group for his betrayal. Glenn lies about how Nicholas led him outside of Alexandria to kill him. Rick puts more people on watch after learning of the Wolves, while he takes precautionary measures with Morgan. After burying Reg, Deanna and Rick decide to bury Pete outside Alexandria; accompanied by Morgan, Rick discovers a large quarry filled with walkers. After the two deduce that the quarry had been keeping Alexandria safe from the undead, Rick rescues Pete's son Ron, who had been following them and is holding a grudge against Rick, from a walker attack, and scolds him for going out by himself. In a town meeting, Rick proposes that they formulate a plan to herd the walkers away before they break free and attack the town. Although it is opposed by Carter, a skeptic Alexandrian, the plan is approved by Deanna. During construction of a wall needed to divert the walkers, several undead attack Carter's group, who is left by Rick to fend for themselves in order to learn how to fight; when they are paralyzed in fear, Rick's group rescues them. This motivates Carter to tell other Alexandrians his desire to overthrow Rick. When Eugene is caught overhearing, Carter almost shoots him before Rick arrives and in turn threatens him; he decides to spare him. Rick invites Morgan to stay in his house. After the course is completed, Rick rallies the volunteers to the quarry for a dry run, but a truck blocking the exit of the quarry topples, which frees the herd, and forces Rick's group to enact the plan earlier than expected. At a shop between Alexandria and the quarry, Glenn, Heath, and Nicholas decide to kill a small group of walkers trapped in the shop since they deem that the noise would be a distraction to the approaching herd of walkers. Glenn refuses to let Nicholas help, but Nicholas saves Heath from being bitten by a walker. • Summary: Flashbacks show Morgan's life before his quest to find Rick. After burning down his apartment in a fit of insanity, Morgan sets up camp in the middle of the woods, killing several walkers and a father-son duo he encountered. While hunting, he stumbles upon a secluded cabin whose sole inhabitant, Eastman, manages to knock him out and trap him in a cell. A former forensic psychologist, Eastman lives a peaceful life, taking care of a goat named Tabitha, practicing aikido, and learning to make cheese. Eastman believes that all life is precious, and humans are not meant to kill. He later reveals that Morgan's cell had been unlocked the entire time. Once out of the cell, Morgan attacks Eastman, but he repels his attack. Eastman gives Morgan an ultimatum to stay or leave, but makes it clear he won't allow Morgan to kill him. In response, Morgan returns to his cell and shuts the door. The next day, Morgan leaves the cell to save Tabitha from a walker attack and encounters a graveyard where Eastman buries walkers. The two bond as Eastman teaches aikido to Morgan, who begins to develop a sense of peace. When they decide to scavenge Morgan's old camp, Morgan begins to feel trauma again, so Eastman orders him to practice aikido on the spot. They encounter a walker - a man that Morgan previously killed - and a guilt-ridden Morgan freezes on the spot, forcing Eastman to kill the walker. Eastman gets bitten in the process. Morgan angrily admonishes Eastman for forcing him to practice aikido at that time and place, and for putting himself in danger. Morgan begins to revert back to his PTSD behaviours, but saves a couple he encounters in the woods from walkers. He then decides to return to Eastman's cabin, where he finds Tabitha devoured by walkers. Eastman finally explains why he has a cell in his cabin, confiding in Morgan that he imprisoned and starved a psychopath who killed his entire family. He concluded that this didn't give him peace and he decided not to kill anymore. Weakened by his bite, Eastman offers his cabin to Morgan, but advises against him being alone. After burying Eastman, Morgan leaves the cabin and discovers a sign that leads to Terminus. In the present, Morgan relays this story to the Wolves' leader, whom he had previously captured, hoping his story can help the Wolf change his ways. The Wolf reveals that he is injured and could die, but suggests that he will kill Morgan and the Alexandrians if he survives his injuries, as part of his "code". Morgan leaves the Wolf in the house, locking the door as he leaves.

  • Summary: As the Alexandrians clean up the damage caused by the Wolves, Rick arrives barely ahead of the walker horde. With walkers at the gates, Rick tries to rally the Alexandrians to stay strong, reminding them that with only half the horde present, they cannot break through the walls. Aaron then admits to everybody that he inadvertently led the Wolves to Alexandria. With the walkers at the walls, morale among the Alexandrians begins to drop. Aaron decides to help Maggie search for Glenn and shows her an old sewer tunnel they can use to bypass the walkers. However, when they see the exit is blocked by walkers, Maggie gives up in despair. She reveals to Aaron that she is pregnant. Deanna and Spencer then get into an argument, with Spencer blaming Deanna's idealism for getting Aidan and Reg killed. Carl approaches Ron for help in finding Enid, but Ron refuses, and threatens to inform Rick if Carl leaves Alexandria. Tara checks in on Denise, who is quickly losing her confidence in her abilities as a doctor. Tara simply advises Denise that "being afraid sucks", and Denise manages to find a way to save Scott from his infected bullet wound. Elated, she goes back to Tara and kisses her. Jessie goes to check in on a neighbor, only to discover that she had committed suicide and turned into a walker. Jessie kills the walker and tells her fellow Alexandrians that they have to adapt to their new circumstances and fight to survive. Ron approaches Rick and tells him about Carl's plans to search for Enid, and asks Rick to teach him how to shoot. That night, Deanna is walking on the street and is attacked by a walker. In a rage, she attacks it with a broken bottle just as Rick arrives. Deanna tells Rick that she wants Alexandria to survive, and asks him if she was foolish for being an idealist, to which Rick replies that she was not. Despite losing faith, Maggie refuses to believe Glenn is dead, and Aaron suggests naming her baby after him. Rick visits Jessie, and after a short talk, they begin to kiss. At the gate, Deanna stares at the walkers outside defiantly before walking away, failing to notice blood dripping from a crack in the wall.
