Standing on the beach at Victor Strand's house, Madison watches bombs drop in the distance. Strand steers a Zodiac inflatable boat towards his yacht, the Abigail, with Nick, Alicia, Ofelia, and Daniel on board. Back on shore, Madison and Travis prepare supplies for transport to the Abigail. Chris sits by his mother Liza's corpse, catatonic.
Strand powers up the Abigail and sees refugee boats fleeing the coastline as Los Angeles erupts in flames and flashes of light illuminate the sky. He dispatches Nick to pick up the rest of the group before the Abigail is beset by refugees. Madison, Travis, and Chris fight the infected on the beach. Nick arrives in the Zodiac and they all flee the shore with Liza's body.
With everyone on board, Strand powers the Abigail forward. The group watches as the military firebombs Los Angeles and the raging inferno engulfs the land.
The next day, Strand informs the group that his yacht has enough fuel to last 3,000 miles — more, if they don't overtax the engines.
Travis checks in on Chris in his cabin, but he is still mostly unresponsive.
On deck, the group spots a small skiff overflowing with at least 20 passengers. The passengers beg for help, and Madison pleads with Strand to rescue the skiff passengers, but he refuses. Travis asks Alicia to scan the radio channels to help figure out a safe destination. Strand tells Travis and Madison that he has set a course for San Diego in the hopes of receiving help from the Navy or border patrol. Madison appeals to Travis to convince Strand to save the skiff, but Travis agrees that they cannot take on additional passengers.
Alicia listens to distress calls from survivors on the radio. The Coast Guard announces that they cannot rescue anyone by sea, land, or air.
In the wheelhouse, Strand admits to Nick that he doesn't have a back-up plan if San Diego is a bust.
Madison urges Alicia to stop listening to the radio and get some rest. Alicia refuses.
A concerned Travis tells Madison that Chris has been sitting next to Liza's body all day. Sensing Madison's anger about the skiff, he maintains that they need to take care of themselves before they help other people.
Alicia hears music on a radio channel and lingers. A man encourages listeners to respond. "I'm here," she says.
Chris kisses Liza on the head. He joins Daniel, who is fishing off the deck. Daniel, still struggling with the loss of his wife, sympathizes with Chris about Liza. Travis watches them talk.
Nick runs into Ofelia and suggests she apply ice to her gunshot wound — and also drink lots of vodka.
Alicia talks to the man on the radio. He tells her his name is Jack and that he is on a small boat, but hesitates to reveal his location.
Travis approaches Daniel to ask him how Chris is doing. "One day Chris will understand what you did for his mother was an act of mercy," Daniel assures Travis.
Madison hears Strand talking in the wheelhouse and is surprised to find him alone. He explains that he talks to himself to stay awake.
Alicia tells Jack that they have a desalinization system. Jack jokes that she must be rich, but she says that the yacht isn't hers. She hesitates to reveal more specific information.
Madison joins Daniel on deck. Daniel questions Strand's motives, pointing out that Strand was already packing his bags before the bombs started falling.
Jack tells Alicia that he is with his brother and his brother's wife. Alicia listens sympathetically as Jack talks about watching his girlfriend turn.
On deck, the group gathers around Liza's body as Travis delivers a eulogy. Chris violently pushes Liza's body into the sea and storms off.
Below deck, Chris blows up at Travis. "You shot her!", he screams, punching Travis in the face. Travis rejoins the group in the dining room, nursing a bloody lip.
Alicia tries to reach Jack on the radio and learns that his boat is sinking. She offers to rescue him and discloses her location so that they can determine how far away he is.
Alicia tells Travis and Madison that a man named Jack needs their help. Strand angrily asks what she revealed to Jack about their situation. She insists that she didn't tell him anything important. Nick tells Strand that Alicia was just trying to help people, but Strand maintains that everyone who comes on his boat must contribute in some way, or at the very least, not be a hindrance. When Nick wonders what his own contribution is, Strand says Nick's contribution is his fearlessness.
Madison comforts Chris and defends Travis, saying she would have killed Liza if Travis hadn't. "I'll never let that happen to someone I love," she says. As the group sits down for dinner, Chris goes out on deck and sees a fog rolling in. He jumps into the water, sending everyone into a panic. Nick dives in after him, but Chris explains he is just going for a swim.
Alicia tells Jack that they can't rescue him. "It's okay, Alicia, I got you. I'll see you soon," he says ominously. Meanwhile, Strand sees an incoming boat on the radar.
In the water, Nick gets attacked by an infected and narrowly escapes. As the fog dissipates, the group sees dead bodies floating all around — bodies of the skiff refugees. The skiff floats nearby, riddled with bullets. Travis picks up Chris in the Zodiac. Nick swims to the overturned skiff and finds the boat's log book.
Strand hears another radar alert. "It could be no one, it could be the ones who did that," he tells Alicia and Madison, indicating the shot-up skiff. Strand tells Madison that they need a head start if they are going to outrun the approaching boat, revealing that it is incoming at 25 knots — faster than the Abigail can manage.
Travis, Chris, and Nick return to the Abigail. As Strand powers up the boat, Madison tells Travis that whoever shot up the skiff is coming back for them.
Madison yells at Nick for endangering himself by jumping in the water after the wreckage of the sailboat. Travis shows up with the log book that Nick retrieved from the sailboat and says that they have a problem.
Travis informs Strand that, according to the log, the military has already burned San Diego to the ground. Strand proposes they hide from the fast-approaching ship by retreating to the coastline. Travis suggests Catrina Island, which has a ranger station that may offer supplies and a short-wave radio.
Travis assures Chris that they are going to a safe location. Chris asks how Travis knows it is safe. Travis has no answer.
As the Abigail approaches Catrina Island, Madison sees a light flash inside a house.
Madison's group approaches the house that she saw from the boat. A young boy — the one from the beach — runs out to greet them. Travis introduces himself to the boy's father, George Geary, and asks permission to dock for the night.
Inside the house, George tells Travis that based on his communication with other ranger stations, he believes the entire country west of the Continental Divide has fallen and the border to Mexico has been completely sealed off.
Back at the Abigail, Daniel checks in with Ofelia. Ofelia says she is starting to understand the world better, which helps her understand him. "It's cruel," she says.
At the Geary house, Nick and Alicia play with the kids, Harry and Willa.
Harry brings Nick to his room and shows him action figures with red dots on their foreheads, representing gunshot wounds. Harry says that he won't get sick because his family has "power pills." "It's like a vitamin," he explains, "if I take it my family stays together."
In the wheelhouse, Daniel accuses Strand of wanting to offload members of the group to conserve his resources. Strand deflects Daniel's accusations.
George tells Travis that the apocalypse is all part of nature's plan. "The world couldn't sustain itself so it stood back and said enough. This is its course correction," he explains. He says he raised his family on the island and intends for them to stay on the island.
As they head back to the boat, Madison tells Travis that Melissa may have flashed the light on purpose. She speculates that Melissa wants to leave the island but is too scared of George to say so.
On the Abigail, Nick gazes at the stars. He muses to Alicia that being able to see the stars – without light pollution or smog to block them out – is an upside to the apocalypse. Changing topics, Nick tells her that he is concerned about Harry and Willa's future, or lack thereof.
The next day, Chris sees Seth walking toward the beach with a pickaxe. Seth brings Chris to the beach, where infected are pounding on the chain-link fence. Seth slams the pickaxe into an infected's head and invites Chris to take a swing.
Travis looks for Chris.
Chris kills an infected with the pickaxe. Seth praises his technique and explains that George taught him how to kill and survive. Travis finds them and tells Chris to return to the boat. He averts his eyes as Chris kills one more infected.
Travis finds George at the house and recalls the days when Chris was mowing lawns and taking out garbage, rather than killing infected. "This is how we manage now," George says.
George enlists Travis' help mending a fence. He tells Travis about a massive herd of infected on a nearby marina and predicts that it is only a matter of time before the herd finds them. Travis asks why George isn't fleeing. "We all die. It's a question of surrender or survival, acceptance or denial," George says.
Alicia visits the ranger station and draws her former boyfriend Matt's tattoo on a bulletin board.
Nick looks for drugs in the Geary house and finds a baggie of pills hidden in George's office.
Back on the Abigail, the unknown ship finally disappears from the radar. Strand announces that it is time to sail.
Madison tells Melissa that they are setting sail and asks if she had intentionally flashed the light to signal them. Melissa admits that she signaled them in the hopes that they would take Harry and Willa, since George and Seth are planning for the entire family to die together on the island.
Madison relays Melissa's request to Travis and insists they rescue Harry and Willa. "You're not taking them, Travis, you're saving them," she says. Travis reluctantly agrees to speak with George.
