Nicholas Clark, better known as Nick, is the deuteragonist (previously tritagonist) and a survivor of the outbreak in AMC's Fear The Walking Dead. He is the son of Madison Clark and Steven Clark, who died a few years before the apocalypse. He has a sister named Alicia. Nick has had a troubled past and has always chosen the wrong road. He is very down to earth but flawed individual with severe addictions to drugs, specifically heroin. Despite his flaws, Nick is a very intelligent young man, and is shown to care for his immediate family and eventually the family of his mother's boyfriend Travis after some reluctance. He was a former member and resident of the Broke Jaw Ranch community. He is currently a resident of the Dell Diamond Baseball Stadium community.
"Madison's screwed up teenage son. He’s too old to stay home, too scared to flee... pretty much a parent’s worst nightmare. He has flunked out of college, had a lot of trouble, got mixed up in some bad elements, and is definitely the problem child. And it’s exacerbated for him to be next to this perfect sister who seemingly doesn’t have anything going on in her life that is negative." - Kirkman
Nick is a flawed teenager who suffers from heroin addication. This addiction often causes trouble for his family, who suffer because of this, his attempts to stop result in failure. During withdrawal he oftens spends time searching for drugs, even when its not appropriate, such as when visiting Matt Sale's house. This addiction can leave him to perform selfish acts, such as stealing Hector Ramirez's morphine IV, endangering his life.
However he can be selfless at times, such as wanting his mother to tell the Cruz family what is happening, worrying that they would be killed by the new threat or letting Griselda Salazar have his oxycontin instead of himself, due to her injury.
He is quite intelligent and quick thinking, such as being the first member of the group to realize that the infected aren't infected, but rather dead, going as far as to prevent Alicia from visiting Matt, as he knew he would already be dead and attack her.
Nick, as can be seen by his drug habit, suffers from an addictive personality. His mother, Madison, claims that his volunteering to go ashore with Reed in "Captive" was yet another addiction for Nick-- that he was seeking out danger as a substitute for heroin. Nick is also impressionable and easily led by those with a stronger personality, such as Victor Strand, Celia Flores, Alejandro Nuñez, Luciana Galvez and Jeremiah Otto.
Los Angeles, California
Prior to the outbreak, Nick struggled with an addiction to drugs, and was in and out of rehab many times. He had a difficult relationship with his father, who he believed had "changed" and become distant and was no longer fulfilling his duties as a father. During this time, Nick was often living somewhere in Los Angeles (possibly the abandoned church that became a junkie den), though often not at home with his own family. Some time prior to the beginning of the outbreak, Nick met Gloria in rehab and began a relationship with her. It was during one of these times in rehab that Nick's father was killed in a head-on collision. The loss devastated Nick and which led to his depression and relapse into his use of heroin. One of his drug dealers and friends was Calvin. Around the beginning of the apocalypse, Nick spent a lot of his time in an abandoned church with his girlfriend, Gloria, and other fellow junkies where they used substances together.
Nick awakens alone in an abandoned church after taking drugs with his girlfriend Gloria and other fellow junkies, the night before. While searching for Gloria he finds the fresh, bloody corpse of a fellow junkie and then Gloria herself who has died from heroin overdose, reanimated and now feasting on the body of another addict.
Nick escapes before she can attack him, but is then hit by a car and ends up in hospital with minor injuries and possible concussion. In the hospital he is treated for his injuries but is detained and given a psych evaluation because of the things he was saying when he was admitted. (Nick was apparently telling people what had happened in the church) He is also restrained because it's thought he might harm himself.
The police try to question him about what happened the night and are told to leave by his mother, Madison Clark when she and Travis Manawa arrive. Whilst in the hospital he tells Travis enough about what happened at the church for Travis to go there himself. Later, Nick convinces a nurse to release the restraints on one hand and immediately dresses and leaves the hospital, taking the clothes from the belongings bag of the patient in the next bed. Nick leaves the hospital without being challenged and without telling his family where he is going.
Once out he goes through the pockets of the clothes he's stolen and takes shelter under a bridge. The next day he buys a mobile phone and arranges to meet Calvin, his drug dealer to try and find out what had happened at the church.
Calvin tries to kill Nick by taking him to a secluded spot and shooting him. Nick spotted his pistol and realizes what is happening, fights back and in the struggle Calvin's gun goes off and Calvin is fatally wounded. Nick leaves Calvin's body and the gun by the car and calls Travis for help, making Travis promise that he won't bring Madison.
Travis arrives with Madison and they all go to look at Calvin's body. The body is gone but the car and gun are still there. When Travis reverses away from the scene with Madison and Nick in the car Calvin appears in the tail lights of the pickup. Madison and Travis get out to try and help what that think is someone that needs help.
Nick knows already that Calvin is dangerous and runs him over with the pickup, repeatedly. Calvin's body, still reanimated and trying to attack them, ends up horribly damaged at the bottom of a concrete ramp.
Nick arrives back home with Madison, Travis, and Alicia in the Travis' pickup from the Sale home. He goes straight into the house and is looking through the blinds when Madison comes in. He asks if she is going to the Cruz family (who live opposite the Clark home) what is happening and she eventually agrees to tell them something. She reassures him that he did what he had to do for good reason (killing Calvin, she means) and they acknowledge that Nick is about to go through an extremely hard time withdrawing from heroin.
Quite soon Nick starts to feel sick and begins to go into withdrawal, he vomits and is not able to do anything. Madison tries to contact his Doctor but, that failing, decides after talking with Alicia to go to the school where she works and take some drugs from there.
While his mother is out Nick has an argument with Alicia because she wants to leave and check on her boyfriend Matt, has a seizure and then is cared for by her.
Much later, when Madison returns with OxyContin from the school for him, he lies to his mother about Alicia. He doesn't appear to notice, even though it's quite obvious, that Madison has been through a bad time while she was out.
When Alicia attempts to go out and help Joanna Cruz because she's being attacked by Peter Dawson, Nick stays on the couch and does nothing, leaving his mother to take the responsibility for stopping Alicia from trying to help Joanna.
Nick, Alicia and Madison try to spend time while waiting for Travis to return. After a brief game of Monopoly, Nick raises the possibility that Travis might not come home. Something starts banging and scratching on the backyard door. Nick opens it to find a German Shepard dog, it's covered in blood. They take him in, and the dog begins barking frantically at the front door. Nick looks out the window again to see the reanimated corpse of Peter Dawson in the street, stumbling towards their house. Nick remembers a shotgun that their neighbors have, and they leave their house to go after it. They search the house and find the shotgun and several shotgun shells, which they take but the dog has already met its end.
The next day, Nick is hidden at the side of an unknown house, and tries to break in via a window. A little girl in the house next door witnesses his act and playfully waves the hand of her doll to Nick. Nick awkwardly waves back, and ceases his break in attempt. While walking away, Nick hears a plane engine and a loud bang, and looks to the sky to see a commercial airliner descending and turning dangerously, seemingly out of control.
With the arrival of the military, life seems to have settled into a routine. The episode opens with Nick sunbathing in the pool.
Madison goes out to the pool to give Nick his Oxycontin that he's forgotten to take. Somehow. He says he doesn't need it anymore, says to give it to Griselda. Eventually she gives up and walks back in, telling him to enjoy his swim. Nick keeps track of when Liza leaves the Ramirez home Cynthia Ramirez tell Liza goodbye, Liza's been caring for Cynthia's husband, Hector Ramirez and gets out of the pool. Through a gap in the fence he sees Liza leave and Cynthia come out of the house to do some gardening.
Nick must sneak into the house because the next time we see him he's lying under Hector's bed, he's taken Hector's Morphine IV, put it in a vein in his foot and is lying there listening to Hector's laboured breathing.
Nick is sleeping in a chair in the back yard when Liza and Dr. Exner go out to the back yard to him. He tells her that he's already gone through withdrawal and doesn't need methadone and that he last used 2 days before the world ended. Travis arrives and welcomes Dr. Exner. Exner carries on with her examination of Nick. Travis asks more questions and Liza lets slip that Hector has gone to the hospital along with Griselda. Nick is alarmed and Exner notices, but he says he's fine. He asks about Hector and she tells him - despite having told Travis a moment ago she couldn't discuss patients when he asked about Doug. She notes that Nick's pulse becomes agitated when he hears about Hector and he tries to deflect her suspicions and charm her by saying that she's a very attractive woman.
Madison later catches him searching the Ramirez home for drugs. He is sullen, mocking and she slaps his face, hitting him over and over, he curls up in a ball and she leaves.
Later, at home, Nick pushes Alicia out of his room when she tries to go in, his face is bruised. He won't let her or Travis in at first and Alicia tells Travis to let her handle it. Travis leaves her to it and Nick opens the door when Alicia threatens to get their mom. He lets her in but doesn't tell her who hit him and she comforts him.
The military arrive for Griselda. Liza helps them take her out on a stretcher, and then want Nick. Nick tries to run but they catch him and cable tie his wrists behind him, there's a good deal of shouting and chaos, Madison's small house in candlelight looks very full of soldiers.
Daniel and Chris try to stop them taking Nick and get pushed to the ground. Travis stands between the soldiers and them, telling the guardsmen to take it easy - they calm down. But it's Daniel and Chris who try to stop the soldiers, not Travis.
Liza tries to stop them taking Nick and asks Dr. Exner to intervene. Exner tells her that if she wants to help to get in the truck, that she needs her. The soldiers put Nick in the back of the Humvee and it drives off.
He is trapped in a room with Victor Strand where the later saves him from being taken away by a guard. Nick asks why and Strand relies that he will require a man of Nick's talents when he makes his move.
Nick is first seen walking around his cell. Him and Strand begin talking about Nick's background until the power goes out and everyone starts panicking. Strand tells him that it's time to leave and that Nick should follow him close. Strand appears to be unable to find his key, which leaves Nick revealing that he has it, hold it up in front of Strand. After they escape the cell, others beg to be released, but Strand insists that Nick does not help them as it could slow them down and decrease their chances of survival. Nick asks where they are headed to which Strand replies they are going for "Abigail".
