Lori Grimes is a main character and a survivor of the outbreak in AMC's The Walking Dead. She was the wife of Rick Grimes and mother of Carl and Judith. Believing Rick to be dead, she joined Shane Walsh in traveling to Atlanta, and counted on him to keep her and Carl safe, during which she began a sexual relationship with him.
Overview
Personality
Lori was a strong, selfless, independent, and emotional woman, but was also shown to be difficult and demanding at times. Having believed her husband to be dead, that the world was coming to an end, and trying her best to keep herself and Carl safe, Lori became extremely vulnerable and lonely. During this time she began a relationship with Shane Walsh, her husband's partner in duty, something that would cause her difficulty throughout the remainder of her life. With Rick's eventual return, she found herself filled with both extreme happiness and extreme guilt. She becomes torn between her husband and Shane; realizing they were both essential to her survival. However, her actions continuously put Rick and Shane at odds, significantly more so with the revealing of her pregnancy. Throughout season two, she strove to ensure that her unborn child will be healthy, and wondered whether the baby should even be born into such a horrible world. After the farm was overrun, she became deeply disturbed by Rick's actions, as well as Carl's involvement in the death of Shane. As the third season began, Rick started to shun her, something that pained her increasingly. However, Rick was devastated when he discovered that she died during childbirth. Lori showed herself to be a very selfless person when she faced her final moments of life, choosing baby Judith's life over her own, which she sacrificed with barely a second thought.
Pre-Apocalypse
King County, Georgia
Lori married her husband, Rick, at a young age. The two of them eventually had a son named Carl. They lived as a typical suburban family in King County, Cynthiana, Georgia. On Sundays, she made pancakes, despite the fact that she knew they were awful. Lori was a stay-at-home mother, while Rick was the main financial provider by working for the local Sheriff's department. Over time, their marriage became increasingly strained with Rick distancing himself from her. His unwillingness to talk about his feelings and their problems resulted in fights, where harsh words were spoken by Lori. It had even reached the point where she began to question his love for her and Carl. Lori confided in a friend (and fellow housewife), Paula, to ease the stress and seek advice.
Days before the apocalypse broke out, Lori found out through Shane about Rick going into a coma, and shared the sad news with Carl. As the apocalypse broke out, Shane convinced Lori and Carl that Rick is dead, and she and her son packed their things and left with Shane to head to a safe zone in Atlanta. Shane, Lori, and Carl got caught in a traffic jam on the way and befriended Carol Peletier and her family. While stopped outside the city, Lori and Shane watched in horror as Atlanta is bombed by napalm helicopters. As time progressed, Lori became extremely vulnerable and, believing Rick to be dead, began a sexual relationship with Shane.
In the episode "18 Miles Out", when Lori tried to convince Beth Greene to not commit suicide, Lori revealed that she attempted to contact her mother for weeks during the beginning of the apocalypse, but to no avail.
Post-Apocalypse
Season 1
"Days Gone Bye"
Lori is seen living with her son, Carl, her lover, Shane Walsh, and other survivors at a camp in a quarry just outside Atlanta. After Shane and Amy unsuccessfully try to contact the other members of their group on the radio, Lori suggests that they post signs on the road to Atlanta to warn survivors about the horrific situations in the city. Shane objects, causing her to storm off to her tent. Shane follows and the two talk it out and embrace in a kiss. When Carl comes by, Shane leaves and Lori reassures her son that she isn't going anywhere.
"Guts"
At the camp, Lori is sitting by a fire pit when Amy walks over carrying a red pail with a few mushrooms inside. Lori takes her turn to look for mushrooms after telling Carl to stay within the sight of Dale Horvath, an elderly survivor of the group who often keeps watch atop his RV. Lori heads into the woods and hears twigs snapping. Then Shane sneaks up behind her, puts his hand over her mouth, and pulls her down to the ground. Shane shushes her and calms her down, and she gently smacks his arm and smiles while saying, "You scared the hell out of me." They talk, kiss, and then Lori removes her wedding ring and has rough, rear, penetrative sex with Shane.