Daniel searches the wheelhouse while Strand is gone. He finds a map of Baja, Mexico, inside a locked compartment.
Strand, alone, talks to someone on his satellite phone. "It's all clear now," he says. "Sundown. I'll be there."
On the boat, Nick tells Madison and Travis that he found poison in George's office and predicts that George is planning on "Jonestown-ing" his family.
Travis, Madison, and Nick return to the Geary house to take Harry and Willa. Melissa is hurriedly explaining some of her children's quirks when George comes in. He angrily demands to know what is happening when the argument is interrupted by Harry. Something is wrong with Willa, he reports. Upstairs, Willa is found dead after ingesting the "power pills" from George's stash. Melissa cradles Willa, who opens her eyes, turns, and bites her. George agrees to let Travis take Harry but refuses to join them.
Travis' group sprints to the boat with Harry. Seth chases them down with his rifle and forces them to give Harry back. Melissa, who is now infected, walks toward them on the dock. Seth shoots Melissa while Harry's back is turned.
In the middle of the ocean, Alex swims to her wounded companion, Jake, after surviving the crash of Flight 462. She brings Jake to a raft with other survivors. Tom, one of the survivors, smacks an infected passenger with an oar and pushes him overboard.
Days pass, and Tom tells Alex that Jake is dying and urges her to kill him before he turns. That night, Alex stabs Tom when he tries to kill Jake in his sleep. Michael, the remaining survivor, encourages Alex to put Jake out of his misery.
On the Abigail, Strand tries to call his contact via satellite phone to confirm that he is coming. The phone cuts out. Madison and Travis start to make love in their state room. The boat creaks to a stop.
Travis determines that the engine malfunctioned due to a blocked water intake. He says the problem will require him to look under the boat. Madison urges him to wait until sunrise, but Strand and Travis agree that they cannot waste time.
Travis scuba dives into the water and swims to the water intake. He sees an infected Michael flailing beside the hull, his arm stuck in the intake valve. Michael attacks Travis who panics and struggles to escape.
Later in the engine room, Travis begins removing backed-up sludge from the filtration system and informs Strand that the repairs may take all day. Strand snaps that they cannot wait this long.
Daniel notices that Ofelia's wound is infected. She informs him that she ran out of antibiotics. He forbids her from asking Madison for antibiotics, insisting that families must take care of themselves. "Blood is blood."
Alicia shows Madison a spot on shore that is littered with luggage from the plane wreck. Alicia, Nick, and Chris insist on going to shore to gather supplies. Madison and Travis refuse to let them go but Daniel offers to accompany them. Alicia, Nick, and Chris board the Zodiac. Daniel tells Madison that Strand is planning to sail to Baja and asks her to question Strand about his intentions.
On shore, Daniel tells everyone to stay within view as they gather supplies.
Travis scuba dives underwater to work on the water intake.
Chris separates from the group and ventures inland.
Madison hears a noise and sees blood emerge from the spot in the water where Travis was swimming. Michael's body floats to the surface after Travis plunges a knife through his eye socket.
Nick finds a knife in a suitcase and pockets it. Elsewhere, Chris discovers part of a wrecked plane hull and enters the cabin. He taunts an infected and bludgeons it with a metal scrap. A man, still alive, wakes up in a nearby row and weakly begs for help.
Madison confronts Strand about his secret plans and demands to know what is in Baja. Strand reveals that he knows of a house with food, water, and concrete walls, but explains that he has precious little time to get there. She demands that he take the entire group with him. They cautiously make a pact to trust each other.
Daniel rummages through luggage in search of antibiotics for Ofelia. Nick informs Daniel that Ofelia needs Amoxicillin, Oxycodone, or something similar. Daniel realizes that Chris is missing and goes to find him.
Chris helps the plane survivor out of his seat. When the man is unable to move, Chris notices that part of his spine is exposed. Critically wounded, the passenger continues to beg for help, but he refuses water. Chris realises that the man wants to die, and knowing that the wound is fatal, Chris bashes the infected man in the head.
Daniel looks for Chris on the beach, before moving inland.
Alicia leaves Nick to look for Daniel and Chris. Nick finds a large stash of Amoxicillin.
Madison informs Travis of Strand's Baja plans and tells him the house is their best chance at survival. Travis balks at trusting Strand, but Madison argues that they have little choice.
Daniel runs into Alex in the beach, who is fleeing from over a sand dune. "They're coming," she pants. A large herd of infected appears in the distance.
Nick spots an infected trapped in a nearby pit. He watches curiously as crabs crawl over it. It manages to catch and eat one of them. Getting too close to the edge, Nick accidentally slips into the pit and is attacked. He stabs the infected using the knife he found earlier. Another infected falls into the pit.
Alicia finds Chris by the airplane hull. He is visibly shaken from his experience and is hesitant to divulge details. They hear a gunshot in the distance. Madison sees the herd through her binoculars and tells Strand they have to move. Daniel shoots at the herd, and is joined by Alex, Alicia, and Chris in the fight.
Back on the Abigail, Travis removes the last bit of sludge and a severed hand from the filtration system and fixes the engine. Strand powers the boat up.
The herd closes in on Daniel, Alex, Alicia, and Chris. They fight back, but are vastly outnumbered. As they are about to be overwhelmed, Nick arrives covered in blood and helps fight off the infected, allowing the group enough time to escape. As they flee, Nick realizes that the infected are not attacking him. He walks into the herd and comes face-to-face with one. The infected smells him, but is unmoved as Nick snarls back at it. Nick is brought out of his trance by Alicia's voice, and retreats.
The group reaches the Zodiac and pushes off into the water. Alex tells Daniel that they need to make one stop.
Strand looks through binoculars and sees the Zodiac approaching with a yellow raft in tow.
Back at the Abigail, Madison informs the group that Strand has invited them to join him at a compound in Baja with food, power, and water. Strand refuses to let Alex and Jake board the ship. Travis insists that they at least tow Alex's raft to San Diego. Alicia and Madison bring water and blankets to Alex and Jake. Nick gives Ofelia rosary beads that he found on the beach. Inside the boat, Strand paces up and down.
In the raft, Alex cradles Jake and assures him that things are currently as bad as they will ever be and that each day he will get better and better.
Strand dashes outside and cuts the raft loose. Madison objects, but it is too late. The raft drifts behind as the Abigail cruises south. Strand returns to the wheelhouse in silence.
Nick swims ashore in the middle of the night, having escaped the detection of a helicopter and a patrol boat. He arrives at a recently-abandoned refugee camp on the beach. After attracting the attention of an Infected, he lures it into one of the tents and kills it, smearing himself in blood from the Infected’s belly.
Back on the Abigail, Travis condemns Strand for cutting Alex’s raft loose while Chris and Ofelia stand watch on deck. A raft with two men and a bleeding pregnant woman approaches the Abigail. Chris wonders if he should kill them but hesitates. The passengers of the raft board the boat without being invited, claiming that the woman is having pregnancy complications.
Travis, Daniel and Madison rush upstairs and interrogate the strangers. Strand attempts to get his MP5, but finds the magazine removed by Daniel. Madison assists Vida, the pregnant woman, to a bathroom. Alicia goes upstairs and recognizes one of the men’s voices as Jack, from the portable radio. The other man, Reed, punches Travis. Meanwhile, Vida smashes Madison’s head against a mirror then ties her hands. Jack and Reed tie everyone up and hold them at gunpoint. Strand flees on a raft and is shot at by Reed.
In a flashback, Strand meets Thomas Abigail at a bar in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, soon after Hurricane Katrina. Thomas tells Strand that he’s in town to buy property. Strand explains that everything he owns is underwater. Strand assists Thomas to his hotel room, where Thomas passes out. Strand borrows Thomas’s credit cards.
Back in the present day, Strand floats in his raft and tries to dry his satellite phone by blowing on it. Back on the Abigail, Reed threatens to shoot Chris if the group doesn’t produce the key to the boat. Travis and Ofelia explain that Strand had the key, but Travis offers to start the boat by hot-wiring it. Vida rejoins the group with Madison. Alicia tells Madison that Nick wasn’t in his bed. Reed tells Jack to find the portable radio with Alicia so that they can contact their leader, Connor. Alicia assures Madison she will fix the situation and accuses Jack of baiting her. He insists he had no choice, but says that Connor listens to him and will assess the situation when he arrives. “And then I’m safe?” she asks. “I promise,” he says.
Nick arrives at a gated community. Masked by the blood he’s covered in, he walks by an Infected without drawing attention.