Nick and Strand find themselves in a hallway. Nick tries to go ahead, but is pulled back when some soldiers are heard coming down the steps. They make it past the stairwell and through another hallway, closing the door behind them, with the door automatically locking, unbeknown to them. The two find a room, where they spot a soldier being eaten by a single zombie. More zombies find themselves into the room from outside, to which Nick and Strand are forced to flee. Madison, Travis, Ofelia, and Daniel find Nick's holding cell, but he isn't there. They continue their search, freeing the others.
Nick and Strand continue to run away from the zombies. They reach the door, now realizing that it had locked behind them. Trying as hard as they can, they try to push the door open by slamming themselves into it. Madison and the others find Nick and Strand. Madison desperately tries to open the door, promising Nick her and Travis will get them out. As the zombies get closer, Nick tells his mother to go and save herself, to which Madison is shocked. At this moment, Liza catches up with the rest of the group. She uses her card to override the system and unlock the door, saving the two. Liza leads the group downstairs to the kitchen to try and find a way out, but they are found by a few zombies. Madison is being attacked by a zombie, where Nick kills it, saving her life. After leaving the kitchen, Madison asks who Strand is, to which Nick tells her he saved his life.
The group make it back to the cars, where Alicia and Chris are waiting. They all reunited, but this happy moment is ruined when Andrew tries to get revenge on Daniel by shooting Ofelia. Travis beats Andrew for this, leaving Nick and Alicia visibly shocked. The group hit the road, on the way to the ocean, following Strand's advice. They arrive at Strand's ocean home. Strand stares through a telescope at the ocean and motions Nick to look also, which is a yacht off the shore. When Liza is put down by Travis, everyone, including Nick hears the gunshot, not knowing what was going on. Nick is shocked, but doesn't look for the source.
Nick watches on as the plane experiences turbulence in the sky.
Nick is first seen getting on an inflatable Zodiac boat will lead to Abigail, Strand's yacht. He spends most of his time alongside Strand and talking with him. Eventually, Nick runs into Ophelia and asks if she needs to help with her bandages, she declines and Nick tells her to apply ice to her wound and drink lots of vodka. He is later seen looking over Liza's corpse as Travis gives a eulogy. He witnesses Chris angrily push her body into the ocean.
Later on, Alicia informs the group that a man named Jack was talking to her via a radio and his ship was sinking. Strand angrily asks her if she disclosed any important information to them, to which she replies she didn't. Nick backs her up and tells Strand she only wanted to help the people. Nick sits down with Strand and questions what his contribution to the group is, to which Strand says it's his fearlessness.
Later on ,the group eats dinner together. Nick notices Chris going out on the deck. The group sees dense fog, that fades and reveals a destroyed skiff boat with tons of bullet holes. Chris ends up jumping into the water and going for a swim. Nick follows after him. They discover the destroyed skiff and end up getting Chris back to the boat via the inflatable Zodiac. Nick dives into the overturned skiff and collects the ship's log book. He returns to Abigail and Strand starts the yacht up, as the people who destroyed the skiff are near.
As the Abigail approaches Catrina Island, Nick goes to the island with Madison, Travis, Alicia, and Chris to explore the island. Upon meeting the Geary's, becomes quick friends with their son, Harry.
Harry brings Nick to his room and shows him action figures with red dots on their foreheads, representing gunshot wounds. Harry says that he won't get sick because his family has "power pills." "It's like a vitamin," he explains, "if I take it my family stays together." He becomes concerned about him and his sister.
While searching for drugs, Nick stumbles upon the pills Harry spoke of and recognizes them as poison and agrees that the children should come with them on the Abigail. However, Willa dies and turns and Harry remains home with his gum-wielding older brother, Seth.
Alicia, Nick, and Chris insist on going to shore to gather supplies and Daniel accompanies them on the Zodiac.
Nick finds a knife in a suitcase and pockets it and he finds a large stash of Amoxicillin for Ofelia. He falls into a pit and kills a walker with a knife he found earlier.
Nick arrives covered in blood and helps fight off the infected, allowing the group enough time to escape. As they flee, Nick realizes that the infected are not attacking him. He walks into the herd and comes face-to-face with one. The infected smells him, but is unmoved as Nick snarls back at it. Nick is brought out of his trance by Alicia's voice, and retreats and returns to the boat with the others.
Nick swims ashore naked in the middle of the night, having escaped the detection of a helicopter and a patrol boat. On shore he pulls out his clothes from a plastic bag and puts them on. He arrives at a recently-abandoned refugee camp on the beach. After attracting the attention of an Infected, he lures it into one of the tents and kills it, smearing himself in blood from the Infected’s belly.
The next day, Nick walks into an abandoned, gated community. Masked by the blood he’s covered in, he walks by an Infected without drawing attention. He finds a house and knocks on the front door of a home. Luis sneaks up on him with a gun. Nick says that Strand sent him.
Luis loads luggage into his car and explains to Nick that the housing development was an “Abigail Home Experience.” Nick asks if Luis is the one who will be getting them all across the border. “What do you mean by all of us?” Luis asks.
Nick and Luis drive to the beach. Luis tells Nick that he only secured passage for two people but Nick figures Strand must have incorporated them into his plans. Luis explains that he met Strand years ago through Thomas Abigail. He says that his mother, who works for the Abigails and raised him and Thomas together, is staying at the Baja house. He brings Nick to the Zodiac.
Onboard, Madison tells Nick and Luis what happened to Strand. Luis refuses to cross the border without Strand.
While he is loading guns, Madison walks in and forbids Nick from pulling any more stunts. However he continues to load and check the guns as he feels he needs to help.
Later, when Reed riles up Chris, Nick takes Chris out of the room and shuts the door to tune Reed out. Chris blames himself for allowing Reed’s group onto the boat but Nick assures him it’s not his fault.
A gunshot goes off. Chris has shot Reed in the face. Ofelia and Nick clean the blood in Reed’s room and ponder the thought of Chris killing the pirate in cold blood as opposed to preventing him from turning into a walker. Reed turns and attacks Ofelia. Before the two can kill Reed for good, Daniel stabs the walker in the shoulder and pins him to a wall, leaving him alive.
Madison prepares the Zodiac. Nick insists on delivering Reed to Connor, but Madison refuses to let him go. When he say he "has" to do it, she retorts that's he "wants" to do it. She leaves with Reed in the Zodiac.
Nick and Strand monitor the pier through binoculars as the trade is in progress.
After hiding below deck with the rest of the survivors from the military officers who are in negotiation with Strand and Luis in regards to safe passage to Mexico which results in gunfire, Nick along with his family charges upstairs to find a dying Luis. After Luis protests to Daniel not to kill him, Luis whispers to Nick.
On land, Nick follows Strand into town where they discover a pile of dead parishioners in front of the church. Strand spots Thomas’s truck and calls Thomas’s name. The group fights off a herd of infected parishioners. Nick sits stunned after killing a young infected girl. After the struggle, Nick along with the rest of the group departs in Thomas's truck.
Strand drives the group to Thomas’s gated estate where Celia, Luis’s mother, greets them.
In the estate's kitchen, Nick tells Celia that Luis asked for her when he died. Celia calmly explains that the dead have always walked amongst them. “The only difference is now we can see them,” she says. Madison overhears their conversation and later warns Celia that Nick is impressionable.
Later in the night, Nick accompanies Ofelia to the estate's shrine, where Ofelia prays to her mother. Nick sees the owl carving that hangs above the shrine and has a flashback to the drug den at the Los Angeles church. In the flashback, he sees his former girlfriend, Gloria, feasting on a body.
Nick finds Celia drinking wine in the courtyard. “They’re not really dead, are they?” he asks. She shakes her head and says the Infected are simply “what comes next.”. Nick is later awakened by Strands gunshot when Thomas is put down after succumbing to his walker bite.
The day following Thomas's death, Madison tells Nick and Alicia to quietly pack supplies so that they can flee to the Abigail and escape Celia’s clutches. Alicia refuses to return to the boat while Nick defends Celia.
Later in the day, Nick appears leading an infected Luis to Celia after venturing outside the estate, masked by Infected blood. Celia invites Nick to stay at the estate. He convinces her to allow his family to stay with him but she insists that Strand must leave.
While Nick cleans himself up, Madison confronts Nick about his fascination with the dead and asks if Celia told him to find Luis. Nick argues that Celia merely wanted her son back then offers to bring Travis back, as well. He tells Madison that the Infected will not touch him. “I will not die,” he declares.
Per Madison's request, Nick later departs to find Travis and discovers him in the hills. Travis, deciding Chris in his current state isn't ready to be around people just yet, orders Nick to tell Madison that he couldn’t find him. Concerned, Nick leaves Travis with a knife for protection. As Nick walks back, he witnesses the estate on fire and hastily runs towards it where he discovers Madison, Alicia, Strand and Ofelia ready to depart. After lying to Madison that he was unsuccessful in finding Travis, he suspiciously asks where Celia is. Realizing Celia's demise, Nick laments on the state of his family and the destruction of the estate; "She [Celia] was right about us,” he says. “We destroy everything.” Refusing to join his family, Nick departs into the oncoming swarm of Infected that approach the estate as Madison hopelessly watches on.
The morning after the Abigail Family Vineyard burns down, Nick awakens in a house with Sofia standing over him and Juan playing outside. He informs Sofia of his plans to head north towards the city of Tijuana, while Sofia continues south with Juan towards La Paz. Sofia gives him supplies and wishes him luck.
In a flashback, he plays thumb war with his girlfriend Gloria at a rehab facility. She urges him to rehearse an upcoming meeting with his parents to avoid a longer stint in rehab. She role-plays his father and asks him to share his feelings after serving three weeks in rehab. Nick blames his father for being absent in his life. Nick treks through the hills of Baja and reaches the highway. A sign indicates Tijuana is 100 kilometers away. He searches an abandoned car for supplies but finds nothing.
Nick finds a seemingly abandoned empty house and sets up camp for the night. While he sleeps, a woman sneaks up on him and attacks him with a bat, screaming in Spanish. Nick doesn't get time to get his supplies and water as she chases him out.
The following day, he is walking along an abandoned highway when he comes across wrecked cars. He scavenges for water, when a gang roll up and take care of several Infected on the road. They spot Nick and chase him, but he escapes. For his second night on the road, he sleeps on top on a wrecked van. That night, Nick huddles by a van as the temperature plummets. In a flashback, he and Gloria wait in the hallway of the rehab facility. They see Gloria's well-to-do parents check in at the front desk. Madison arrives and waves at him. They are taken to a private room, where in Madison tells Nick why his father isn't visiting; he died in a head-on collision. Nick breaks down and screams in grief. Gloria looks in the room and sees Madison hugging Nick.