"Tell It to the Frogs"
A day later, Lori and Carl are reunited with Rick, whom they previously believed to be dead. Lori explains that she was told Rick would be med-evacuated to Atlanta, but it never happened. It was revealed by Carl that Lori (who in turn, was informed by Shane) told him that he was dead. Rick assures him that his mother was in right in telling him so, as she had no idea whether or not he'd survived the epidemic in the city. Rick thanks Shane for keeping his family safe. Afterwards, Lori and Rick proceed to re-establish their relationship by reminiscing over the family album and later, make love. Lori is angered by the fact that Shane lied to her about Rick being dead and warns him to stay away from her family.
"Vatos"
Lori is seen congratulating Andrea and Amy when they return to camp with several caught fish. Amy volunteers to teach Carl about knots and fishing, and Lori allows her to. When Jim is seen digging all the holes on top of the nearby hill, the group of survivors, including Lori, goes to confront him. Later, Lori is seen teaching a sort of school to Carl and Sophia while Jim is tied up nearby to prevent him from harming himself. At night, Lori joins the others for supper to eat some cooked fish. As they all chat, they soon are attacked by a group of walkers. However, Lori and Carl both survive after Rick and the others who went into Atlanta return with weapons.
"Wildfire"
Distraught over the previous night's events, Lori is against Rick's idea of leaving the quarry to go to the CDC, over Fort Benning (100 miles in the other direction), to find a cure for the infected Jim. Rick asks Lori if she blames him for not being there when the camp was attacked, and to support his decision to head for the CDC. She doesn't blame him exactly, but she doesn't know if she can follow him to the CDC on blind faith. When she asks for any kind of certainty on Rick's part, he tells her, "I love you. That's all I got." Later, Lori is confronted by Shane about Rick's decision. He asks her to convince him that his idea is a bad one and goes on to tell her that trying to repair her troubled marriage with Rick does not supersede the safety of the group. Lori, still angry with him for lying to her, replies that the group can make up their minds about where to go without bringing her marriage into the situation. Afterward, Lori agrees to follow Rick to the CDC and the decision is made to depart in the morning. When the RV breaks down, Jim makes his wishes to be left to die and Lori, along with Dale, agree that his request should be respected despite Rick's belief that their friend is delirious.
When the group arrives to the CDC, they find that the complex has been completely closed off by shutters; when they receive no answer, they all agree that they had to leave the area before it got dark. However, Rick is insistent that someone is still alive in the complex. Rick begins to yell at the security camera, demanding that whoever is inside needs to let them in. Lori and the others become increasingly panicked as more and more walkers begin to approach. Frantically, she tries to get Rick to leave with them, but he refuses. Just as they begin to flee from the complex, the shutter doors open.
"TS-19"
Lori and the other survivors enjoy a short reprieve from mortal danger after Dr. Edwin Jenner takes them inside the CDC under the condition that they submit to blood tests. The group celebrates with a meal and wine. When questioned about the lack of other people, Jenner explains that he was the only person still alive in the complex because most had fled to be with their families and others began to commit suicide after a certain period of time. Afterward, Lori and Rick enjoy a hot shower together before going off on their own to explore. Lori finds Carl in the recreational room with Carol and Sophia, reading books.
Carl goes off with Carol and Sophia to sleep, while Lori decides to stay behind for a while and browse the library. She is startled by a drunken Shane, who insists that she listen to his side of the story. Angry, Lori attempts to leave the room, but is cut off by Shane who closes all exits of escape. He tries to plead his case to her, telling her that he believed Rick was dead and that if he hadn't lied to her she would've died trying to get to him. When Lori continues to refuse to listen to him, Shane becomes desperate and attempts to rape her. Lori scratches him across the neck, and Shane flees the room, leaving a frightened Lori to herself. An equally drunk Rick returns to their bedroom and assures the crying Lori that they had nothing to be afraid of anymore. The next day, Lori avoids eye contact with Shane when he makes a vague statement that implied his behavior from last night wasn't like him at all. Later, Jenner shows them how the mysterious disease affects the human brain via "TS-19" (Test Subject 19) and explains that it only reactivated the brain stem, not the part that made a person human. He also admits that he didn't know how to treat the disease and that he has lost contact with other CDC facilities.