In another flashback, Thomas and a companion, Luis Flores, confront Strand about the theft of the credit cards. Instead of calling the cops, Thomas tells Strand to meet him at the bar to discuss how Strand can rectify the situation. Strand says he always intended to pay him back — with interest. In the present, Strand clings to the deflated raft and accidentally drops the phone.
In the wheelhouse, Travis hotwires the Abigail. He tells Reed that he must go to the engine room to override the computers. Daniel asks Madison to distract Vida while he loosens his bonds. Madison asks Vida about her pregnancy. In the engine room, Reed recommends Travis have the boat running by the time Connor arrives, for his own sake. “Prove your value,” he says. Jack radios Connor, who reports that he’s on his way. Jack tells Alicia that he owes Connor for saving his life but insists he doesn’t enjoy what he does. He invites Alicia to join their group. Alicia refuses to abandon her family. Jack promises to ensure her family’s safety even if Connor can’t accept them all into his camp. She hugs him.
Nick knocks on the front door of a home. Luis sneaks up on him with a gun. Nick says that Strand sent him. Luis loads luggage into his car and explains to Nick that the housing development was an “Abigail Home Experience.” Nick asks if Luis is the one who will be getting them all across the border. “What do you mean by all of us?” Luis asks.
As Daniel works his bonds, Madison asks Vida if the baby has been moving. She baits Vida by wondering if a dead baby would turn inside her belly. Vida threatens to shoot Madison. Reed and Travis return from the engine room. Travis hides a crowbar behind a seat cushion before proceeding to the wheelhouse.
Nick and Luis drive to the beach. Luis tells Nick that he only secured passage for two people but Nick figures Strand must have incorporated them into his plans. Luis explains that he met Strand years ago through Thomas Abigail. He says that his mother, who works for the Abigails and raised him and Thomas together, is staying at the Baja house. He brings Nick to the Zodiac.
In a flashback, Strand and Tom sunbathe at the Baja house. Tom urges Strand to put off his work trip to L.A. but Strand says it’s too important to their business. They hold hands.
Travis starts the engine just as Connor arrives. Connor boards the Abigail with two other armed pirates and admires the boat. He invites Travis and Alicia to join his community but says he has no need for the others. He grants Alicia’s request to transport her family safely to shore. Alicia and Travis are taken away. Reed and the bodyguards stay behind to guard the remaining captives.
Nick and Luis cruise toward the Abigail in the Zodiac. Nick looks through binoculars and spots two armed pirates. Luis shoots the pirates, Ben and Breannah, with a rifle. Madison stabs Reed with the crowbar. On board, Madison tells Nick and Luis what happened to Strand. Luis refuses to cross the border without him.
In a flashback, Thomas tries to dissuade Strand from going to L.A., given reports of an outbreak. Strand promises to return in two days. They kiss.
Madison pulls up to Strand in the Zodiac and hoists him aboard.
Aboard Connor's ship, he cooks a steak for Alicia in the galley. After he leaves. Vida steals the steak and locks Alicia in the galley. Alicia ventures through an unlocked door and finds herself on the ship’s bow with no way to escape. Jack warns her that she’s not allowed to roam freely and ushers her back inside. Alicia demands to know if her family made it to safety. Jack agrees to find out.
Aboard the Abigail, a captive Reed informs Daniel that Connor, his brother, has a dozen men and a fleet of five boats and will come looking for him. Daniel allows Chris to stand guard outside Reed’s door. Daniel suggests to Madison that they can use Reed’s relationship to Connor as leverage. They locate Connor’s base by scanning the radar for Connor's fleet. Meanwhile, Strand recovers in the wheelhouse.
Madison steers the Abigail north, but Luis reminds her that they have a small window of time to cross over into Mexico. Madison refuses to abandon her family. Strand agrees to give her half a day to rescue Travis and Alicia. In Spanish, Luis tells Strand that someone is waiting for them and they need to go, but Strand says “he” would understand. Luis counters that he only has enough money for two people to cross the border. “Everything is a negotiation,” replies Strand, as Daniel listens in.
Daniel advises Madison to let Nick and Chris help fight Connor’s group and urges her to stop treating them like children. Madison ignores his advice. Meanwhile, Jack instructs Alicia to scan their radar for more vessels that his people can hijack. Travis wakes up in a cell and is confronted by Alex, who reveals she was throttled Jake on the raft and told Connor how to find the Abigail and capture Travis. Back on the Abigail, Madison forbids Strand from sending Nick on more errands. Strand argues that Nick knows how to survive, but Madison replies that Strand has never seen Nick in the throes of addiction and worries that he is using again.
As Jack spots the Abigail approaching on the radar, Alicia realizes Reed could not have possibly delivered her family to safety in such a short amount of time. Jack admits that Reed sometimes kills passengers after hijackings and offers to help Alicia find her family. Alicia tells Jack to radio Connor and alert him to a potential target vessel. They plan to escape together while Connor performs reconnaissance on the ship. In his cell, Travis tells Alex that he kept her on the raft because he was worried Jake might be infected. “You knew the right thing to do, and you chose the other,” she tells him. Travis apologizes to Alex and shares that he was forced to kill his son’s mother, telling her that "it cost a part of me."
Strand spots Connor's fleet docked along the shore and tells Daniel that they’ve arrived at his base. Reed talks to Chris and riles him up, but Nick shuts the door to tune Reed out. Chris blames himself for allowing Reed’s group onto the boat, but Nick assures him it’s not his fault. Meanwhile, Alicia and Nick find Travis and tell him they’re plotting to escape that night. When Connor radios the Abigail, Madison tells him that they’re holding Reed and will trade him for Travis and Alicia. Connor agrees. However, after Madison signs off, Chris shoots Reed and claims he was about to turn. The group finds Reed dead in the cabin with his face blown off. Madison comforts Chris, who realizes that he just destroyed any hopes of getting Travis back safely.
As Travis and Alicia are prepared for the prisoner exchange, Reed turns as Nick and Ofelia clean the blood in his room. Daniel pins Reed to a wall and places a hood over his head. Daniel hears a disembodied voice telling him to "take his gun." Alicia flees from Jack while Madison prepares the Zodiac. Nick wants to deliver Reed, but Madison refuses to let him go. She leaves with Reed in the Zodiac. Nick and Strand monitor the pier through binoculars and notice that Connor only has Travis. Meanwhile, Alicia comes across Travis's empty cell and is attacked by Vida. Alicia pushes her to the ground and locks her inside the cell. On the pier, Madison hands Reed over to Connor. Connor’s men release Travis. Connor removes Reed’s hood and is immediately bitten by the infected Reed.
Alicia escapes onto the ship’s bow and spots Madison and Travis on the pier, but is cornered by Jack. Jack begs Alicia to stay with him and asks if she really wants to live with the kind of people who abandon survivors like Alex. “I’m sorry,” she says and jumps into the water. Madison and Travis rescue her in the Zodiac and return to the Abigail.
At a church in Valle de Guadalupe, Baja California a priest exhorts his parishioners to fight the dead. The parishioners take their communion wafers one by one. In the town square, the parishioners arm themselves. Thomas arrives in his truck and urges the priest to stop. “Do not protect her,” says the priest. Suddenly, the parishioners begin to drop on their knees in agony as blood pours out of their eyes.
The Abigail approaches a Mexican flotilla that is guarding the border. Travis checks in with Chris, who asks why everyone is mad at him. Travis says that Madison does not believe Reed was infected when Chris shot him. Chris is devastated, thinking Madison was on his side. In the wheelhouse, Luis prepares to meet with his military contact on the flotilla and pay for their passage. Strand sees military officers approaching in a boat. Concerned that a second officer is coming along with Luis’s contact, he orders Madison to hide everyone below deck.
From the engine room, Madison’s group overhears the conversation between Strand, Luis and the two officers. Gunfire erupts after the officers insist on searching the boat to make sure no Infected are aboard. Madison’s group charges upstairs to find a mortally wounded Luis lying next to two dead officers. Daniel stabs the officers to prevent them from turning. Luis begs Daniel not to stab him and hands Ofelia a medallion with an owl’s face, asking that she give it to his mother. Daniel throws the medallion into the ocean. Luis whispers to Nick as Strand steers the Abigail toward the Mexican coastline.
On land, Strand leads the group into town of Valle de Guadalupe. They find a pile of dead parishioners in front of the church. Strand spots Thomas’s truck and calls his name. The group fights off a herd of infected parishioners. Daniel grabs a young infected boy and becomes paralyzed by the memory of clutching a young boy by the neck. Ofelia kills the infected boy for Daniel. Nick sits stunned after killing a young infected girl. Madison is overcome by an Infected and fights for her life. Chris watches her struggle from a few steps away and does nothing to help. Alicia screams at him and saves Madison herself. The group piles into Thomas’s truck and flees.