The following day, Nick wakes up to two starving dogs barking in his face. He struggles to get away, but one of them viciously bites his leg. He grabs a rock and beats the animal away, and scrambles on top of the van. The barking of the dogs attracts a nearby herd of infected towards the van, which the dogs then attack. Unable to bring one down quickly enough, the dogs are overwhelmed by their numbers and devoured, while Nick remains hidden on top of the van. When the herd began to disperse, Nick overpowers an infected and takes his belt as a tourniquet. He covers himself in walker blood to hide his smell. Nick rests on top of the van and inspects his leg wound, which is deep. The herd hears him move and swarms the van. He closes his eyes and prays. A vehicle horn sounds in the distance and the herd flocks towards it. Seizing the opportunity, Nick crawls off the van and eats meat from one of the dog carcasses. He removes the belt from a maimed Infected and ties his injured leg with it.
Later that day, still covered in blood, he is walking among the herd along the road towards Tijuana, suffering from dehydration. He hallucinated that the zombies were talking to him and that an infected Gloria was walking with him. While in this state, the gang that chased him the day before turn up again and start shooting the zombies. One of the outlaws recognizes Nick within the throng. Spooked by Nick's glare, he freezes and struggles to reload. The herd devours the outlaw and one of his accomplices and the lone survivor drives off.
Later, Nick collapses and is spotted by Luciana and Francisco, but is left lying on the road. Eventually, Nick falls to the ground, dehydrated and exhausted. Francisco insists on saving him but Luciana refuses. He tells her that Nick is dying, and she changes her mind. Nick lays dying on the asphalt, barely conscious. In a flashback, he shoots heroin with Gloria in the shooting gallery at the Los Angeles church, the day before he encountered her undead body. Back in the present, rain begins to fall, reviving Nick who does his best to drink the rain.
The next day, he hobbles into a town and finds a drug store. He looks for medication to treat his festering wound but finds nothing. In a barber shop, Nick wraps his wound with duct tape. Luciana and Francisco approach him and asks if he's infected. Nick assures them it's just a dog bite. They give him water to drink and Luciana invites him to come with them.
A pharmacist named Alejandro treats Nick's wound in an infirmary, remarking that Nick is foolish to walk with the dead, despite his reasoning that it is safe. He invites Nick outside and he finds himself in the Colonia, a walled survivor community. The streets are alive with bustling store stalls, people going about their business, and laughing children.
Nick wakes up in an infirmary in Colonia. He wanders through the town and sees a young girl crying. In a nearby field, the girl’s father stands surrounded by neighbors from the Colonia. “Ready?” asks Alejandro, who is the community’s leader. The father hands his knife over and enters a bus. Through the bus he passes into a gated field, filled with Infected. He sacrifices himself to the herd as the people look on.
In Colonia, Nick sees Alejandro inject an elderly man with medication. Alejandro confers with Luciana. They look at Nick. He cleans bloody bandages at a faucet. Luciana enlists Nick to help her in a mission. She brings him to the field of Infected and pins an Infected to the wall. She slits its throat and slathers herself in the Infected’s blood. Nick follows suit. Nick and Luciana walk down a Tijuana street. Nick asks Luciana about the man who sacrificed himself to the Infected. Luciana says that the dying sacrifice themselves to the Dead and that once the Dead are gone, the world will be renewed. Nick questions whether Alejandro was actually bitten, since he hadn’t turned. Luciana says she saw it happen.
Nick and Luciana arrive at a supermarket guarded by local gangsters. Luciana gives the leader, Marco, a bag of medication. In return, she receives a shopping cart. She says the deal was for two carts but Marco says it’s now only one. Nick and Luciana enter the supermarket to shop for supplies. At the supermarket, Nick puts a candy bar into the cart. Luciana puts it back and tells him to take only what’s essential. Nick sees a large group of dazed junkies camped out in the supermarket. Marco kneels next to one of the junkie women, his sister. Nick and Luciana leave the market with a full shopping cart. As they walk away, one of the gangsters charges and tackles Nick, revealing a pastry stowed in his pants. Marco comes after Nick with a machete and gets ready to chop off Nick’s hand. Through Luciana’s translation, Nick threatens to stop supplying Oxy for the junkies, including Marco’s sister, if they don’t let him go. In addition, he demands a second shopping cart. Marco begrudgingly agrees.
Nick and Luciana wheel two carts of supplies back to Colonia. Luciana worries the gang will follow them back and yells at Nick for upsetting the gangsters. Returning to Colonia, Nick and Luciana drop the supplies off at the pantry. Nick gives the candy bar to the young girl whose father was sacrificed. Luciana ushers him inside a house to meet Alejandro. Nick is reprimanded for riling up the gangsters. He goes on to explain the importance of faith, saying only the faithful will remain once the world has been washed clean of death. “We have been chosen. We will outlast death,” he says. Nick notices a scar on Alejandro’s shoulder, the bite Luciana spoke of.
Alejandro preaches to his people in the Colonia church. Nick stands in the audience.“From death we come, and to death we deliver ourselves,” the congregation repeats. Call and response. Nick joins them.
Nick roams the crowded street. He sees a young girl crying, and then explores the infirmary a little further. Going upstairs, he finds Alejandro. Nick apologizes for his mistake at the grocery store, and Alejendro tells him he compromised the entire compound. While helping Alejandro with medicine, Nick tells a story of his friend from before the infection. Nick declares he wants to make things right, that he knows how to use medicine. A montage with heavy music shows Nick pounding away at controlled substances. He creates a pill with the procedure and presents it to Alejandro. The pills will give them a shot at a deal. Nick is still curious, and asks about Alejandro's bite. He reveals he knows about the bite, and shows his doubt about the story. Alejandro asks Nick to take a leap of faith in believing him, but Nick admits he has trouble with that.
Alejandro knows Nick likes being out in the danger, but he wants him to be careful. he claims he wants Nick to come back, Nick appreciates the belief in him. As they look over, Luciana is playing soccer with some children. Nick goes over to join them and Alejandro watches. Nick clearly knows what he's doing, and scores a goal right away. Luciana shares a flirtatious smile with him.
A man covered in blood approaches and Luciana calls him Echo. He says he found Pablo, but that he was in pieces. Luciana tries to watch the conversation, but is at a distance. She goes over to investigate as the children surround Nick. After the break, Nick and Luciana are walking away from La Colonia. He tells her she didn't have to come, but she says he doesn't know Spanish. Luciana reveals Pablo was her brother, and she goes on to talk about their story after the infection. Her father was gone before it started and their mother lost contact. Nick embraces Luciana and apologizes, and they share another moment.
Alejandro notes that Nick was respectful to the gang. Nick admits he was more friendly than he wanted to be. They both note surviving sucks. Alejandro rewards Nick's hard work with giving him his own house. Nick claims he doesn't need all this, but Alejandro insists that he has helped the community more than he realizes. Nick humbly accepts the gift. Later, Nick is alone his house when there is a knock on his door. After he responds, there is no answer. He gets up and Luciana is at the door. She claims she is too tired to sleep, and he lets her in. She discovers Nick is studying Spanish, and he practices with her.
They both sit on the bed and talk about Nick's self-conscious image. Nick reveals he has a sister, and that is a surprise to Luciana. She says it is hard to imagine him with a family. Nick says he thinks she and his mother are alive, and tells her his father died before the infection. He tells her that he lost his father relating that, “We’ve all lost someone.” Music plays, and Luciana wakes up in Nick;s bed. He is on the floor and insists she stay and sleep. She said no, that people would look down on it. As she's about to leave, Nick asks if she is testing him. Without answering, she walks up and kisses him. The begin to kiss more aggressively and move off-screen.
Reynaldo stops by Nick's trailer to inform Luciana that Francisco and his family snuck out of La Colonia. Reynaldo refuses to make the upcoming Oxy trade without Francisco. Nick volunteers himself and Luciana to make the trade so that the community can have water.
Alejandro approaches Nick and Luciana. He asks what happened and they tell him about Francisco. Luciana insists that the community needs to hear from Alejandro and he says bittery, "No thank you, no goodbye,". He asks Luciana to speak with the scouts to boost morale in the wake of Francisco's departure. Alejandro addresses his people at the church and urges them to keep their faith in him and in the safety of their home. Afterwards, he questions Luciana's loyalty for neglecting to speak with the scouts immediately. He forbids her and Nick from doing the drug trade, despite Nick's fears that Marco will come for them if he doesn't receive his Oxy.
In Nick's trailer, Luciana worries about Alejandro's mental state. Nick insists they deliver the Oxy. Luciana refuses and insists that Alejandro knows what he is doing. The two argue which concludes in Nick saying he is only here for her and Luciana declaring she is the boss now before sharing a kiss.
Nick goes to Alejandro's home alone. He asks if he is okay. Alejandro reveals a bit of regret for doubting Luciana. Nick insists that the gangsters will come for them if they don't make a trade. Alejandro insists this is not Nick's place but Nick claims to believe in this community and wants what is best for it. Alejandro starts to accuses Nick of lacking faith in him. He hands Nick a water bottle and dismiss him.
Nick talks with Reynaldo in the community and asks if he would make the drop with him instead of Antonio. He wants to follow Alejandro's orders but Nick realizes that more people in their group will die. Reynaldo agrees to accompany Nick that night. Nick walks over to Luciana, who was just finishing her talk with the scouts. They leave and she explains what she said to them: the community needs their strength. She notices a look on Nick's face. He lies and insists nothing is wrong. They joke about Nick lying in Spanish, which he is, because he's not telling her about making the drop. The two go inside for a drink of water. Nick mentally prepares himself for the drop. He sees Marco looking at him with a pair of binoculars.
In the middle of the night, Nick sneaks out of bed with Luciana and meets Reynaldo. They skulk into the infirmary and steal OxyContin. At daylight, they pass through the bus out of La Colonia to deliver the drugs to Marco. Nick and Reynaldo arrive at El Pelícano and tell Antonio that they need to speak with Marco. Nick gives Marco the OxyContin, but Marco says he no longer has a need for their supply. He tells Nick that he has joined forces with a more powerful gang and plans to take over La Colonia. Nick asks what will happen to the residents, but Marco doesn't care. To prove it, Marco reveals the executed bodies of Francisco, his wife, and daughter. He advises Nick to leave La Colonia immediately if he wants to live.