When it is revealed that the CDC complex has been rigged to self-destruct, Lori implores that Jenner allow them to escape, telling him that they wish only to survive for as long as they can. Jenner eventually allows them to leave, choosing to remain behind with Jacqui. With the use of the grenade Carol had in her purse, the survivors manage to reach their vehicles just as the CDC building explodes.
Season 2
"What Lies Ahead"
Lori is with her family while driving up to a vehicle jammed highway. Finding the way blocked and Dale's RV breaking down, they decide to take a break and look for supplies in the abandoned vehicles. When a herd of walkers comes passing by Rick yells at Lori and the group to hide under the cars. Sophia panics and bolts into the woods. Lori covers Carol's mouth to prevent the walkers from hearing her moans and cries. Once the herd has passed, Carl finds a Gerber of tools. Lori tekks him to put them down, but Carl doesn't listen and asks Shane. Shane yells at him to give it to Dale. Lori then confronts Shane about his treatment towards Carl and then finds out that Shane is going to leave the group. Rick returns after the search for Sophia without her and everyone waits until the next day to continue searching. In the meantime, Lori continues to comfort Carol.
"Bloodletting"
The episode opened with Lori chatting to another mother outside Carl's elementary school. Lori opened up about her marital problems with Rick and the fight they had that morning. Shane soon showed up to tell her that Rick has been shot. Shane offered to tell Carl, but Lori insisted on doing it herself. Lori was then seen with the group searching for Sophia, wondering why a single gunshot was heard (not knowing that Carl had been shot). Later, Maggie came by horse to pick up Lori and rushed her to the Greene Family Farm. She and Rick comforted each other over Carl's injuries and decided what needed to be done to save Carl's life.
"Save the Last One"
Lori and Rick continued to worry over Carl. Hershel came and told them that she and Rick would have to make a decision whether to proceed with a surgery if Shane and Otis didn't make it back in time with medical supplies. They continued to debate whether they wanted Carl to continue living in a zombie apocalyptic world when Shane then showed up with the medical supplies.
"Cherokee Rose"
Since Shane helped save Carl's life, Lori didn't want Shane to leave the group. Lori then asks if Glenn could get something "personal" during his trip to the pharmacy for her (which was later revealed to be a pregnancy test). Afterwards, Lori helped the group pull out a walker that fell into a well. Lori continued to be with her son as he recovered and told him that they lied about finding Sophia only to try and keep his hopes up when he was injured. Later after Glenn returned with Lori's pregnancy test, she went into a field in the dark in order to conceal it, used the test and discovered that it was positive, which visibly upset and terrified her.
"Chupacabra"
Lori was seen at the beginning of the episode with Shane during the evacuation. They meet Carol and Ed on the highway and asked them to look after Carl while she and Shane went and scouted ahead only to witness the military bombardment on Atlanta. Lori then woke up and helps Carol with the laundry. Later, she was confronted by Glenn, who knew her secret. She begged him not to say anything to Rick until she found the right time to tell him. Rick then asked Lori for advice about Sophia, since it had been days since they last saw her and the search for her was starting to fade. Lori insisted that they keep searching and said that if it were Carl, they would want them to keep looking so Rick decided to continue the search. Later, Lori was seen helping Carol, Patricia and Beth prepare a meal for everyone in honor of thanking each other for their help.