Strand drives the group to Thomas’s gated estate where Celia, Luis’s mother, greets them. Strand informs her that Luis is dead. “He’s one of them now,” Strand says. “Then he’ll find his way back,” she replies. A maid asks the group to hand over their weapons, which Daniel is reluctant to do. Strand tends to Thomas and learns that he has been bitten. Meanwhile, Alicia accuses Chris of standing by while Madison was attacked. He insists he merely froze, but when Alicia presses him, Chris threatens to hurt her if she tells anyone what she saw. In the kitchen, Nick tells Celia that Luis asked for her when he died. Celia calmly explains that the dead have always walked among them. “The only difference is now we can see them,” she says. Madison overhears their conversation and later warns Celia that Nick is impressionable.
Daniel gazes at photos of the dead posted at an outdoor shrine. He notices an owl carved into a tree trunk, similar to Luis’s medallion. Celia posts a photo of Luis and explains that his death does not faze her because he was not shot in the head. When Madison brings food to Thomas and Strand, Thomas asks her to look after Strand when he dies. Later, Ofelia summons Daniel to dinner and finds him sitting on his bed in a daze. When Alicia tells Madison about Chris’s threat, Madison confers with Travis and worries that Chris is sick. Travis defends Chris and angrily wonders why Madison won’t offer the same support to Chris that he always gave Nick. Madison decides to sleep in Alicia’s room for protection while Travis sleeps with Chris.
Strand urges Thomas to end the suffering and let go of life, offering to kill himself so that they can remain together after death. Nick accompanies Ofelia to the shrine, where Ofelia prays to her mother. Nick sees the owl carving and has a flashback to the drug den at the Los Angeles church. In the flashback, he sees his friend feasting on a body. Meanwhile, Daniel takes a nighttime stroll and sees a young boy, Juan, place a dog down a chute that leads to a wine cellar. Juan explains to Daniel that he’s talking to his mother. Daniel enters the cellar and sees a cell full of Infected. Daniel confronts Celia, who explains that they are all family members of people who work on the estate. As she prepares two communion wafers, Daniel realizes that she killed the parishioners with poisoned wafers. She urges him to make peace with his dead.
Celia brings the wafers to Strand and Thomas and commends Strand for deciding to die with Thomas. She leaves the room and locks it. Nick finds Celia drinking wine in the courtyard. “They’re not really dead, are they?” he asks. She shakes her head and says the Infected are simply “what comes next.” Thomas finally dies, but instead of following through with his death pact, Strand searches Thomas' bedroom drawers. Meanwhile, Chris awakens and sneaks into Alicia’s room, armed with a knife. A gunshot rings out, waking Madison and Alicia. Alicia sees the knife and screams at Chris, who flees. Strand sits next to Thomas with a gun: Thomas is shot in the head.
In a flashback, a young Daniel Salazar stands beside a pond full of dead bodies in the Salvadoran jungle. “Take the gun, Daniel,” a man tells him. Daniel and Ofelia wake to the sound of a gunshot. As they run outside, Ofelia starts to peel the skin off of her face. Daniel wakes up: It was a nightmare. He hears people running in the hall.
Everyone runs to Thomas’s room, where Strand has shot Thomas in the head. Celia screams at Strand for killing Thomas instead of allowing him to turn. Travis asks Alicia to help him find Chris. She refuses, explaining that Chris was holding a knife beside her bed. Celia forbids Strand from burying Thomas and attacks him when he declares that Thomas was not her son. Celia orders Strand and his group to leave by the next day. Travis sees Chris in a vineyard, but Chris runs away.
The next day, Daniel secretly sharpens a razor blade and pockets it. Travis, having spent all night searching for Chris, finds an Infected that he has stabbed through the head. Chris watches Travis from afar. Travis follows a trail of fallen Infected that leads him to a Mexican man inside a shack. The man tries to send Travis away, but Travis collapses from injuries to his bare feet. Madison tells Nick and Alicia to quietly pack supplies so that they can flee to the Abigail and escape Celia’s clutches. Alicia refuses to return to the boat, while Nick defends Celia.
Nick leads an turned Luis to Celia after venturing outside the estate, masked by Infected blood. Celia invites Nick to stay at the estate. He convinces her to allow his family to stay with him as well, but is told that Strand must leave. As Strand digs a grave for Thomas, Daniel urges him not to bury him in such an unholy place. Strand notices Daniel’s unusual behavior and asks what’s wrong with him. Meanwhile, Madison confronts Nick about his fascination with the dead and asks if Celia told him to find Luis. Nick argues that Celia merely wanted her son back, and offers to bring Travis back, as well. He tells Madison that the Infected will not touch him. “I will not die,” he declares.
Daniel tells Ofelia that Griselda, his dead wife, is waiting for them in the afterlife. He grabs her and slashes a man who tries to restrain him. A group of men holds Daniel down. Madison confers with Strand about Nick. Strand is not surprised that Celia was able to indoctrinate a young and vulnerable addict. He invites Madison to join him on the Abigail, but she refuses to leave without Travis. The man in the shack gives Travis some shoes and tries to shoo him out of the house. Travis sees movement underneath the bedroom door. The man whispers to Travis that Chris threatened to hurt his son if he didn’t make Travis leave. Travis barges into the room and finds Chris holding the man’s son at gunpoint. Travis and Chris struggle, ending with Travis wrestling the knife from him. “I’m no good,” Chris says.
After Celia delivers a eulogy beside Thomas’s grave, she tells Strand to leave. Ofelia demands to see Daniel, but Celia says he’s too dangerous. Celia brings food to Daniel, who is tied up in a storage room, and urges him to seek forgiveness from his Dead. Daniel hears Griselda’s voice. After Celia leaves, Griselda’s ghost appears before him. Nick finds Travis, who says that Chris needs him and that Madison must be told he couldn’t find him. Nick leaves Travis with a knife for protection. Madison implores Celia to let Strand stay, but Celia tells her that she must learn to accept the Infected just like Nick does. Madison asks Celia to help her understand.
Daniel talks to Griselda and reflects on all of the people he’s killed. “What about the one that haunts you now?” Griselda asks. In a flashback, young Daniel looks at the pool of dead bodies and notices one of the men is still alive. A man hands him a gun and tells him to shoot. Daniel complies. “The first victim was you,” Griselda tells Daniel. Celia takes Madison to the cellar and enters the cell to show Madison all of her infected “children.” Madison closes the gate, locking Celia in.
Jorge unties Daniel to give him some food. Daniel attacks Jorge and escapes. “I’m waiting for you,” Griselda tells Daniel.
Sofia and the staff escort Strand to the gate. Alicia and Strand wave goodbye to each other as Sofia closes the gate..
Inside the infected-filled wine cellar, Daniel pours gasoline lights it on fire. Instead of seeing the infected, he hallucinates all of the people he has killed when Griselda emerges from the crowd and smiles. The flames lick at Daniel’s feet.
After the fire suddenly consumes the estate, Strand sneaks back in and steals a pick-up truck.
Nick sees the estate on fire.
Madison runs into the storage room and sees Jorge unconscious on the floor and leaves him in search of Daniel.
Outside, Alicia restrains Ofelia, who is crying for Daniel. “He’s gone,” Alicia says. Strand pulls up in the truck and urges them to get in. Nick walks up to Madison and says he couldn’t find Travis. He suspiciously asks where Celia is. “She was right about us,” he says. “We destroy everything.” Strand forces Madison into the truck as Nick turns his back on her. They watch a blood-slathered Nick walk away untouched among the Infected. As Strand and the women flee the compound, Nick walks with the zombies, ignoring his mother and the truck. Outside, Travis and Chris wander through the hillside.
Nick wakes up at a crash house in Baja. He finds Sofia, a member of Celia's extended family. She's going south to find Juan's father but tells Nick to head north if he wants to join up with those like her. She warns him to be wary of strangers on the road, "Manas", who are taking advantage of the new lawless world. Sofia then gives him a backpack full of food and a jug of water and points him towards the highway.
Nick treks through the hills of Baja and reaches the highway. A sign indicates Tijuana is 100 kilometers away. He searches an abandoned car for supplies but finds nothing.
In a flashback, he plays thumb war with his girlfriend Gloria at a rehab facility. She urges him to rehearse an upcoming meeting with his parents to avoid a longer stint in rehab. She role-plays his father and asks him to share his feelings after serving three weeks in rehab. Nick blames his father for being absent in his life.
