- "I don't know! Doesn't matter! You did! And now we can get the hell out of here and find Prescott. (...) No, it's a risk, but if we're going to show up in Prescott we should bring something to trade. No way all the gas is siphoned out of these cars. Some of it might still be good. Have to find cans..."
- —Matt to Lindsay on the way to Prescott.[src]
Little is known about Matt's life prior to or as the outbreak began, other than that he lived in Richmond with his sister, Lindsay.
Lindsay and Matt trek along a road after having met Clementine, who had vaguely directed them toward a settlement known as Prescott without much direction. After fighting through a group of walkers, Matt complains to Lindsay about sometimes being restricted by his morals. Lindsay points out a person to him. The man, Badger, identifies himself as a member of The New Frontier and orders Max to chase them down. Matt and Lindsay successfully fend off a few groups before fleeing through a horde of walkers. Lindsay points out a swamp which could offer them a place to hide. After fighting through another group of New Frontier fighters, the pair head into the swamp. Max and Badger lazily discuss following them before deciding that they had made them too angry to just let them go and give chase.
Lindsay and Matt follow the map Clementine had drawn for them to a junkyard, where they stop to search for supplies and a working vehicle. They fight through more walkers until stumbling upon a truck that had not been scavenged. Matt sends his sister into the truck without checking the backseat, which had been occupied by a walker. Matt and Lindsay kill the walker, but they are then fired upon by members of the New Frontier inhabiting the junkyard. Desperate, Matt and Lindsay run to a roadblock with more cover and return fire, shooting several of their number and scattering their attackers. Matt finds some gas to use, but the truck they had found had been ruined during the gunfight. More walkers find them, forcing Matt to drop the gasoline he had found and fight back.