"Secrets"
Lori and Carl were seen feeding the chickens on Hershel's farm. Carl mentioned to Lori that everything is food for something. Afterwards, she was again confronted by Glenn, who urged her to talk to Rick about the pregnancy and stated that he would suppor her and help her out no matter what. Later, Lori and Rick found out that Carl was armed with a gun and debated whether he should be trained using weapons or not. Lori disagreed and said that Carl was too young and that he shouldn't be out where he could be in danger, as he was still recovering from his gunshot wound. However, she eventually agreed with Rick and allowed him to practice. Once the group disbanded, Lori helped Hershel with repairing the fence and thanked him for everything. Then, she discovered that her and the group of survivors were not allowed stay at the farm. She then talked to Rick and said that he had to convince Hershel to change his mind and allow them all to stay. Rick replied, telling her that he just needed time to work things out. After Glenn told Dale about Lori's pregnancy, Dale confronted her about it by bringing up her symptoms and discussing his experience with his wife and her inability to successfully bring a child to term. He attempted to get Lori to think about the child and her decision on what she did with it. She decided that she didn't want to keep the child and asked Glenn to go to the pharmacy back in town to get her the morning after pill. He agreed, taking Maggie with him, and Maggie is attacked in the process. When the two return, Maggie was angry at Lori for making them risk their lives for her personal issues and threw her methotrexate pills on the ground. Glenn later came to Lori to give her some prenatal vitamins just in case she changed her mind. Lori decided to take the pills to induce a miscarriage and swallowed them, but immediately had a change of heart, ran out to the field and threw them up. Rick then entered their tent and saw the pills. He confronted Lori about the child. They began arguing about what she had done and concealing the pregnancy from Rick, and Lori reassured him that she threw up the pills but voiced her concerns about having a baby. They decided to go through with the pregnancy together, even though Lori informed Rick that the child may be Shane's. He says he knows and understands do that she thought he was dead.
"Pretty Much Dead Already"
Glenn told the group that the barn was filled with walkers and the group went to investigate. Rick said that he would handle it and discuss matters with Hershel. After Shane found out that Lori is pregnant, he talked to her, trying to figure out the situation. He insists that he would still be around to help his child since he was convinced that he is the father. Lori tells him whether the child is his or not, she and Rick will raise it. Later, Shane gets frustrated with Rick and his slow progress with Hershel and decides that the group should stop fooling around and kill the walkers. Lori tells him to stop and let Rick handle it but he doesn't listen. He opens the barn and the group proceed to kill the walkers. Lori runs and holds Carl back from getting hurt and when Sophia is revealed to be a walker, she comforts Carl and holds him in her arms since he cared about her so much.
"Nebraska"
After talking to Daryl about going out to help Rick and Glenn find Hershel, Lori took a revolver and a car, then drove towards the town. While driving out of the farm, she looked on the map for directions to the town. When she looked back to the road, she hit a walker and panics, causing her to lose control of the car, which flipping it several times.
"Triggerfinger"
Lori remained injured and unconscious after accidentally hitting a walker with Maggie's car, which flipped into a ditch. When Lori came to, a walker was trying to get to her through a smashed window. Lori grabbed a screwdriver and stabs the walker through the eye, killing it. When she managed to get out of the car wreck, she was suddenly attacked by another walker. After a terrifying struggle, Lori eventually retrieved her gun from the car, shooting the walker in the head. Later, Shane found Lori walking up the road. He got out of his car and began fussing over her. Lori refuses his attention and refused to get into the car, saying that she needed to find Rick (who had taken off with Glenn to find Hershel). Realizing that he had to lie in order to get her back to the farm safety, Shane told Lori that Rick was already at the farm. She believed him, and they drove back. Later, they arrived at the farm, where several of the survivors hurried to the car to see if she was okay. Lori asked about Rick, discovered Shane had lied, and angrily lashed out at him. Shane defended his actions, insisting that the baby's safety was at stake. The group was shocked to hear that Lori was pregnant, including Carl; who was upset that he was kept in the dark. Later in the house, Carl and Lori discussed the baby, and he is excited about being a big brother. Shane appears, asking Lori if they can talk but she is still angry about his dishonesty earlier. Shane argues that his intentions are only ever in keeping Lori safe and wills her to see that she loves him too. Though Lori categorically denies it, she can't bring herself to look Shane in the eye. The next day as the Grimes family are reuinited, Rick notices Lori's cuts and asks her what happened. Shane interjects that he had found Lori walking alone and brought her back to the farm. There is tension between the two men.