Back in the present, Nick finds a seemingly abandoned empty house and sets up camp for the night. While he sleeps, a woman sneaks up on him and attacks him with a bat, screaming in Spanish. Behind her is a frightened little girl. Nick tries to get his backpack and water but she chases him out.
He trudges down the road without food or water. He spots a water bottle in a car. He dodges an Infected in the driver's seat and snatches the water. He also takes a radio from the dashboard. When he sees a Jeep approaching, he ducks behind the car. Three outlaws get out of the jeep and kill an elderly man begging for water. They hear Nick's radio crackle and chase him through a field and into a dense thicket. He manages to escape.
He walks through the desert in the blistering sun. Desperate for water and food, he pounds a cactus leaf and eats the flesh, but gags and vomits it up. With little other option, he urinates into his hand and drinks it.
That night, Nick huddles by a van as the temperature plummets. In a flashback, he and Gloria wait in the hallway of the rehab facility. They see Gloria's well-to-do parents check in at the front desk. Madison arrives and waves at him. They are taken to a private room, where in Madison tells Nick why his father isn't visiting; he died in a head-on collision. Nick breaks down and screams in grief. Gloria looks in the room and sees Madison hugging Nick.
In the present, Nick wakes up to two starving dogs barking in his face. He struggles to get away, but one of them viciously bites his leg. He grabs a rock and beats the animal away, and scrambles on top of the van. The barking of the dogs attracts a nearby herd of infected towards the van, which the dogs then attack. Unable to bring one down quickly enough, the dogs are overwhelmed by their numbers and devoured.
Nick rests on top of the van and inspects his leg wound, which is deep. The herd hears him move and swarms the van. He closes his eyes and prays. A vehicle horn sounds in the distance and the herd flocks towards it. Seizing the opportunity, Nick crawls off the van and eats meat from one of the dog carcasses. He removes the belt from a maimed Infected and ties his injured leg with it.
After covering himself in Infected blood, he walks with the herd. Over time, he becomes disoriented from lack of food and water and his vision blurs. He hallucinates the Infected talking to him and they travel down a long road. The outlaws from earlier find the herd and start shooting the Infected. One of the outlaws recognizes Nick within the throng. Spooked by Nick's glare, he freezes and struggles to reload. The herd devours the outlaw and one of his accomplices and the lone survivor drives off.
Luciana and two men watch Nick through binoculars as he travels down the road with the herd, struggling to keep up. Eventually, Nick falls to the ground, dehydrated and exhausted. Francis insists on saving him but Luciana refuses. He tells her that Nick is dying, and she changes her mind.
Nick lays dying on the asphalt, barely conscious. In a flashback, he shoots heroin with Gloria in the shooting gallery at the Los Angeles church, the day before he encountered her undead body. Back in the present, rain begins to fall, reviving Nick who does his best to drink the rain.
The next day, he hobbles into a town and finds a drug store. He looks for medication to treat his festering wound but finds nothing. In a barber shop, Nick wraps his wound with duct tape. Luciana and Francisco approach him and asks if he's infected. Nick assures them it's just a dog bite. They give him water to drink and Luciana invites him to come with them.
A man named Alejandro treats Nick's wound in an infirmary, remarking that Nick is foolish to walk with the dead, despite his reasoning that it is safe. He invites Nick outside and he finds himself in the Colonia, a walled survivor community. The streets are alive with bustling store stalls, people going about their business, and laughing children.
Nick wakes up in an infirmary in Colonia.
He wanders through the town and sees a young girl crying. In a nearby field, the girl’s father stands surrounded by neighbors from the Colonia. “Ready?” asks Alejandro, the community’s leader. The father hands his knife over and enters a bus. Through the bus he passes into a gated field, filled with Infected. He sacrifices himself to the herd as the people look on.
Madison, Alicia, Strand and Ofelia drive around Tijuana in search of Nick. Alicia calls the search futile and insists they return to the Abigail.
In Colonia, Nick sees Alejandro inject an elderly man with medication. Alejandro confers with Luciana. They look at Nick.
Madison’s group arrives at the shore and finds the Abigail missing, stolen by the Mexican military. Alicia suggests they take refuge at a nearby hotel. Using driftwood, they write a message for Travis and Nick, “Abigail Lost Head North.”
They drive to the Rosarito Beach Hotel’s pier and assess the situation from afar.
In Colonia, Nick cleans bloody bandages at a faucet. Luciana enlists Nick to help her in a mission.
Madison’s group pulls up to the hotel and enters the lobby through barricaded doors. Strand rings the bell at the front desk to flush out any Infected.
Luciana brings Nick to the field of Infected and pins an Infected to the wall. She slits its throat and slathers herself in the Infected’s blood. Nick follows suit.
Madison’s group looks for supplies in the hotel ballroom.
Nick and Luciana walk down a Tijuana street. Nick asks Luciana about the man who sacrificed himself to the Infected. Luciana says that the dying sacrifice themselves to the Dead and that once the Dead are gone, the world will be renewed. Nick questions whether Alejandro was actually bitten, since he hadn’t turned. Luciana says she saw it happen.
In the hotel bar, Alicia and Ofelia leave to search the hotel rooms for supplies. Strand offers to make Madison a drink.
Nick and Luciana arrive at a supermarket guarded by local gangsters. Luciana gives the leader, Marco, a bag of medication. In return, she receives a shopping cart. She says the deal was for two carts but Marco says it’s now only one. Nick and Luciana enter the supermarket to shop for supplies.
Madison and Strand drink martinis at the hotel bar.
Alicia and Ofelia collect clothes and food from a hotel room. Alicia finds an Infected hanging from the bathroom showerhead. As they leave, Alicia puts a “Do Not Disturb” sign on the door to indicate an Infected inside.
At the supermarket, Nick puts a candy bar into the cart. Luciana puts it back and tells him to take only what’s essential. Nick sees a large group of dazed junkies camped out in the supermarket. Marco kneels next to one of the junkie women, his sister.
Alicia and Ofelia gather more supplies from a hotel room. Alicia wonders why the man hanged himself. Ofelia guesses he was tired of surviving and predicts they’re not going to make it. Alicia disagrees.
Nick and Luciana leave the market with a full shopping cart. As they walk away, one of the gangsters charges and tackles Nick, revealing a pastry stowed in his pants. Marco comes after Nick with a machete and gets ready to chop off Nick’s hand. Through Luciana’s translation, Nick threatens to stop supplying Oxy for the junkies, including Marco’s sister, if they don’t let him go. In addition, he demands a second shopping cart. Marco begrudgingly agrees.
Nick and Luciana wheel two carts of supplies back to Colonia. Luciana worries the gang will follow them back and yells at Nick for upsetting the gangsters.
Madison and Strand get drunk at the bar and open up to each other. Madison tells Strand about the death of Nick and Alicia’s father: he was driving home from work and his car drifted into oncoming traffic. Strand assumes he fell asleep but Madison explains that, despite what she told her kids, their father killed himself. She worries the same darkness lives in Nick.
Madison flings her glass against the wall, pours more drinks, then flings another glass. Strand bangs on a piano.
Across the street, a trapped herd of Infected pounds on the door of a gift shop, provoked by the noise in the bar.
Alicia takes a shower then looks for Ofelia. She goes to the balcony and sees Infected walking onto balconies, dropping to the ground and flocking to the bar. She hears the loud piano music and screams for Madison.
Alicia runs into the hallway and finds the stairwell packed with Infected.
Back in Colonia, Nick and Luciana drop the supplies off at the pantry. Nick gives the candy bar to the young girl whose father was sacrificed. Luciana ushers him inside a house to meet Alejandro.
Alejandro reprimands Nick for riling up the gangsters. He goes on to explain the importance of faith, saying only the faithful will remain once the world has been washed clean of death. “We have been chosen. We will outlast death,” he says. Nick notices a scar on Alejandro’s shoulder – the bite Luciana spoke of.
Infected begin to swarm the hotel bar.
Alejandro preaches to his people in the Colonia church. Nick stands in the audience.
Madison and Strand fight the Infected and become trapped behind the bar. Alicia stands alone in a room.
“From death we come, and to death we deliver ourselves,” the congregation repeats. Call and response. Nick joins them.
In a flashback, a bride and groom - the ones from the photo Madison saw last episode - dance at their wedding reception in the banquet hall of the Rosarito Beach Hotel. The mother of the bride informs the hotel manager, Elena, that she and her guests will be departing promptly due to reports of a sickness that is spreading. When Elena tries to assure her that they are safe, the mother tells her that the authorities are considering shutting down the border and that she wants to get her folks and the guests north as soon as possible.