Nick tells Luciana that Marco's gang is about to attack La Colonia and apologizes for sneaking away. At the infirmary, They brief Alejandro on Marco's impending assault. Nick urges Alejandro to vacate La Colonia immediately. The debate is interrupted by a patient who has turned. The infected attacks and, in the ensuing scuffle, Alejandro and two others are bitten. Nick kills the infected by pressing his fingers through the eyeballs, into the brain. Alejandro gapes at the bite on his arm, but he assures Nick and Luciana that he will be fine. The La Colonia townspeople say farewell as the infected infirmary victims offer themselves up to the herd in the yard. Nick tells Luciana he's worried about Alejandro. She assures him that Alejandro's faith will heal him.
Nick frantically packs his things. Alejandro walks in and Nick calls him out for being afraid of the bite. Alejandro doesn't want to reveal Nick's alleged truth but Nick says the only way Luciana leaves before Marco arrives is if Alejandro admits to lying. Alejandro tells her, "I am not immune." She feels his forehead and feels his fever. Alejandro tells her that he was bitten by a junkie, not a zombie. He lied to help build the community and protect himself and those in it. Nick pleads with Luciana to leave with him. Alejandro tries to convince Nick to stay but she feels betrayed and will leave with Nick. Alejandro leaves, saddened by the truth coming out and loss of trust. Nick holds Luciana and tells her, "We have to go," but she doesn't want to leave. She wants to stay back and fight for La Colonia because the faith they have has protected them. She's not leaving, saying La Colonia is her home.
Nick hustles after Luciana who is clearly planning something. She is distant from him. He wants her to come with him. She continues to refuse and mocks him and encourages him to run. Meanwhile, Nick leaves La Colonia. As he walks down a Tijuana road smeared with infected blood, he spots a helicopter landing in the near distance.
Nick returns to La Colonia and goes to Alejandro in his trailer. Nick says he saw a medevac helicopter land in a camp near the border. Alejandro cares about his people, he insists, and Nick tells him to let his people go, let him and Luciana run north. Alejandro brings up reasons not to let them leave but Nick tells him that the people will live, including Luciana, if he is brave enough to let them leave, as he injects medication into Alejandro's wrist. The drugs kick in and Alejandro fades out.
Nick and Luciana lead the villagers toward the U.S. border. The two and the Colonists arrive at the border crossing. A plume of smoke rises in the distance. Through binoculars, Nick sees the medevac helicopter leaving a refugee camp. An armed survivor suddenly pops up from behind an abandoned vehicle and shoots Luciana, then the entire armed group emerges and open fire onto the Colonists. Nick and Luciana hide behind a booth but are captured by one of the attackers. The armed men separate Nick and Luciana and shove them to the ground.
After being captured by a military group, Nick and Luciana are shown sitting together against a wall. Nick opens his eyes to see Travis, who is also help captive. Travis tells Nick that Madison and Alicia are also here and were taken elsewhere. Nick asks about Chris, to which Travis responds negatively, indicating Chris died. Luciana wakes up to ask if he saw anyone at the border before resting her head on Nick's shoulder again. Nick explains that he thought this place was a refugee camp but was wrong. Travis came looking for Nick and now he's going to get them all out of here.
In the holding area, Troy questions Travis about his ethnicity and then if he had communication with another country before it all went down. Nick questions Madison and Alicia's location and Troy insists he is not a savage. Travis tells Troy that Luciana is dying and requires immediate medical attention. Troy shrugs and declares that “everyone here dies", and orders Travis to sit. In the holding area, a man named Steven introduces himself to Travis and he says he can get them out. Soldiers suddenly come in and take Travis and Nick to shower area. They are in the midst of pushing one man against a wall as he struggles before shooting him. Nick and Luciana are scared but Travis is unaffected. Steven tells Travis they can escape the depot via sewer tunnels that lead to the border. Travis agrees to help. The bored soldiers amp up their sick game by shooting two victims at once. Nick is next in line.
Willy and his comrade bet on which corpse will turn first. Travis convinces them to shoot him next, instead of Nick, claiming that Maori don't turn. As they chain him up, he attacks Willy and throws the other soldier at a freshly turned Infected. Nick, Luciana, Travis and Steven escape in the chaos. Troy's men fire at them as they flee the barrack. The soldiers are gaining on them, so Travis tells Nick and Luciana to go on without him, and he stays behind. Steven leads Nick and Luciana to a sewer grate. Nick helps Luciana down, then follows behind her. Steven is shot up by the soldiers before he can descend. Willy slits Steven’s throat, and throws his body into the sewer, ensuring that he will turn and find Nick and Luciana. The two make their way through sewer tunnels. Luciana urges Nick to leave her so that he can go on unburdened. He refuses and tells Luciana he will never leave her behind. Nick kicks down another sewer grate only to find a horde of Infected on the other side. He and Luciana flee back inside the tunnel. The horde follows. In the sewage system, Nick is attacked by the now reanimated Steven. Alicia hears it from above and tries to help. She drops her knife to them and Luciana takes the zombie out. Alicia is grabbed by soldiers as Nick looks on.
Alicia is brought to Madison. Moments later, soldiers bring Nick back and the three Clark's share a hug. Jake offers to take Nick, Luciana, Travis, Madison and Alicia to his family’s ranch. It’s safe there, and Jake assures them that Troy will behave. Madison and Travis reject the offer. Later they hear gunshots nearby. The infected Nick and Luciana encountered have emerged from the sewer and breached the barracks. The soldiers scramble to keep them back. The compound has been compromised, and chaos ensues.
Madison and Nick fight the infected, while Travis and Alicia help Luciana into a helicopter. Troy arrives in a truck and urges Madison and Nick to hop on board. The helicopter takes off with Travis, Alicia, and Luciana while Madison and Nick depart in a truck with Troy. He tells Madison that they’re all going to the same destination.
The next day, Troy blasts heavy metal music as he drives Nick and Madison to his father’s ranch. Madison keeps her guard up, still leery of Troy and his motives. Eventually the caravan pulls up to Broke Jaw Ranch. A guard tells Troy that Jake never arrived. Troy orders Madison and Nick to get out of the truck. He drives inside the gate, leaving Madison and Nick outside looking in. Nick suggests they backtrack and find the rest of their group, but Madison insists they stay put in case the helicopter arrives. She reveals to Nick that she stole a gun off the truck and tells him they can protect themselves if they have to. Nick and debate whether or not they should stay here. Nick wants to leave in a hurry. After Nick walks away, Troy’s father, Jeremiah Otto, introduces himself to Madison and Nick and orders the guard to let them in. He welcomes them to Broke Jaw Ranch. Nick is reluctant to enter, insisting it is not safe.
Jeremiah brings Madison and Nick to their bunkhouse and leaves them with a key. Nick grumbles about Madison being nice to Jeremiah after his son tried to kill them. Madison admits that she doesn’t have a plan yet, but they should play nice while they bide their time. At the ranch, a guard spots Alicia and Jake carying Luciana. Nick and Madison rush into the gate where Alicia hugs Madison. She asks where Travis is and Alicia has to tell her that he didn't make it. Both of them break down. Nick finds Luciana and tries to wake her up. Troy is quick to say that Luciana won't make it and wants to put her down. He orders Nick to move aside, so he does, but then offers to do it himself. Nick gets the gun and stares down at Luciana before pointing it at Troy. Everyone draws their guns on him. Nick orders Luciana be allowed inside. Jeremiah steps between the two men. He agrees to treat Luciana in the infirmary if Nick hands back the gun and provided she has a pulse. Nick complies and Luciana is taken to the infirmary. Nick stands by Luciana’s side in the infirmary. He checks in with Alicia and holds her as she weeps over Travis’ death.
Nick, Madison and Alicia attend Charlene’s memorial at the ranch. Sensing hostility from members of the community, Madison introduces herself to the ranchers and thanks them for taking her family in. Nick takes care of Luciana at the infirmary. Luciana insists they leave the ranch as soon as she’s feeling better. Nick tells her he just wants them to feel safe in one place and he had a chance to kill Troy but didn't. Luciana insists that wouldn't have made them safe and says Nick is not a killer. In the bunkhouse, Madison assures Nick and Alicia that they can win over the minority of people who don’t want them at the ranch. Nick wants to confront Troy or at least do something. Alicia questions what he can or will do. Nick wants to start over somewhere else, like a house somewhere that they can grow crops. Madison refuses and insists there is no place better and tells him, "We hauled you out of that hell hole and Travis died because of it." Nick insists Luciana won't be safe here and they might make her go but Madison offers no sympathy.
Nick and Alicia watch horses trotting around. Alicia is reflecting on how their father used to take her to the equestrian center. Nick asks Alicia if she wants to stay at the ranch. She doesn't want to stay but realizes there aren't other choices. Nick is feeling the guilt of Travis' death and notices the change in Alicia but she walks away. Nick stands out by himself during the night when Troy approaches him in a truck. Troy is out hunting and invites Nick along. He offers Nick a gun which is enough to convince him and climbs into Troy’s truck. Outside the Ranch, Troy sneaks up on Nick but Nick gets the jump on him. Troy encourages him to shoot him. Nick has the gun pressed to his neck. Troy asks him to time how long it takes to reanimate. He wants to know "why we spoiled" but Nick insists, "You are not a scientist." Nick stands up and points the gun at him, ultimately shooting the ground, instead. He tears up the pages of Troy's book, laughing the whole time. Troy wrestles him for it and declares, "I think we can be friends now."
Nick, Luciana and Madison wake up to some startling noise. They rush to investigate and find the burning house. Nick joins the ranchers as they fight to put out the fire. Jeremiah orders everyone to stop so they can save the water since Russell and Martha are already gone. "Save the water, let it burn," he said. Nick and Alicia try to dissuade Madison from joining Troy on his mission to find the missing team that went to investigate the downed chopper. They tell her there are other ways to contribute. Madison ignores their advice and leaves with Troy.