In the final scene, Rick and Lori are in their tent alone. Both wounded, they help each other undress. Lori says they need to talk about Shane, and that he thinks the baby is his. She assures her husband that no matter what, it will always be Rick's. Rick confesses that in the bar he took human lives to protect what is his. Lori snuggles close and whispers calculatingly into his ear that Shane thinks what's Rick's is his; that Shane is dangerous and needs to be stopped. We are left with a close up of Rick's face, as his perception of Shane is changed.
"18 Miles Out"
Maggie confesses to Lori that Glenn lost confidence after the shootout at the bar. "Tell him to man up," Lori advises. At the farm, Lori brings Beth a tray of food. She empathizes with Beth's loss of her mother, by saying she herself had tried unsuccessfully to get her own mother on the phone when the zombie apocalypse broke out. Beth asks Lori how she could have a baby in such a world. "I don't really have a choice," Lori says. Meanwhile, Lori collects Beth's lunch, which hasn't been touched. "It's just so pointless," Beth cries. As Lori clears Beth's tray, she notices a knife missing. She confronts Beth, who pulls it from under the covers and hands it over. At the farm, Maggie scolds Beth for considering suicide. Lori and Andrea listen in from the kitchen. Andrea tells Lori she shouldn't have taken the knife away — Beth "has to choose to live on her own." Lori counters that Andrea got through her own death wish by shirking her chores: "You sit up on that RV working on your tan with a shotgun in your lap," she snaps. Andrea accuses Lori of taking her blessings for granted: Rick and Carl both came back from the dead, she's pregnant, she even had a romance with Shane. "The rest of us have piled up our losses, but you just keep on," Andrea says. Unguarded, Beth locks herself in the bathroom and smashes the mirror. Lori pries open the door, but not before Beth has cut her wrist. "I'm sorry," Beth cries. Andrea runs to the farmhouse after Beth's attempted suicide. Lori reports that Beth didn't cut herself deeply. "She wants to live," Andrea smiles after being told by Maggie that shes forbidden to enter the Greene Family's home.
"Judge, Jury, Executioner"
Lori finds Rick tying a noose in the barn. He asks if she supports his decision. "If you think it's best," she says, asking what happened on the road with Shane. "He won't be a problem any more," Rick answers. As the sun sets, Rick again asks Lori if she thinks he's doing the right thing. Lori nods. The group gathers in the house. Rick asks if anyone thinks Randall should be spared. Dale posits that the only people who think so are himself and Glenn, but Glenn too sides with Rick. "He's not one of us," Glenn offers. Rick brings Carl back to the camp and tells Lori what happened. "He wanted to watch," Rick says. "I couldn't." Meanwhile, Dale walks through the fields. He hears the moans of a dying cow and goes to investigate; the cow had been gutted. He turns and is attacked by the walker that Carl found in the creek bed. Back at camp, the others hear Dale's screams. Daryl runs to the scene, where the walker is on top of Dale, tearing into his stomach. Daryl stabs the walker in the head, then shouts for help. Dale's intestines are spilling out of his gut. He goes into shock. When Hershel arrives, he reports that Dale can't be saved. As Dale writhes on the ground, Carl sees the body of the walker lying nearby. Horrified, he buries his head in Lori's lap. Andrea begs Rick to help Dale. Rick upholsters his gun, but can't bring himself to pull the trigger. Daryl takes the weapon and aims it at Dale's head. "Sorry brother," Daryl says and fires, killing Dale out of mercy.
"Better Angels"
Lori and others help to pack their belongings into the back of the truck, while Rick delegates roles and instructions. Lori witnesses Shane's unhappiness with Rick about his decision to release Randall. It appears that Rick is back in command, and Shane is obviously bitter about it. Out in front of the farmhouse, Lori is struggling to lift a packed crate. T-Dog insists that she shouldn't be lifting anything heavy in her condition, offers to assist, and Lori is grateful. She tells Hershel that she, Rick and Carl will sleep in the living room, but Hershel refuses it; generously offering up his bedroom instead. Later, Lori approaches Shane, who is fixing an electrical tower. Lori asks Shane to come down from the tower. They briefly and lightheartedly reminisce about a pre-apocalypse occasion where Shane showed Rick up by fixing a sink (and when Rick flooded the basement). Lori talks openly about her fears in light of Sophia and Dale's deaths. She admits uncertainty over who has fathered her unborn child, but thanks Shane genuinely for protecting her and Carl prior to Rick's return. Tearfully, Lori also apologizes for her part in producing "confusion" as a result of their illicit affair.