As Elena assures her guests that there’s nothing to worry about, the father of the bride dances with his daughter, but has a heart attack and collapses on the dance floor. Elena tries to call for help but the phone lines are dead. As resuscitation attempts fail, the father swiftly reanimates and bites his daughter on the face. As panic erupts, Elena and her nephew flee and lock the party guests inside the banquet hall.
Travis, still suffering from his injured foot, limps down a Mexican road with Chris. They find a car in a nearby town. Chris insists on searching for supplies at a restaurant while Travis hotwires the car. At the restaurant, Chris hears voices in a back room and sees two dead infected. He stuffs a can of beans and several bottles of water into his backpack then kills off incoming Infected, saving one of the armed men that emerge from the kitchen.
While the men are distracted dealing with the infected Chris flees back to the car and urges Travis to drive. A man from the restaurant sees them race off. Travis drives through the night. He lets Chris drive for the first time when he struggles to drive due to his injury.
Alicia hides from the infected roaming the hallways of the Rosarito Beach Hotel. She prepares to leave the room but stops when an infected individual lunges at the door.
On their journey, Travis assures Chris the world will return to normal someday, but Chris is skeptical. When the car runs out of gas, they start a campfire near the road. Travis suggests they find a house in an elevated location that would offer a good vantage point, but Chris questions what their goal is long term. A truck parks on the road: It’s the men from the restaurant.
They hide, and Chris tells Travis that he stole food from the men at the restaurant. The men find their campsite and shout promises not to hurt whoever is hiding in the bushes. Travis and Chris come out of hiding. The men — Brandon, Derek and "baby" James — invite Travis and Chris to eat with them.
Alicia ventures outside the room and gets cornered by Infected. She’s able to escape only by leaping into an elevator shaft and shimmying up the cable to a higher floor, just out of the reach of the Infected. Elena rescues her but threatens her with an axe. “Where is he?” Elena demands.
Travis informs Brandon’s group that San Diego, their hometown, was destroyed by the military along with every major city up to the continental divide. Brandon offers Travis and Chris a ride to the U.S. Travis declines but accepts a ride to the next town.
Alicia asks Elena to help lure the Infected out of the stairwell so that she can get downstairs and find Madison. Elena explains that the wedding party guests took her nephew Hector hostage because they want her keys, which provide access to every hall and building in the hotel. Alicia offers to help Elena find Hector in exchange for Elena’s help getting downstairs.
Chris tells Travis they should join Brandon’s group but Travis worries the men are too dangerous to be trusted. “Maybe that’s what it takes,” replies Chris.
At the hotel, Alicia lures the Infected from the stairwell into a room. Elena shuts the door behind them. Trapped, Alicia runs to the balcony and closes the sliding door. From an adjacent balcony, Elena appears and helps Alicia scale across her way across to safety. Alicia and Elena make their way to the banquet hall. Elena admits that she locked all the party guests inside to contain the illness. “Now they hate me,” she says. Alicia says her group has done worse and vows to keep Elena safe.
Travis and Chris ride with Brandon’s group. Chris sits in the cab with Derek and Baby James, laughing at their cocky banter and joining in with their jokes. He spots a farm in the distance. Brandon’s group drives to the farm to look for food and supplies. Travis pulls Chris aside and suggests they stay at the farm when Brandon’s group moves on. Chris refuses, saying they need to stay with people. He follows Brandon to check out the barn. Brandon’s group finds chickens inside the barn. Overjoyed, they begin chasing down the chickens, hoping for an easy meal.
Meanwhile, Travis notices several freshly marked graves outside the house and races to the barn.
Alicia and Elena find the doors to the hotel bar barricaded. Inside the bar, a herd of Infected pounds on the doors. A small group of wedding party guests approaches them in the lobby, holding Elena’s nephew, Hector hostage. Elena gives them her keys in exchange for Hector. Alicia flings open the bar doors, allowing the herd to swarm the party guests.
Travis runs to the barn and warns the group that whoever buried the people in the graves is still at the farm. The farm owner walks in with a rifle. Travis insists they leave and let the man keep his farm. When Chris and Brandon's group refuse, the man begins yelling at them in Spanish.
Alicia looks for Madison in the bar. She sees a clearly Infected woman in a flannel shirt and assumes the worst, but the Infected only looks like Madison and Alicia can find no other trace of her mother. She flees through an underground tunnel with Elena and Hector. They pound on a locked door as Infected close in around them. Madison opens the locked door and lets Alicia, Elena and Hector through.
With guns drawn on him, the farm owner shoots James in the leg after he snaps a chicken’s neck. With tensions elevated, Chris promptly takes James's gun and shoots the man in the chest, critically wounding him
Travis kneels beside the dying farm owner. He stares disbelievingly at Chris, who holds out his hand to Travis. Travis turns away.
In the bar of the Rosarito Beach Hotel , Madison and Victor fight off an Infected herd . Madison hears Alicia calling for her. She kills an Infected and opens its belly. She and Strand cover themselves in the infected’s blood.
Madison and Strand walk unnoticed among the Infected. They exit the bar and barricade the door behind them. Outside, they find the truck missing. Strand presumes Alicia and Ofelia fled together.
Madison and Strand take refuge inside the hotel’s spa building. Madison tells Strand that Alicia would never abandon them.
Madison and Strand hear a loud knocking sound. They follow the sound to a locked door and hear Alicia screaming for help on the other side. Madison breaks the lock with a fire extinguisher. Alicia, Elena and Hector pile out.
In the Colonia, Nick visits Alejandro at the infirmary and offers to cut the OxyContin pills with powdered milk to increase their drug supply. He shows Alejandro how to crush an OxyContin pill, mix it with dried milk and create a new pill.
Back at the hotel, Madison proposes they look for Ofelia. Alicia says Ofelia fled. They take stock of their meager supplies. Elena says the main hotel has enough food to last for months but the wedding party guests now control everything.
Madison and Strand stand in front of the hotel and call for Oscar, the groom. Oscar appears on a balcony and allows them inside after they drop their weapons.
Nick and Alejandro cut a new batch of diluted OxyContin pills. Nick brings up the bite scar on Alejandro’s neck and expresses skepticism of Alejandro’s claim to have survived an Infected bite.
Madison and Strand meet with Oscar and Ilene, the mother of the bride. Madison proposes they join forces to make the hotel their home and secure it against Infected and enemies. Oscar agrees to help if they kick Elena out. Madison defends Elena. “She killed my daughter,” Ilene says tearfully. Madison tells Oscar that her group will remove all Infected from the hotel with or without him. He gives them the hotel keys.
After the meeting, Madison and Strand predict that they will have trouble convincing Ilene.
Nick packs some bottles of diluted OxyContin to take to the next drug trade. Alejandro tells Nick that he was bitten while trying to rescue a junkie boy who a mob had mistaken for an Infected. His wound then healed without incident, earning him the reputation of the immune.
In the courtyard, Nick and Alejandro see Luciana playing soccer with kids. Nick joins the game. Francisco arrives and tells Alejandro that they found someone torn in pieces. “They found him — Pablo,” Luciana realizes.
Nick and Luciana leave Colonia to make the drug trade. Luciana explains that Pablo was her brother. Nick hugs her as she cries.
Hector, Alicia and Strand begin their sweep of the hotel. Hector opens the door to a hotel room, releasing an Infected. Alicia stabs it in the head.
Alicia and Hector drag Infected bodies from the hotel to the beach. Party guests begin to pitch in. Alicia tells Madison that it will take weeks to clear the entire hotel of Infected. Alicia discovers a riptide under the pier and hatches a new plan to clear the hotel of all Infected in one fell swoop.
Alejandro gives Nick a private trailer. Nick humbly accepts the gift.
Elena brings Madison, Alicia and Strand to a foyer that connects all three sections of the hotel. They devise a plan to channel all the Infected into the foyer and onto the pier.
Outside the hotel, Alicia and Hector lure a herd of Infected inside by playing music on Alicia’s phone.
Meanwhile, Strand and Elena open all the doors to the hotel rooms, releasing the trapped Infected.
As the Infected are let out, Madison bangs on a metal bowl, using the sound to lead them to the connecting foyer. She’s joined by Strand, Elena, Alicia and Hector, all leading herds from different sections of the hotel. When the herds meet, Madison leads the unified pack of Infected out onto the pier.
On the beach, Alicia and Hector ride the Zodiac into the water as party guests watch from shore. Meanwhile, Madison leads the herd to the end of the pier then jumps into the water, where Alicia and Hector rescue her in the Zodiac. The herd follows Madison into the water, where they’re swallowed up by the riptide.
