The way I see it, the Walking Dead novels are Kirkman's way of covering the Woodbury characters while keeping to his word that everything from the prison arc is dead to him. While I'm curious to know about how The Governor became who he was, I'm actually more interested in finding out more about how the ASZ was formed. So once The Road to Woodbury is done I'm hoping Kirkman will go over the whole Douglas vs. Davidson conflict. And maybe after that he could go over the Hilltop vs. Saviors conflict. Questions? Comments? Concerns? Contributions?
