This article is about the Comic Series object. You may be looking for it's TV Universe counterpart. For other pages with the same name, see: Lucille

I lost my wife, when all this started. I was bad to her when she was alive. I always regretted that. Losing her made me...numb. That kept me alive. Then I found a bat, and it kept me alive. To me, it represented...her. I named it after her...Lucille. Laying it to rest here...was like I was laying her to rest.
―Negan to Derick about burying his baseball bat.[src]

Lucille is a wooden baseball bat covered in barbed wire first encountered in Issue 100 of Image Comics' The Walking Dead. Originally owned by Paul, but after his death, it is used by Negan to kill both humans and zombies alike. After Negan's fall in Issue 126, Dwight became the new possessor of Lucille. It was briefly returned to Negan, but was ultimately destroyed during the Whisperer War.

Negan later attempted to make a new Lucille after he was exiled and left to live alone. However, after a confrontation with Maggie Greene, Negan burned this second bat and never made another.

Pre-Apocalypse[]

The first person seeing wielding Lucille (before the bat was named at all) was a survivor named Paul. Whether he already owned the bat before the outbreak, or picked it up whilst scavenging afterwards, is unknown.

Post-Apocalypse[]

Here's Negan[]

In a stand-alone prequel story, Negan comes into contact with a small group of survivors led by Paul. Negan joins the group and takes note of Paul's bat, remarking that it is nice. When all of the survivors, bar Negan, are killed by zombies, he takes Paul's bat for himself.

Negan eventually settles into a new group, which would eventually become the Saviors. When a newcomer admits he has raped female survivors, Negan uses the bat to bash his skull in. Negan then wraps the bat in barbed wire and names it "Lucille" after his late wife. He promises that Lucille will protect them all, but also threatens to kill those who would stand in his way with her.

The Saviors[]

Lucille first appears in Issue 100 with Negan, as the Saviors ambush Rick's group. She is introduced to Rick and his group when she is used to brutally beat and kill Glenn as revenge for the loss of many Saviors. In Issue 113, Carl shoots Lucille and an enraged Negan demands the Alexandria-Safe Zone survivors throw Carl over the wall. The survivors refuse Negan's demands and he states that if they don't throw Carl over he will use Lucille to kill Rick, Heath, Nicholas, and Holly. This never happens, though Negan does get to utilize Lucille in the war, killing many soldiers and zombies. In Issue 122, Negan brings out a new and improved Lucille that is covered in zombie guts, so that when hit, survivors will get exposed to harmful pathogens that will lead to a deadly infection.

After Negan is defeated, Dwight takes Lucille and holds onto it. Dwight triumphantly held Lucille above his head and used it to show everyone that Negan had fallen and demanded for the fighting to stop. Afterwards, Dwight put Lucille in storage within the Sanctuary and it remained unused for the next two years.

After The War[]

When Dwight decides to leave the Sanctuary and end his leadership, he takes Lucille with him and brings it to Alexandria. Ultimately, he carries it on his person during the Whisperer War.

Volume 27: The Whisperer War[]

During the whisperer war Dwight gives Lucille back to Negan to help him kill Beta. While Negan is successful in striking Beta with the bat several times, it is ultimately shattered and destroyed, possibly due to exhaustion. Negan is devastated over the destruction of Lucille. Later, Negan is seen burying the broken Lucille and paying a poignant tribute to the woman he named the bat after, his wife. He apologizes for not giving her a proper burial and for naming a baseball bat after her.

Volume 29: Lines We Cross[]

Once Negan is exiled and left to live alone, he uses the grave where the remains of the baseball bat were buried to mourn his late wife, Lucille, whom the bat was named after. One day, he finds a baseball bat inside a barn and initially refuses to take it. After thinking about it, however, Negan concludes that replacing the baseball bat doesn't mean he would be replacing the real Lucille and admits he didn't really love the bat itself anyway. After taking the bat and gathering some barbed wire, he begins creating a new Lucille.

As Negan is creating the new Lucille, Maggie Greene arrives at his home to kill him. Negan, having become depressed and believing he deserves to die, accepts this and even grants Maggie permission to use the unfinished bat to kill him in the same way he killed Glenn. Maggie refuses and leaves him alone. Negan decides to finish the bat, but rather than use it, he ceremoniously burns it.