Nick teaches himself Spanish in his trailer. Luciana stops by and asks Nick about his family. He tells her that he lost his father relating that, “We’ve all lost someone.”
Madison’s group and the party guests feast at a large dining table in the hotel. Noting Oscar’s absence, Strand asks Elena where the honeymoon suite is located.
Strand finds Oscar guarding the honeymoon suite. Oscar admits that his undead bride, Jessica, is inside. Strand tells Oscar that the infected Jessica is not his wife anymore. “Death parted you,” he says. “Let me help you.”
Luciana wakes up on Nick’s bed and apologizes for falling asleep. She starts to leave but Nick stops her. They kiss.
Oscar finally gives Strand the key to his room. Strand enters and closes the door behind him.
In a flashback, Ofelia dines with her boyfriend, William, at the same oceanside restaurant. William proposes to Ofelia and asks her to move to Santa Fe, where he is about to take a new job. Ofelia hesitates to leave her parents in Los Angeles but agrees to speak with her mother.
Back in the present, Ofelia studies a map then siphons gas from a car.
At the Rosarito Beach Hotel, it has been ten days since the arrival of Madison's group. United with the wedding guests, the survivors work together to secure the hotel and build a refuge; they fortify the front gate, till a new garden, fish off the pier, and power up the generator.
Reynaldo stops by Nick's trailer to inform Luciana that Francisco and his family snuck out of La Colonia. Reynaldo refuses to make the upcoming Oxy trade without Francisco. Nick volunteers himself and Luciana to make the trade so that the community can have water.
In Elena's room, Madison, Strand, Alicia, and Elena decide to run the generator for just a few hours a week, enough to make ice and boil water. Strand answers a knock at the door. Ilene stabs him. "You took my daughter from me," she says and runs.
Madison tends to Strand's wound in bed. Oscar brings over Andreas, a medical school student. Andreas examines Strand's wound and says he needs a suture kit, antibiotics, and erythropoietin. Elena suggests a place that might have such medicine.
Nick and Luciana inform Alejandro that Francisco left La Colonia. "No thank you, no goodbye," Alejandro says bitterly. He asks Luciana to speak with the scouts to boost morale in the wake of Francisco's departure.
Madison tells Oscar that Ilene must remain locked up indefinitely. She also declares that, going forward, anyone who harms anyone else at the hotel will be banished.
Alejandro addresses his people at the church and urges them to keep their faith in him and in the safety of their home. Afterwards, he questions Luciana's loyalty for neglecting to speak with the scouts immediately. He forbids her and Nick from doing the drug trade, despite Nick's fears that Marco will come for them if he doesn't receive his Oxy.
Madison, Elena, and Oscar get in a van to drive to El Pelícano, the supermarket run by the narcos.
On the road, Elena explains that Hector's brother, Antonio, lives with the narcos. She says Hector has never forgiven Antonio for choosing the gang over his own family.
In Nick's trailer, Luciana worries about Alejandro's mental state. Nick insists that they make the drug trade anyway, but Luciana refuses to disobey Alejandro.
Madison, Elena, and Oscar arrive at El Pelícano with a cooler. Elena tells the guards that she has something for Antonio. They allow Madison and Elena to enter.
Nick again urges Alejandro to make the drug trade. Alejandro refuses and accuses Nick of lacking faith in him.
Madison and Elena give Antonio a cooler full of fish and ice and request the medicine for Strand in exchange. Antonio asks if they can provide more ice. Elena agrees. Antonio tells them to wait. Meanwhile, they hear Marco yelling in an upstairs office.
Upstairs, Marco interrogates his captives, Francisco and Ana, about the location of La Colonia. Francisco assures Marco that someone will deliver the Oxy.
Madison and Elena overhear Marco's interrogation. Madison asks Elena to translate for her and runs upstairs when Marco describes an American with "ratty hair" who delivered drugs to them.
Desperate for news of her son, Madison barges into the office and demands the name of the ratty-haired boy. Francisco forbids Ana from answering. Marco orders them out. Antonio gives them the medicine and tells them to stay away, saying they won't be at the supermarket much longer.
In La Colonia, Nick asks Reynaldo to help him make the drug trade. Reynaldo agrees to accompany Nick that night.
Luciana talks to scouts outside Nick's trailer. She notices a look on Nick's face. He insists nothing is wrong.
At the hotel, Alicia lays a blanket over Strand and compresses his wound. She explains that she helped Nick through his detox withdrawals and says that Madison still doesn't fully see her. "Then make her," Strand suggests.
Nick surveys the area from a La Colonia rooftop. Marco, who is staked out nearby, spots Nick through binoculars.
Ofelia studies a map in her truck. She looks at her rosary beads.
In a flashback, Ofelia talks to Griselda about their family. Griselda explains that she and Daniel left El Salvador to shelter Ofelia from the violence and bloodshed and vows to do anything for Ofelia and Daniel. "That is love," she says. Ofelia takes her hand, choosing her family over William.
In the present, Ofelia kisses the rosary beads and hangs them on her rearview mirror. She drives toward the U.S.
Madison, Elena, and Oscar return to the hotel after dark. Madison runs to the generator and turns it on, lighting up the hotel sign in the hopes of signaling Nick. Alicia warns Madison that people will see the sign from all around and accuses Madison of thinking more about Nick than her, even though Nick chose to run away.
Travis stands in the hills overlooking the Rosarito Beach Hotel and spots the hotel's neon sign.
A mass of desperate survivors arrive at the gate of the Rosarito Beach Hotel after spotting the neon sign that Madison flashed the previous night. Madison, Alicia, Elena, Oscar, and Hector stand guard, refusing entry. Madison sees Travis in the crowd and fights to let him in.
In a recent flashback, James writhes in agony after a farmer shot his leg in the Baja barn. The farmer lies dead on the ground following Chris’ fatal gunshot. Travis orders Brandon, Derrik and Chris to stop James’ bleeding while he finds something to stitch up the wound.
Travis runs to the farmhouse and finds gauze, scissors, and sewing supplies.
Travis sews the entry wound shut then rolls James over to sew up the exit wound. James screams in pain. Travis assures the group that James will get better with time.
Travis buries the farmer next to his family and makes a cross for the headstone.
Brandon, Derek, and Chris laugh around a campfire while feasting on chicken and beer. Travis checks in with James and asks him to rate his pain on a scale of 1 to 10. James is hesitant to admit he’s in pain in front of his friends. Travis urges James to alert him if his condition worsens.
Travis pulls an unrepentant Chris aside and chastises him for killing the farmer and feeling no remorse. Chris defends his actions and warns Travis to be careful how he acts with Brandon’s crew. “We need them,” he says.
In the present, Madison opens the gate for Travis but keeps the other survivors out.
Travis stares despondently at the ocean from a hotel balcony and asks Madison where Nick is. Madison says that Nick ran away, then asks where Chris is. Travis sits on the bed, emotionally overcome. “I had no choice,” he says.
At the farm, a week has passed, and Brandon announces that they’re moving on to their next location. Travis argues that James is not well enough, but James insists he’s okay to travel. Derek says they’re going to San Diego. Travis reiterates that San Diego was destroyed and asks Chris to back him up, but Chris says they never actually went to San Diego.
Travis finds the farmer’s driver’s license and carves the farmer’s name onto the headstone. Chris tells him the group is waiting on him to leave. Travis snaps at Chris and orders them to wait.
Travis helps the others move James onto the truck. James winces but insists he’s okay. As they start to drive, however, the pain becomes unbearable. James begs Travis not to tell Brandon, then passes out. Travis orders Brandon to stop.
That night, Travis overhears Brandon, Derek, and Chris discussing killing James. Chris points out that James isn’t getting better. Travis insists he’ll get better with time and that they can survive at the farmhouse long enough for him to recover. He grabs Chris’ gun and refuses to let them kill James.
Travis guards James and informs him that his friends want to kill him. James explains that they had a friend, Troy, who became infected and made them promise to kill him before he turned. When the time came, however, Troy changed his mind. James says that he offered an apology to Troy before putting him down. Travis says this is different because James isn’t dying, but James insists it doesn’t matter as long as they think he’s dying.
The next morning, Chris brings food to Travis in the barn and says he’s afraid of Brandon and Derek. Travis assures him he’ll be okay. They hug. Chris seizes the moment and tackles Travis, pinning him down. Brandon and Derek rush in. Brandon shoots James dead, despite the latter's pleas for mercy.
Later, Brandon and Derek load the truck. Travis, who is staying behind, desperately implores Chris to stay with him. Chris says he’s better off without Travis, and says that he has adapted to the new world, whereas Travis hasn't. He leaves the farm with Brandon and Derek.