Nick delivers food to Luciana. She is still unhappy to be here. He is still thinking about the fire. Luciana thinks it is beautiful how they were together to the end. She wants to leave and claims Nick is afraid to leave his family. "I can't live here," she said. He hesitates, but relents and promises to leave with her once she's healthy enough to travel. Nick visits the ruins of Russell’s home and finds a photo of Russell and Martha. Nick is cleaning the burnt home while Jeremiah approaches him. Jeremiah says the community works together and insists Nick is a part of it now. This was his home. Jeremiah reflects on living here before the big house. Nick hands him the photograph he found and Jeremiah is very grateful. Jeremiah admires the craftsmanship of a gun. They have different views on beauty, apparently, like they do most things. Jeremiah gave this gun to Russell when he first moved into the house. They hung it on the wall. "Every home needs a gun," Jeremiah said. Nick is very suspicious of Jeremiah.
Nick sits with Jeremiah and continues to talk. He talks about lessons he learned from his father. He sees his Luciana. Nick questions how the living could be worse than the dead and people should stick together. Jeremiah tells a story about Troy throwing a fit and being locked away in the basement. Jeremiah and his wife were drunk, and forgot about Troy until the next morning. He wasn't angry, he only apologizes for Jeremiah's errors. Nick mentions that Luciana wants him to leave the ranch with her, but Madison wants him to stay. Jeremiah asks Nick what he wants for himself. Nick leads Luciana to a candlelit surprise. She looks happy. They lay together and watch the stars. Nick tells the story of how the two people met who lived in the community. He thinks this place can be great. Luciana does not buy into Nick’s fantasy. Nick wakes up to find Luciana gone, leaving nothing but a letter to him. Jeremiah joins Nick at Russell’s house and gives him the revolver. He says that if Nick finishes rebuilding the house he can live there. He consoles him over Luciana's departure with a pat on the shoulder.
Nick and Jeremiah have a little target practice on the edge of Broke Jaw Ranch. Jeremiah catches Nick's distraction and encourages him to stop worrying about Madison, prompting him to start shooting. Nick spots Troy's team hobbling toward the ranch on the road to the gate. He, Alicia and other ranchers rush out as Madison and Troy’s team arrive, who all have bloody feet from walking without shoes. Alicia and Nick give Madison water. Jeremiah requests a private debrief, but one of the ranchers, Vernon Trimbol, insists Troy's team share their findings with everyone. Mike Trimbol announces that a group of Native Americans slaughtered Phil McCarthy and the others from the outpost. Troy tries to keep everyone calm saying they can handle the situation but Mike cracks and blurts out that they're all going to die if they don't leave. Nick and Alicia take care of Madison's feet. She is in a lot of pain as they care for her. Nick reveals that Luciana went back south.
Then at night, Nick walks outside. There are fires lit all around the Broke Jaw Ranch. The community is scared and huddle together. Jeremiah looks on from his balcony. The next day, Nick heads into the basement where all of the supplies are. Troy cuts him off and asks about Luciana. Nick doesn't want him saying her name anymore. Two residents try to leave with supplies and Troy stops them, insisting they put the supplies back. They insist to have spoken with Jeremiah about it. Troy walks out, frustrated.
Nick enters Jeremiah's house to find him drunk moving furniture. Nick turns down a drink and request Jeremiah slow down the drinking. Nick asks what happened to his hand and he insists it distracts from the headaches. Nick encourages him to grab some sleep here. Jeremiah begins discussing how important this ranch is to him. He flips the table in anger. Nick goes to pick it up but Jeremiah brings his gun over and shoots three holes through it. Nick is startled and takes the gun from him. "I'm sorry," Jeremiah said. "Your home, your gun. There's blood in it. It's in the Earth." The next morning, Jeremiah finds Nick outside the house and Nick relieves him by saying he wasn't around last night, clearly playing along. Jeremiah sees a horse outside of the gate. It's Vernon's. He yells to Nick to go get his mother. Nick, Madison and Jeremiah leave the ranch on a pickup to search for Vernon's family on the road. Madison reasons that the horse may have escaped on its own but Jeremiah predicts that the Trimbol family is dead.
They exit their truck having found Vernon's RV. It's been shot and ravaged. There is a zombie slamming around inside. Jeremiah puts two down with two shots. Nick examines gun shot on the side of the RV. The zombies inside were Vernon and Kathy. Mike is dead behind the RV. Behind the RV, Gretchen and other walkers are eating a horse on the trailer. Madison freezes. Nick puts Gretchen down. Moments later, they have gathered the bodies. Madison is taken aback by the fact that Gretchen is Alicia's age. Nick and Jeremiah think Troy killed the family in an effort to scare everyone. Jeremiah tries to believe Troy couldn't do this. Madison insists everyone turn around and go back, so they do. The three of them return to the ranch with the bodies. Madison speaks to the crowd that's gathered to see hem return and covers for Troy; she declares that the people who killed Travis and Phil have now killed the Trimbols. Nick doesn't buy it. She warns that anyone who leaves the ranch will die and urges them to stay together. The crowd murmurs in support. Nick sits and watches people return supplies to the basement and Nick confronts Madison about lying to the ranch. Madison points out that even if Troy killed the Trimbols, no one would believe them. Nick agrees to keep Madison’s secret as long as she includes him on her plans.
Nick is informed by Madison that Alicia is missing. Jeremiah remarks that Jake, too, is gone. Nick wants to look for them but Jeremiah insists they can't spare people to look for them. Nick doesn't want to sit around like Jeremiah, which prompts Jeremiah to suggest Nick joining Troy's army.
Nick tries to train with Troy but he questions whether or not his mother gave him permission, belittling Nick's efforts. Nick is carrying the guilt of Travis' death and his sister missing, going on to say he needs an occupation. He also wants to protect the community from whoever killed the Trimbol's. Troy hands over a gun. Nick cuts his hair off. Madison looks on. "Do I have to worry?" she asks. Nick is trying to fit the mold of a soldier, and tells Madison he’s keeping his enemies close, referring to Troy.
Later, Jake arrives at Broke Jaw Ranch with Ofelia. Madison yells at Jake for leaving Alicia with Walker. Jake explains the hostage trade situation. Jake promises she is safe. Nick and Ofelia share a stare at one another before Nick heads inside. Nick, Troy and several militia soldiers sneak into Black Hat headquarters and rescue Alicia. Troy grabs Alicia and silences her. The small group is trying to get her out of there. Nick is watching from the distance and sees someone coming. He rushes in, instructing Madison to meet them down there with the truck. Nick attacks the man out of nowhere but ends up on the bottom of the fight with a knife in his face. Troy saves Nick's life by shooting the man in the head. Gunfire breaks out. Madison picks up the rescue team with Alicia in a truck. Madison’s group returns to the ranch. Jake admonishes them for essentially declaring war on Walker’s nation. Madison admits that she convinced Troy to help save Alicia and accuses Jake of getting played by Walker.
Troy tells his soldiers that none of them will sleep for the next 48 hours. Nick questions what happens if Walker attacks while they are on the perimeter. In this case, someone will have to stay behind and fight them off until they die to allow the rest to get back to protect it. Nick volunteers and calls himself "suicide proof."
Nick rushes to the community to see people panicking. There are walkers roaming about and eating people. Nick, Madison and Alicia start fighting the dead with guns of their own. Ofelia emerges from the house and looks on. Nick calls for her but she goes off on her own. Nick calls for everyone to stop her as she rushes off but suddenly becomes sick. Nick falls to the ground in pain and realizes that Ofelia is responsible for the illness. Madison chases after Ofelia.
The next day, Alicia and Jake help manage the infirmary and tend to the sick, which includes Nick. Jeremiah enters and sees someone reanimating beside Nick. He puts him down with his gun. Everyone looks on. Madison reveals that Ofelia put powder in the coffee. Madison orders Jake to give Nick antibiotics. Nick wakes up, spewing more fluids from his mouth. Madison enters to tell Jake that it's anthrax. Troy is happy to know what they're doing with. Madison tries to help Troy's plans and Jake cuts her off, "You don't lead this ranch!" They storm out and Madison stays behind to talk with Nick. Afterwords, Jake talks to Nick, who wants off of his bed and notices Jake is sick. He convinces Jake to uncuff him from his cot, assuring Jake that he won’t turn. Nick wants to talk with Jeremiah but Jake insists Jeremiah will only disappoint him, blaming him for the whole situation.
While watching Jeremiah and others bury the dead in a mass grave, Nick has a plan of his own. He rips up the floorboards in his house. Nick digs a hole underneath the adobe floor. His shovel hits something hard. Nick goes to Jeremiah’s house and confronts him with a skull that he found under the adobe. Jeremiah confesses that as the rivalry between the ranchers and the Black Hat escalated, the founding fathers, Him, Phil, Russell and Vernon of the ranch murdered three Hopi tribesmen, including Walker’s uncle. He says the skull belongs to Walker’s father, who Jeremiah killed when the man started to investigate his brother’s disappearance.
Moments later, Nick tells Alicia and Madison about Jeremiah's previous deeds. Alicia insists they're on the wrong side. Nick doesn't want to cross any lines like Jeremiah does. He reveals Troy's lie of killing the Trimbol's to Alicia. Upset about learning what her family lied about and about Troy murdering her friend Gretchen, she yells at Madison, "You're just like them! You're worse, you're heartless! No wonder dad was so depressed, he was living with a goddamn corpse!" Madison angrly declares that she’s too busy keeping everyone alive to have time for feelings and insists Alicia has no idea what she carries. In the bunkhouse, Madison reveals to Nick and Alicia why she’s never taken them to her hometown in Alabama. Madison shot her alcoholic father when she was a child because he beat her mother. She resolutely insists she would do it again if it meant protecting her family.
Madison goes to Jeremiah’s house and tells him that Walker is willing to offer peace in exchange for Jeremiah’s scalp. She puts her gun on his desk and urges him to kill himself. Jeremiah refuses. Nick enters the room and Jeremiah mocks him and says his mom is "exactly like" and doesn't finish the sentence before Nick shoots him in the head. Madison quickly begins to put a plan into action. Jake and Troy run to Jeremiah’s house to find him dead, staged to look like a suicide by Madison and Nick. They remove Jeremiah’s body from the house.
Nick, Madison and Alicia stand on the ranch's balcony where Jeremiah used to overlook the community. They watch Jake and Troy deliver Jeremiah's body to a coffin.