"Beside the Dying Fire"
Lori is at the house when the herd arrives at the farm. She goes to get Carl, but she can't find him and starts to panic. She doesn't want to leave and wants to go out to look for Carl, but Carol convinces her not to. When she, Beth, Patricia, Carol, and T-Dog try to flee, Patricia is grabbed and bitten by a zombie; after some struggling, Lori pulls Beth away from Patricia and Carol gets separated from them. As Lori, Beth and T-Dog drive away from the farm, T-Dog says they need to drive toward the coast (something he remarks they should have done a long time ago.) Lori threatens that either they go back to the highway, or she and Beth will jump out the car. T-Dog gives in. They reach the highway and meet up with the others (except Jimmy, Andrea, and Patricia.) Later on, Lori tells Rick that he must have had a good reason for keeping Jenner's secret hidden from the group. Alone, Lori comforts Rick. Rick starts to reveal that he killed Shane- weary of his threats, and wanting their feuding to end for good. During the revelation, a speechless Lori slowly withdraws. She is fearful at what her husband has become, and guilty of her own hand in it. Rick goes on to say that Shane turned into a zombie and that Carl put him down. Shocked, Lori takes a few seconds to catch her breath- but when Rick tries to touch her, she instantly pulls back, angered and horrified. Around the campfire, Rick reacts badly when told by Carol to do something to help their dire situation. Lori comforts a crying Carl, while Rick indignantly defends his role as reluctant leader; saying he killed his best friend for the group. Fed up with their inappreciaton of him, Rick delivers an ultimatum - leave now, or follow his lead. Neither Lori nor the others leave.
Season 3
"Seed"
Due to Lori's pregnancy, she's not able to help out with much zombie killing. As the survivors discover the prison, Lori helps distract the zombies from behind the interior fence, making it possible for Rick to close the gate at the other end of the field. Lori later helps take out some of the walkers by staying behind the fence, shooting the walkers. After the group relaxes for the first time in months in front of a campfire that night, Lori tries to talk to Rick into letting the exhausted group rest outside the prison for a few days. Rick argues it's a waste of time, and feels patronized when Lori says he's doing the best he can. He makes it clear that he doesn't want to talk to her- about anything- and walks away. Inside the Prison, Lori tells Hershel that she is worried about the baby being stillborn and coming back to life to "tear me apart." Even though Hershel doesn't want Lori to think about that, she continues and asks him to kill her if she dies in childbirth and turns, without any hesitation. Hershel agrees. She also tells him it would have been better if she'd never made it off the farm, and that Rick and Carl both hate her. (In this episode, at night in the field outside the prison while talking to Carol, Daryl refers to Lori's baby as "Little Shane," implying that the group knows that she is too far along for the baby to be Rick's.) After the first night inside the prison, Lori stays behind as the men, and Maggie, try to find the cafeteria.
"Sick"
Lori has a small but significant role in this episode. As Rick leads the prison survivors to their new cell block promised to them after a negotiation, Lori stays behind to take care of Hershel.
We begin to witness the rift deepening between mother and son. Carl managed to find the infirmary alone, killing two walkers, then returning to the group with supplies. Although grateful, Lori severely scolds him for his lack of self safety. Feeling unappreciated, Carl snaps at her to get off his back, but Beth tells him off for being disrespectful to his mother. Carl leaves angrily.