Travis buries James and then heads into the wilderness.
Back in the present, Travis finishes his story saying that he spent two days afterward searching for the ocean before seeing the hotel's lights. Madison assures Travis that he didn’t have a choice and reminds him that Chris is still out there. Travis regrets not telling Chris that he loved him when they parted ways. Madison holds his hand.
Madison goes to the parking garage and finds it filled with survivors. Andrés explains that they let the 43 survivors in and are examining them for infection. Behind a curtain, Alicia examines a woman for bite wounds. Madison takes her for a walk.
On the pier, Madison tells Alicia that her father's car accident was actually a suicide. Alicia reels from the news and asks what the suicide note said. “I love you all, enough’s enough,” Madison says. She explains that she never told Alicia and Nick because she wanted to protect Nick, who she worried would end up like his father. She says the only reason she paid less attention to Alicia over the years was that she believed she was doing alright. They hug.
That night, a small group of survivors arrive at the hotel gate — including Brandon and Derek.
In the middle of the night, Nick sneaks out of bed with Luciana and meets Reynaldo. They skulk into the infirmary and steal OxyContin. At daylight, they pass through the bus out of La Colonia to deliver the drugs to Marco.
Alicia brings Travis some food. Travis admits that Chris is sick and apologizes for not believing or protecting her when she said that Chris threatened her.
Nick gives Marco the OxyContin, but Marco says he no longer has a need for their supply. He tells Nick that he has joined forces with a more powerful gang and plans to take over La Colonia. Nick asks what will happen to the residents, but Marco doesn't care. To prove it, Marco reveals the executed bodies of Francisco, his wife, and daughter. He advises Nick to leave La Colonia immediately if he wants to live.
Madison checks in with Alicia, who is taking care of survivors in the parking garage. Alicia expresses her disdain for Brandon and Derek, who are loudly disparaging the Mexican patients and complaining about Brandon's dislocated shoulder.
Madison tries to quiet Brandon and Derek down. She asks what happened and learns that Brandon hurt his shoulder in a car accident after they let their 16-year-old companion, a kid from Los Angeles, drive without a license. They say the driver died in the accident. Madison deduces that they are the men who Chris joined up with.
Madison tells Strand that Brandon and Derek are in the parking garage and that she suspects Chris is dead. Strand discourages her from telling Travis, as it would destroy the only thing that keeps him going. It's the same hope Strand lost when Thomas died. Madison agrees that the news about Chris would break Travis.
Nick tells Luciana that Marco's gang is about to attack La Colonia and apologizes for sneaking away.
At the infirmary, Nick and Luciana brief Alejandro on Marco's impending assault. Nick urges Alejandro to vacate La Colonia immediately. The debate is interrupted by a patient who has turned. The infected attacks and, in the ensuing scuffle, Alejandro and two others are bitten. Nick kills the infected by pressing his fingers through the eyeballs, into the brain. Alejandro gapes at the bite on his arm, but he assures Nick and Luciana that he will be fine.
Ofelia follows the fence at the Mexican-American border and finds a hole. She crosses into America.
The La Colonia townspeople say farewell as the infected infirmary victims offer themselves up to the herd in the yard. Nick tells Luciana he's worried about Alejandro. She assures him that Alejandro's faith will heal him.
In the parking garage, Madison tells Brandon that Andrés will require privacy to fix his shoulder. As they escort Brandon and Derek away, the other survivors complain that Americans are receiving preferential treatment. The crowd becomes unruly.
Travis hears a commotion outside and sees a mob of survivors following Madison as she escorts Brandon and Derek to the gate. He runs outside and demands to know where Chris is.
Nick packs a bag in his trailer and tells Luciana they must leave, refusing to believe that faith will protect them from Marco's gang. Alejandro stops by. Nick orders Alejandro to tell Luciana his secret. Alejandro admits that he is not immune to infected bites, explaining that the bite on his neck actually came from the boy he was trying to save, not from an infected. Luciana reels from the news. Nick begs Luciana to come with him. She refuses, saying La Colonia is her home.
Ofelia trudges through the desert and ducks for cover when someone starts shooting at her. A man armed with Assault Rifle discovers her hiding behind a tree. "Welcome to America," he says.
Travis and Madison take Brandon and Derek to the hotel cafe. After Andrés fixes Brandon's arm, Travis interrogates them about Chris. They explain that they were tired from avoiding bandits, and Chris offered to drive the truck so that they could catch up on sleep. When he veered off the road, the truck rolled, Chris was thrown from the truck, and died on impact.
Travis asks where Chris was buried, and Derek says they pulled him from the wreck and buried him under a tree. Travis notices discrepancies in the two stories. He locks Madison and Oscar out of the cafe and begins to get physical with Brandon and Derek, demanding the truth. Brandon admits that Chris survived the wreck but suffered a leg injury, so they shot him dead in the road. "We had to," he pleads. Travis savagely beats Brandon and Derek to death, smashing heads and breaking limbs. During that, Travis unintentionally smashes Oscar's head with a door.
He sinks to the floor, devastated.
Travis sits dazed on the hotel cafe floor after killing Brandon and Derek. Hector and Elena haul Travis away and remove Oscar, who is unconscious after Travis attacked him to prevent him from interfering. Madison tries to defend Travis, but Elena points out that he killed two men and badly hurt Oscar.
Madison returns to the cafe and stabs Brandon and Derek through the head.
Madison tells Elena that they will leave with Travis in the morning and asks her to release Travis from captivity. Elena feels she owes Madison and allows it despite Hector's reluctance.
Madison enters the game room where Travis is locked up and tells him that she and Alicia will leave with him in the morning.
Andrés treats Oscar, who is still unconscious. Alicia offers to help. He tells her he must remove a piece of Oscar's skull to reduce swelling and orders her to leave.
Alejandro warns the townspeople that men are coming to kill them, but that their faith will protect them. "We will not die today," he declares.
Andrés drills into Oscar's head as Elena and Hector stand by.
That night, Madison joins Travis on the balcony of their hotel room and assures him that Brandon and Derek deserved their fate. She says that she too killed someone — Celia — in order to protect Nick.
Oscar dies on the operating table. Andrés slams his fist in anger. Hector seethes and rants to Elena that Travis is safe and sound upstairs. Elena reminds him that they made a deal with Madison.
Hector and Andrés barge into Travis' room and beat him. Andrés holds a gun to Travis' head. Alicia stabs Andrés, and a melee ensues. Strand grabs Andrés' gun and orders everyone out. "We need to run," he says.
Travis, Madison, and Alicia pile into a car outside the hotel. Strand gives the gun to Madison and stays behind. Travis accelerates and plows through the front gate.
Nick returns to La Colonia and goes to Alejandro in his trailer. Nick says he saw a medevac helicopter land in a camp near the border and urges Alejandro to give the villagers permission to flee. Nick says he and Luciana can lead the villagers north.
Madison, Travis, and Alicia go to El Pelícano to look for Nick. They discover the bodies of Francisco's family in the back of the empty market, bullet wounds through their heads. They find Francisco's driver's license with his La Colonia address.
Marco's gang finds the town deserted and celebrates their easy victory. Alejandro watches from a hiding spot then goes to the school bus in the yard. He starts the bus. Marco hears the bus and runs toward the yard.
Alejandro drives the bus forward, unblocking the fence gap and allowing the infected to flood into La Colonia. Marco's gang sees the herd walking toward them and runs.
Nick and Luciana lead the villagers toward the U.S. border.
Madison, Travis, and Alicia arrive in La Colonia. While Madison and Travis enters La Colonia to search for Nick, Alicia stays behind in the yard and notices the stalled school bus.
In the town square, Travis and Madison encounter a large herd of infected, which now includes Marco and his gangsters.
Madison and Travis find Alicia on the bus, tending to a dying Alejandro. Madison tells Alejandro she's looking for Nick. Alejandro informs Madison that Nick went to the border because he saw something, but dies before he can mention the camp.
Nick, Luciana, and the Colonists arrive at the border crossing. A plume of smoke rises in the distance. Through binoculars, Nick sees the medevac helicopter leaving a refugee camp. An armed survivor suddenly pops up from behind an abandoned vehicle and shoots Luciana, then the entire armed group emerges and open fire onto the Colonists. Nick and Luciana hide behind a booth but are captured by one of the attackers.
On the bus, Alicia hands Madison her Balisong. Madison closes Alejandro's eyes, turns his head to the side, and drives in the blade, preventing him from reanimating.
The armed men separate Nick and Luciana and shove them to the ground.