Nick, Troy and the militia lure Infected into an ambush. Nick kills an Infected and gazes toward the border, thinking of Luciana. Nick orders Troy to burn the body in order to prevent it from ruining the soil. The militia returns to their ATVs and discusses the influx of Infected. Nick suggests they mend the fences. Nick and Troy spot Walker’s convoy as it approaches the ranch. Jake greets the convoy and shakes Walker’s hand. Troy and Nick look on, as does Ofelia from the other side. The ranchers warily look on as Walker waves the convoy through the gate: The Nation has officially come to live at Broke Jaw Ranch.
Nick is there when Jake leads Walker into the pantry to discuss details of the Nation residing at the ranch. Troy walks out after voicing his disdain for the Nation and butting heads with Crazy Dog. Jake assures Walker that, unlike Troy, most ranchers have accepted the peace deal. Nick joins Troy at Jeremiah’s grave and says that he, too, lost an alcoholic father to what was probably suicide. Nick tries to give Jeremiah a heroic legacy but Troy calls him a drunk. Troy blames his father for killing himself and leaving them with a mess.
At night, Nick visits Ofelia in the adobe. "I killed people, Nick," she said. "Glad you survived." Nick asks if she feels guilt. She admits to not feeling particularly guilty about killing ranchers with anthrax. She asks Nick if he feels any guilt for what he’s done. Nick doesn't understand why he should feel guilty at first. "We're not so different, you and I, Nick." Later, Terrence pulls a gun on Crazy Dog, but it is pushed away and he misses his shot. A stray bullet hits a member of the nation. Nick tries to help him, but is pushed back. Crazy Dog locks Terrence in a choke hold and nearly chokes him to death, but releases his victim when Walker steps in. In the infirmary, Terrence is suffocated as his esophagus has been broken. Moments later, Madison and Nick discuss how important it is to keep Jeremiah's murder a secret. Nick tells Madison that he can handle Troy, but Madison worries that Troy will kill Nick if he finds out that Nick killed Jeremiah. Nick is not sure what reaction he will have.
Madison, Nick and Walker go to Otto’s house to collect weapons from Troy. Troy is curious about his own safety. Nick helps convince him by saying, "You don't want to die on your doorstep." Troy allows everyone inside. He sits in his father's chair and discusses his father dying in it. When Walker heads upstairs to check the house, Troy grabs a gun from Otto’s desk ordering everyone out. Nick stands in the way of Troy who fires a warning shot into the ceiling. Everyone clears out. Nick stays behind with Troy. Inside, Nick questions what Troy is doing. Troy reveals a cache of weapons. He wants to go upstairs and start sniping the enemies. Nick tries to talk him down but Troy's mind is made up. He hands Nick a rifle and heads to the window. He sees Madison first, who tells him everyone handed over their weapons so no one will follow him. He does not want to surrender but Madison wants to survive. Gunfire bursts out and Walker's men begin shooting at Troy. Nick and Troy run for cover.
Troy takes out some of Walker's men. Inside, Crazy gets the drop on Nick, but Troy saves his life and gets a knife through the hand in the process. Heading upstairs, he continues to gun the men down. Troy closes the door behind him. "If I can make a fist, I can fire a gun! If I can fire a gun, I can kill," Troy insists. He reloads his rifle and positions himself by the door. Troy thanks Nick for his support. The gunfight continues at the Ranch. Nick tells Troy he doesn't wanna die, Troy tells him he backed the wrong horse. Troy insists they're at the point of no return. He insists he is taking some back. Nick attacks Troy and starts yelling out, "We surrender!" The two fight in the room until Troy gets his rifle again. The men are about to enter the room. Nick starts telling Troy the truth about Jeremiah, saying he was going to let everyone die. "He didn't kill himself," Nick said. "I killed him." Troy is stunned and aims his gun at Nick, but decides not to shoot. He's broken by the news about his father. Walker’s men barge into the room.
The next day, Madison and Walker discuss punishments for Troy. Madison worries that killing Troy would only turn him into a martyr, so they agree to exile him. Walker also calls for Nick to be punished as well, for his support of Troy. Madison forbids Walker from killing Nick or exiling him. Troy is put in the bed of truck with his hands tied and given one bullet, in the event he decides he wants to kill himself. Meanwhile, Nick is escorted to a hot box where Walker promises he will suffer. The truck drives off with Troy, now with a bag over his head.
Nick awakens in his hot box and sees Troy approaching. He looks like a walker but rolls toward him and jokes with him. He gets close and starts talking to him about how hard it is to be in this box. They discuss Jeremiah's death again and Nick insists he saved Troy. He asks him to open the door and after toying with him he pulls out a key. "I owe you," he said. Troy finally opens the door. He kneels down and offers his hand to Nick. Nick reaches forward but realizes it was an hallucination. He is still locked in the box.
Madison goes to Nick's box and gives him water. She drops the bottle inside. Nick is unresponsive. She doesn't want to leave in search of water with Walker until she knows Nick is okay. She walks to the truck and leaves with Walker. Later, Crazy Dog frees Nick from the box and offers him water. Nick drinks it. His hands are tied together. He eventually falls down to the ground but is ordered to sit up to be cut free. Alicia rushes over to him and helps him back inside. Nick starts chugging water and Alicia orders him to slow down, informing him of the water rations. She puts salt on the table and tells him to put it in the water.
At night Nick is approached by Cooper, Blake and Gabe, He gets the drop on one and holds a knife to him. They're not here to hurt him, though. They came to thank him for what he did with Troy and tell him how much their fight against Walker meant. They are ready to fight Walker's group. Nick tries to stall and suggests keeping a low profile. They give Nick the last rancher-controlled gun and want to rebuild the militia to fight back. They want to talk more tomorrow. Ranchers and Nation members line up at the well to collect their rations. Ofelia and Crazy Dog oversee the rationing. Blake tells Nick that he saw one of the Nation women double-dip at the well. At night, Blake and Cooper gather ranchers to form a new militia. Nick warns them against attacking the Nation prematurely and suggests waiting as to avoid ending up like Troy, but suggests they take action if the Nation pushes any further.
Nick goes to his room with Alicia confronting and admonishes Nick for harboring a gun. Nick points out that ranchers are listening to him. Alicia says they only trust him because they don’t know that he killed Otto. She accuses Nick of killing Otto for Madison. "I didn't do it for her," Nick said. She questions the statement. Nick tells her they are alive. "We keep trying to make her love us," Alicia said. "She's broken." Later, Nick has fallen asleep and Alicia is on the radio searching for her mother. There is no answer. The next day, Alicia catches a woman doubling up on water and insists she put it back. A fight almost breaks out but Alicia order everyone listen. "We only have six weeks of water left! If we don't work together we will run out and we will die! It is that simple, so, please stop," Alicia yelled out. Chaos follows as people fight over the water.
Crazy Dog fires his gun in the air and orders everyone back away from the well. They will take it to make sure everyone gets what they need. Nick stands in the man's way. Ofelia is ready to take the well, too. Nick, however, draws his gun. Ofelia is shocked. Nick sits on the well with his gun and the Ranch's original residents form beside him in support. Ofelia orders her man to stand down for now. "I'll keep the peace," he said. "Not at all costs. Got that?" The Nation walks away together. Moments later, people are trying to take all the water they can and prepare themselves. Nick gets the cold shoulder from the militia. He sees Alicia standing guard at the top of the Ranch with binoculars and her radio.
Nick stands in a house with the militia. They're preparing spears and knives. The militia discusses strategies to overtake the Nation. He tells them they are outmatched and to fortify would be a waste of energy. Nick suggests they avoid bloodshed by simply disarming the Nation. Nick and the militia sneak up to the adobe with guns. They see Alicia digging a new well with the Nation. Coop tells Nick to remove her from harm’s way.
Inside the adobe, Ofelia, Crazy Dog and Klah lie in wait for the militia, ready to counterattack. She wants to try and talk with them but the men of the Nation says it is time to start shooting. Nick gives his gun to Blake and joins Alicia. Crazy Dog and Ofelia leave their weapons behind and go outside. Nick, Alicia, Ofelia, Crazy Dog and other ranchers and Nation members all join together to dig.
Back near the Ranch, Nick watches men dispatch infected headed their way. Nick rules the dead are drawn by the cattle but a man from the Nation determines they'll die soon from lack of water. Nick walks over and shoots a cow in the head to keep the dead away.
Nick and Alicia stand on the Ranch's balcony talking. She lights cigarette with him. Nick is feeling guilt for killing Jeremiah and is now staying in his house. Nick admits he is worried about their mom and he is also worried about Troy. She says he doesn’t owe Troy, but she likes him and is self-destructive like he is.
Later that night, Nick is in bed. He gets up and makes sure the knife is still by his bed. He hears a noise outside and goes to the door. He lights a cigarette and turns to find Troy standing there. Troy says smoking will kill him. Nick says he shouldn’t be there but there he is. Troy says he can’t sit down because he’ll pass out and he can’t pass out because he’s on a mission. He says Nick saved him in his own way so now he’s here to help Nick. Troy says a reckoning is at hand, something good. He says it’s so big it’s “biblical.” Nick tells him he should leave or Nick can hide him for a few days, but Troy locks himself inside and demands that Nick listen to him. He warns Nick that in a matter of hours the Ranch will be obliterated in a few hours and he wants Jake to see it. Troy goes inside and Nick follows him.
The next day, Nick shows up at Jake's house and tells him and Alicia that Troy was here last night and warns them about something coming to the ranch. Jake thinks he knows where his brother would be, at the outpost, and Alicia says Troy is baiting both of them. Jake says he has to face him. She tries to tell Nick not to go but he feels he has a sense of duty to go, and he also has to watch over her boyfriend. She insists that Jake take a walkie talkie and tells him that he’s “the last good man” she knows. Nick and Jake drive off.
While on the road, Jake reaches into the glove compartment and pulls out a gun. Nick tells him that Troy could have killed him, but quickly realizes he can’t explain that one. He backpedals and says that Troy was there as a warning, not to hurt them. Jake tells the story of when he was 12 he went to hunt the coyotes that were attacking the herd. He found a rabbit that had been skinned alive and staked into the ground. He says he put it down because that’s what you do. To something that is lame or sick. He knows Troy will never get better. He warned him about this. Nick looks away and sees dust in the distance. He drops an F-bomb.
