Should the Show be Based on the Comic?

I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who realizes that for everything the show has done right, there are several things that it's done wrong. This is just my opinion of course, but when I say they've done something wrong, I'm not complaining about their lack of loyalty to the source material, in fact, many of their original ideas are what make the show worth watching. When I say they've done something wrong, I mean that they've made changes that either don't make sense, or are completely unnecessary. I could bring up several examples, but I can't really bring up anything that hasn't been brought up before. So instead, I'm going to address what I believe to be at the core of the issue. Based on the success of the Telltale game, I believe the show should have been an original story set within the TWD universe, but with a new cast of characters in a new setting. TWD was always going to be difficult to adapt into a show, but it's even more difficult if the show feels obligated to remain faithful to the  series while maintaining it's own original story, and it's attempts to do both at the same time inevitably lead to mixed results. I bring this up because of the rumors of a spin-off set in the same universe as the current show, and I'm wondering if anyone else thinks that that's what they should have done in the first place. It's just my opinion, but I'm wondering if anyone else feels the same way, or if they can explain why they disagree.
