Nothing is known about Sturgess' life before or during the outbreak. It is likely that he lived in or near Alexandria before the apocalypse.
Sturgess is one of the many Alexandrians to help construct the wall out on the road that is designed to deter the horde of zombies along a route away from Alexandria. On his first day outside the walls, Sturgess is almost bitten when a group of walkers ambush him, Carter and a few other residents. He is also present at the quarry going over Rick's plan when suddenly the zombies break free, forcing Sturgess and the others to scramble to their positions. With the horde on the move, he goes with Scott, Annie, Glenn, Nicholas, and Heath to keep zombies from straggling off the road.
At the beginning of the episode, as walkers attack the group, Sturgess tries to fight them off and accidentally shoots Scott in the leg, while a walker grabs him. After being saved, Sturgess panics and runs away from the scene, abandoning the group.
Later on, the group finds Sturgess' hat lost on the streets of a nearby town, followed by his lifeless corpse, being eaten by walkers.
His name can be seen written on the wall of the fallen.
Shortly after having abandoned the group, he is found in a nearby town being devoured by several walkers.
- His signature hat, that was used during shooting, was given as a gift to a fan on the Talking Dead.