In the distance there is a huge herd of Infected that are heading straight for the Ranch. Nick radioes back to Alicia. He tells her a horde of Infected are coming towards them. Jake says they won’t be able to stop them if they head right, so Nick suggests they use the truck to lead them left. Down the hill they spot Troy, who is looking out over the mess. Troy sees them and they realize he could derail their plans.
Nick and Jake run up to Troy, who is wearing ammo around his neck with his rifle at the ready. Nick wants to talk to him but Jake says he’s too far gone and there’s no coming back from this. Jake relents and Nick approaches him. Troy says this is “a cleansing” and Nick says he is messed up in the head. Troy admits that he is a bit fuzzy. He has been leading the Infected for two days now, starting and stopping them with constant stimuli. Jake begs him not to do it but Troy enjoys the sound they make. He compares it to hearing a baseball being smacked out of the park, and he asks if Nick was ever into organized sports. Jake was all of that, he says. Jake did everything right. Troy points at the Infected and says this is evolution. Darwinian. Nick calls it murder, and Troy repeats the word. He asks if Nick really wants to “go there.” The Infected will clear out the Ranch and Troy thinks it’s a good thing. Jake threatens to kill him but Troy knows better. He fires the gun and Jake attacks him, pinning him down.
Nick tells Jake not to kill his brother because he’ll never live it down. He mentions the rabbit screaming, and Nick tries to reason with him. He says he’ll never be able to live it down, which leads Troy to wonder if Nick is having trouble dealing with his own conscience. Jake wants to know what he’s talking about and Troy tells Nick to tell Jake the story. Jake slowly realizes what Nick did and though Troy tries to instigate the situation, Jake says he doesn’t care that Nick killed their father and that Alicia might have known. Jake says none of it matters and aims the gun at Troy. Nick uses the rifle to knock Jake out of the way, sending him rolling down the hill toward the Infected.
As Nick and Troy run after Jake, one of the Infected lands on Jake and bites his arm. Nick pulls him off and asks Troy how long his brother has before the infection takes him. Troy says he doesn’t know but Nick doesn’t believe him. Jake tells Nick to cut his arm off. Nick tells Troy to stretch out his brother’s arm and though he initially hesitates, he eventually pulls his arm out and Nick chops it off. Jake screams in agony.
The truck speeds along down the path. Nick drives while Troy holds his brother in the back. He tells Troy to keep pressure on the arm until they make it back, but Troy is convinced that the Ranch is gone. In the distance, Nick is close enough to see the invasion through binoculars.
Nick goes back to the truck. Troy has Jake on the ground and he doesn’t look good. He died from his wound. Troy says his brother wasn’t supposed to die. He looks stricken. His brother was “the one who wasn’t supposed to die.” Nick tells Troy that he needs to put him down. Troy had wanted his brother to see what he did. Nick drags him to the edge and shows him the attack on the Ranch, telling him that’s all on him. He radios Alicia but she doesn’t answer. Troy tells him to do what his brother should have done and kill him. Nick kicks a gun at him and tells him to kill himself.
Nick looks back at Troy. Jake has started to turn and Nick tells him to do it. Troy holds his brother’s head down and builds up the gumption to kill him. Troy eventually runs his knife though his brother’s ear. Nick watches him. Troy says he needs some sleep. Nick says they need to find a way to save everyone Troy tried to kill, and tells him he can sleep when he's dead. From there, Broke Jaw Ranch is overrun.
Outside, Troy digs with his hands to bury his brother. Nick tells him there’s no time, and Troy says Jake was better than they are. Nick tells him that he needs to stop and help save the ranch. Nick and Troy look out over the ranch. They try to come up with a plan. Troy thinks they should drive through the Infected and torch the fuel on the side of the ranch to distract them. They get in the truck and head toward the ranch.
Nick looks out as Troy is at the wheel. They’re going to blow the fuel up to create a scene. Nick fires a grenade to lure walkers away from their path to the fuel. He and Troy race toward the fuel reserve in their truck but crash into an RV, attracting walkers. They run to the chopper and get inside. Troy laughs maniacally as walkers surround the helicopter.
The Infected surround the helicopter and Troy tells Nick how to fire up the rotors. Troy says it’s a hell of a place to die but Nick says he isn’t dying there today. Troy offers Nick a gun to kill himself as walkers overrun the chopper. They’re interrupted by a loud blast. Then suddenly, Madison, Walker and Strand return to ranch and saves them.
Madison, Strand, Walker, Nick and Troy run in the pantry to rescue Alicia, Ofelia and Crazy Dog. They all escape from the ranch. Outside, Alicia naps in the truck. Madison, Strand and Nick look out and Madison says that it could have worked. Madison says they’re going to head to the dam next.
Alicia gets out of the truck and goes to the group. Madison goes up to her and hugs her. Alicia is numb. Nick hugs her, too, and kisses her. She asks Nick about Jake and he shakes his head. She wants to know how. Troy says he got bit and that he put him down. She stares at him and asks where the horde came from and Nick covers for Troy and says that Troy spotted the mass of walkers but was too late in warning them.
Alicia tells Madison that she wants to find a way to live for herself that doesn't involve running from place to place in fear. She reveals a plan to live alone in the cabin that Jake told her about. Alicia leaves in a truck. Nick tells Madison he will meet her at the dam after he follows Alicia to make sure she reaches her destination safely. Madison tells him to take Troy. Alicia drives across the plain. Nick and Troy follow her at a distance.
Nick and Troy catch up to Alicia in an abandoned building. Nick tells Alicia that her plan is crazy and tries to convince Alicia to rejoin the group, she says that she almost died while surrounded by people. She is confident, however, because Nick survived on his own. She thinks groups are no better than solo. Alicia knows that it’s Madison who is talking. She claims Nick is trying to atone for what happened before they came to the ranch, but she promises he doesn't owe anyone and deserves to carve what he can out of this life.
Nick and Alicia say goodbye to one another. Alicia promises Nick she won't die. He gives her the map and gives her a hug while Troy starts the car and they drive off to the outpost. Troy asks Nick why everyone seems to hate him. Nick says that’s old news, and the only reason he stayed at the ranch was that Travis was dead and Luciana was sick. Troy calls him out and says he stayed because Nick loves him. Troy tells Nick that they’re more alike than Nick thinks.
Nick shows up and wakes up Madison. Walker told him what happened to Ofelia. He explains that Alicia is happy and isn’t coming with them. Madison nods and says ok. Nick says Troy is at the bar, freaked out by all of the Mexicans. Madison says it's ok because they need people right now. She starts crying, and Nick hugs her and says it’s ok. She thanks him for being there. He says she needs fresh air and he’ll look after Ofelia. Madison gives him the knife and leaves, and then Nick takes a deep breath and goes to sit with her. He looks at her and sees the pills there. He opens the bag and and pops one in his mouth.
At the outpost cafeteria, Nick joins Troy at a table and orders tequila. Nick asks the waitress where they can find the slaughter yard. The waitress advises him to visit the Butcher, for more drugs. Nick pops another pill and downs the tequila. Troy joins him. Nick is in the middle of a drug induced haze as he and Troy make their way to the Butcher. Neither one is sober. Troy follows him but isn’t sure what to think of all of this. Nick and Troy enter the slaughter yard, which is functioning as a drug den. Inside the Matadero’s private area they go to the bar and the bartender welcomes his fellow Americans. He offers Nick a variety of drugs and Nick wants something more. Troy wants to leave, but Nick wants to go higher. He offers Nick a pure adrenaline gland for free. Nick downs it and he offers one to Troy, who realizes that they are all watching him. He downs it as Nick laughs.
Nick climbs the fence and Troy follows him. Nick tells him not to fight it. Troy spots a herd ahead and Nick gleefully kills an Infected and then smears it all over them, then he goes to face the herd. Troy watches as the Infected pass them by, and when he rejoins Nick, he tells Troy that he can’t go back to his mother. Troy hugs him as the Infected surround them without noticing them, to Troy’s amazement.
At the Bazar, Madison prepares to return to the dam. Nick informs her that he and Troy will stay at the outpost to secure a toehold for future trading. Knowing that Nick has ulterior motives for staying, she doesn't fight it and Madison simply tells him that he knows where to find her.
Nick slaughters Infected in the streets and collects their heads in a shopping cart. Nick sells the heads to El Matarife. Once inside, the butcher slices the faces off of the walkers and evaluates their brain stems. "The longer you wait, the greater the risk of infection," the butcher said. Nick questions why anyone would take such a risk and the man tells him these stems provide "a high worth dying for." Nick will continue harvesting if this man keeps paying him.
Inside the Bazar, Nick drinks at a bar as Troy approaches him and yanks him away. He tells Nick that the Proctors are planning to attack Gonzalez Dam and that Madison is in trouble. Troy and Nick arrive at the dam and they reveal to Madison, Lola and the others that the Proctors are going to attack the dam. Daniel reveals there are three entry ways. They come up with a plan to defend the dam which calls for C4 and teamwork.
Nick insists Madison leave the dam before the Proctors show up. She admonishes Nick for using drugs again. Later, Strand orders Nick to take his mother and leave. He is going to stay behind because he has "obligations" here. Nick calls him out for sweating and forces him to confess the truth. Strand reveals to him that he made a deal with Procter John to protect Nick, Alicia and Madison, but sold out Daniel and Lola. He'll have to open the doors for them but now that Daniel has found out people are going to be in danger. Strand asks Nick not to tell Daniel but to take his mother and go.
Elsewhere, Nick approaches Daniel. He interrogates Nick and demands to know how the horde found the ranch. Nick insists he and Troy tried to redirect the Infected after spotting them on the outskirts. Daniel senses Nick is lying and locks the door to the room. Daniel is thoroughly questioning Nick who is covering for Troy. Daniel believes Nick did not kill Ofelia, but insists someone lead the horde to the Ranch. "Don't force me," Daniel says before standing up and taking his coat off.
Daniel claims either Troy or Jake had to lead the herd to the Ranch. "It was Jake," Nick said. Daniel insists it way Troy. Daniel wants Nick to admit it so he can get justice for his daughter's death. However, Nick insists Troy would never destroy the Ranch. Daniel appears to believe Nick's lie and dismisses Nick to his mother. Nick leaves and Daniel sits alone with his thoughts.
