Prior to the outbreak, the arena was home to several sporting and entertainment events, and was one of the biggest indoor stadiums in Los Angeles.
After the military occupied the city to contain the outbreak, they herded at least two thousand civilians into the arena, presumably to set up a refugee centre or hospital. However, at some point many of the civilians became infected and turned, causing mass panic and loss of life. The military personnel at the arena, including Corporal Adams, were forced to abandon the arena and seal all the doors shut, trapping everyone inside and effectively dooming all the uninfected civilians within.
Eventually the doors were opened by Daniel Salazar, who led the massive horde of infected walkers away from the arena and toward the military compound where his wife was being held.
- The arena is actually Vancouver's Pacific Coliseum, as most of the show was filmed in Vancouver, Canada.
- While the arena in the show does bear a resemblance to the Staples Center, its constant referral to as an "arena" seems to indicate that it being the LA Memorial Sports Arena is more likely.