Nick finds Madison and Troy and tells them that Strand sold out Daniel and Lola to the Proctors. She wants to warn them and is angered that Strand didn't come to her first, but Nick insists they leave now for several reasons, including Daniel wanting to kill Troy. When she asks why Daniel will kill Troy, he reveals to Madison that he lead the herd to the Ranch. Madison is furious and scolds him for getting Jake and everyone killed. Troy insists, though, that he had the right to do that. Madison bashes Troy's skull with a hammer, twice, sending him falling down a hill. Nick is shocked and walks out, Madison close behind him. Strand brings Madison and Nick to a remote room and promises to try and keep them safe. He takes the detonator, locks their door and leaves.
In the locked room, Nick criticizes Madison for killing Troy. He accuses her of secretly wishing he had died during the darker days of his addiction. Madison swears that she never wanted her son dead. Nick says she always lived in that world but now she can show her true colors. She insists she could never hurt him but he claims she can and will. Someone knocks on the door as gunfire erupts outside.
Strand checks in on Madison and Nick. Madison holds him at gunpoint but releases him when he reveals that Alicia is at the dam with John. He instructs Madison and Nick to change into worker uniforms so that he can sneak them out. He admits that he shot Daniel but didn’t kill him. Without other options, Madison and Nick reluctantly agrees to his plan. Nick puts on the uniform and tells Strand there's "hope" for him since he couldn't kill Lola.
Strand escorts Madison and Travis across the bridge with a gun pointed at them. He orders them to do as he says, eventually telling a proctor gang member he was ordered to dispose of these two himself. The escape is short-lived as Lola shows up and attacks the group and guns down several of John’s men. John shoots her dead and discovers Strand trying to smuggle Madison and Nick. Lola's ambush exposes Strand's lies as he and the group are taken captive.
They are all taken in the office, where Strand is beat up for lying to John about killing Daniel and Lola. Alicia reunites with Madison. One of John’s men recognizes Nick from the trading post and recalls that he was with another man. John turns his attention Nick. He asks where Troy is. Nick tells John that Madison killed him. He is surprised by this and asks Madison if she killed his friend, but she tells him, "He was more threat than friend,". Because of this, John decides to kill Nick, who he deems untrustworthy, and must therefore also kill Madison and Alicia, knowing they'll seek revenge for Nick's murder.
Nick, Madison, Strand and Alicia walk across the dam bridge together. Nick hugs Strand goodbye then gets in position for his execution. Strand tells John that the dam is rigged with explosives and reaches into his pocket to pull out the detonator, but comes up empty. Nick reveals that he took the detonator while hugging Strand.
Nick threatens to detonate the explosives unless John allows Madison, Alicia and Strand to escape. Alicia urges Nick to come with them, but John points out that Nick cannot leave the detonator’s range. Nick calls the negotiations his “suicide note.” John agrees to his conditions. Madison covers her face in disbelief and tells Nick not to do this, but Nick pleads with Madison to just go. Madison takes Alicia's hand and leaves. Nick sends Strand with them, as well, and tells John he won't survive this, either. Nick has tears streaming down his face as his family flees the dam to a boat.
John realizes that Nick cannot detonate the explosives until his family is out of range of the explosion. His men close in on Nick. As the Proctors close in on Nick, a shot rings out. Walker and Crazy Dog snipe at John’s men from a distance. John accuses Nick of bluffing and orders his men to kill Nick. Walker and Crazy Dog shoot more of his men. Daniel reaches the group and starts shooting. Nick flips the switch and detonates the explosives. The dam breaks apart as John and his men flee. As Nick stands his ground, Daniel reaches Nick. They teeter on the dam bridge as water fills the valley.
Nick will appear in this episode.

Nick and Madison have a rather interesting mother-son dynamic as survival has been top priority since even before the apocolapse. Nick's addiction to heroin has lead him to numerous trips to rehab in vein as he was shown to have a mental and physical dependancy on it from the very first episode of "Fear The Walking Dead". Because of his dangerous and life threatening habit, Madison has had to step in and be the antagonistic mother of sorts for the sake of his safety as she helped get him weened off of the medication so that he can survive more sufficiantly in the zombie apocalypse.
A staggering distance is more and more noticeable in Season Two as Madison feels the need to treat her nineteen-year-old son as a child because his heroin addiction as been his coping mechanism for so long that now he seemingly pursues danger in hopes of getting a rush.
Alicia and Nick seem to be awkward strangers in Season One, as they don't share many interactions that you would see many siblings have. This is more than likely due to the fact that Nick had distanced himself from his family in favor of his addiction. Despite this, he shows concern for Alicia in the only way that Nick can when he assumes that her boyfriend is turned by now and will kill her, so he tries to keep her away from him.
In Season Two, the duo become a bit closer since they're forced together on the Abigail for an extended amount of time. When he disappears frequently according to his own or even Strand's agenda, she becomes worried as a result. This is seen especially during the wreckage of Flight 462 being found, Nick blending into the group of walkers by trudging around clad in the blood of the dead.
Susan, refered to as "Aunt Su-Su" by Alicia and Nick previously, had babysat them both as their mother worked. She was a friendly neighbor to the Clarks and likely was seen as family to them due to how close they had seemed.
Nick and Travis have an awkward relationship as some kids may have when their parents date someone new. This is in part to Nick's belief of Travis trying to be a replacement to his late father. Travis refers to Madison and her children as family on multiple occasions, as does Madison when talking about Chris. Despite this acceptance in their eyes of a blended family, Nick and Alicia still refer to him as "Travis" rather than "Dad" or something to show that he is a fatherly figure to them. This doesn't seem to faze him, however as he demonstrates a fatherly nature towards them both and is more than willing to help Nick with his addiction. He even has somewhat of a say on authoritative actions over them, insisting they follow his orders and if they aren't being stubborn, they obey.
Liza was a trainee nurse who had taken it upon herself to give the citizens of the quarentined zone medical attention. Being in the loop about the Clark family due to still being in contact with her ex-husband Travis, she was aware of Nick's struggle with heroin. Knowing he was suffering from withdrawal, Liza ensured that Nick was able to seek medical examination from Exner. When the military took Mrs. Salazar as well as Nick for not being physically fit, Liza insisted on going as well and even volunteered to help back at the make-shift hospital. She constantly asked about his condition to ensure that he was alright for the sake of his parents and because of her naturally caring nature. Liza had made sure to try to find him when they were separated as the hoarde grew closer to the hospital, so she went to look for him. She ended up saving his life due to her timing on going to find him just as he was being cornered by zombies. Nick didn't show any clear signs of mourning after her death but the loss seemed to leave a dead air in the group overall due to her death being the mark of a new era in which family and friends alike must be put down at some point before they change into a zombie.
Calvin had a manipulative grip on Nick that he himself was blind to, likely because of the influence of drugs in his system and his overall nature. Calvin had been selling him drugs for a while and had Nick convinced that they were good friends of sorts. In reality, they had more of a consumer-seller relationship that could have possibly lead to Calvin killing Nick as he attempted to. Nick somehow struggled through this and came out victorious, having nothing but blood on the truck and a tear stained face to account for the death of who he thought was his friend.
Victor Strand had met Nick at the right place in the right time just to make an escape from the hospital and manage to gain a valuable asset as well. Nick sees himself as a useless drug addict as he likely assumes this due to how he has been treated over the years of his addiction. Victor, on the other hand happens to have claimed to his mother Madison that he saw the potential of Nick within five minutes of meeting him, drug withdrawal and all. This is due to Strand's interpretation of what Nick sees as important or necessary to live, including being fearless. Strand doesn't treat Nick as a child, and their respect is returned for each other in a way that it isn't between Nick and Madison. They both seem to have something obviously wrong with them by society's standards, Nick being an addict and Strand showing signs of being a sociopath, however it doesn't seem to bother either of them when in their company as they see survival as priority number one. Strand provides the confidence that had been stripped from Nick due to his circumstances and then Nick sometimes triggers a sense of humanity in Strand that is usually not seen.
Ofelia and Nick have a contrasting, yet complimentary dynamic as Nick has lead his life as a rebelious teenager doing all the wrong things and Ofelia being the gentle hearted child to Daniel and Griselda that seemingly hasn't strayed from the sidewalk too much to be considered a wreck or a danger to anyone. Nick shows common courtesy towards her by being concerned with her gunshot wound and offers some reasonable yet humorous advice as to how to help bandaging it, "putting ointment directly onto the gauze before putting it on the wound helps make it feel better. Then put ice on for the pain. Vodka helps too... Lots and lots of vodka."
Nick and Gloria found a blossoming romance in a thorn bush, both of them meeting in rehab before they had decided to start a relationship together. They had been known to hang out at the abandoned church turned hang out for druggies together as they would sit there and get high on heroin. Nick could only gawk at her in fear and in disbelief of what was going on with her being the very first walker he encounters in Episode One. Since he passed out and was looking for her at first in Episode One, it's likely that Nick is unaware that she died of a drug overdose.
Chris and Nick have an estranged relationship, likely forced to be associated with each other because of the family situation rather than by choice. Due to their awkard interactions, it's likely that they couldn't ever bring themselves to see each other as step-siblings or perhaps even friends. Nick had tried to help him when Chris was about to break down due to Reed's taunting as he stands watch over the tied up brother of Connor. He simply said not to let Reed get to him, but shortly after Chris had shot at Reed, claiming he was about to turn. Otherwise, Chris seems to be the odd one out of the group as Reed had stated as even Nick doesn't seem to know how to approach him without it being a bit too distant for how long they've pressumably known each other. Nick doesn't know that Chris is dead so how he will be affected by this death will remain unknown.
Luciana seems to be impressed with Nick and his knowledge of the dead. But also seems to view him as a child and stupid for stealing a cupcake from drug dealers. But when she realizes that the cupcake is for the little girl who's father died. She then changes her opinion on Nick. In Pablo & Jessica, Luciana and Nick have their first romantic interaction with a passionate kiss.
Nick and Troy have a lot in common. They are both the troubled child of their families. They both love the feeling of getting a rush. They both have a fascination with the walkers. Nick and Troy both seem to have a brother type of bond.