In a riveting scene, Hershel stops breathing and Lori performs CPR on him. After saving Hershel, Rick returns and shares a sentimental moment with the group, as they acknowledge how lucky the Greene family are to be together. Feeling sad for her own family's disintegration, Lori leaves; Rick appears to follow. On a walkway outside, Lori and Rick have a sparse conversation, without making eye contact. Rick says he doesn't think Lori is a bad mother, but doesn't correct her when she replies, "but wife is a different story". They both acknowledge ironically that "for better or for worse" this was it: divorce isn't an option. Rick gives Lori credit for saving Hershel, but she admits to hoping Rick wanted to talk about their marriage. Not ready to forgive and forget yet, Rick can only allow himself to reach out and touch Lori's shoulder stiffly. He thanks her on the group's behalf for saving Hershel, then leaves. Dejected, Lori sheds heartbroken tears alone.
"Killer Within"
Lori, Beth, and Carl help Hershel with crutches, and decide to take a walk outside in the courtyard of the prison. Everybody watches as Hershel seems to be fully recovering from the incident with his leg. Rick and Lori smile warmly at each other, on opposite sides of the fence. The moment of happiness is broken when walkers start to terrorize the prison. Rick yells for her, but is unable to get to her. Lori, Maggie, and Carl flee to Cell Block C only to discover that there are walkers on the inside too. Running through the dark corridors of the prison, the stress of the situation causes Lori to go into labor. Carl finds them a safe place inside the boiler room. Lori starts losing too much blood and Maggie tells her that she needs to have a C-section or else the baby will die. Lori makes the decision to have her abdomen cut open so the baby can be removed, despite Maggie's saying that she will not survive the procedure. She says her final goodbyes and hugs Carl, telling him to not change what he is: a good boy. Then, Maggie reluctantly cuts her open, stating: "I'm sorry." before she begins.The shock and the loss of blood causes Lori to die almost instantly as Maggie delivers the baby. Maggie prepares to leave, but Carl can't bear the idea of his mother reanimating, so he decides to prevent it from happening. As Maggie pulls out her gun, Carl wants to do it because it is his mother. Maggie stands at the door with the baby to give him some privacy to say goodbye to his mother, and hears a gunshot fired. Carl walks past her to the door and she stands there, speechless. When all the survivors reunite, Carl, Maggie and the baby (carried by Maggie) all enter with tears in their eyes. Everyone looks at them and realizes what has happened with everyone upset and Rick rolling on the floor weeping over his dead wife.
"Hounded"
Lori is one of the four dead people heard talking to Rick through a telephone. She informs him that the people he had spoken to previously were Amy, Jim, and Jacqui, revealing that all the calls did not actually take place in the real world, but were merely hallucinations in Rick's mind. Rick breaks down talking to her, saying that he loved her. She tells him that she loves him, but he needs to get it together. She reminds him of Carl and his newborn daughter, telling him that they need him. The connection gets scrambled and Rick could no longer hear Lori after that, so he hangs up the phone.
"The Suicide King"
Rick has a vision of Lori just as he is deciding the fate for Tyreese's group. Rick begins to lash out at her, with the rest of the group believing he is yelling for Tyreese's group to leave.
"Home"
From the prison catwalk, Rick witnesses a vision of a woman in a white dress standing over the graves of herself and T-Dog. As Rick approaches her, she disappears, but reappears outside of the orison's fence. When Rick approaches her a second time, the woman is revealed to be a vision that Rick is having of Lori. "Lori" then gently touches Rick's face in a loving manner.
"This Sorrowful Life"
While Rick is outside looking for wire to tie up Michonne, Lori appears to him at the Prison's catwalk. Rick tries to convince himself that she isn't there, but notices Lori isn't disappearing.
"Welcome to the Tombs"
While Rick is getting ready to depart the prison with the rest of the group due to The Governor's impending attack, Lori appears to him on the prison catwalk. Later, when Rick, Daryl, and Michonne return to the prison with Tyreese, Sasha, Karen, and all of the other Woodbury citizens, Rick glances back up at the catwalk and notices that Lori's vision has disappeared. And then he understood; hallucinations were showing him that he had made a bad decision, and when this time she was not there, Rick finally knew that he was right this time.

Lori died as a result of the actions of Andrew, who lured a group of walkers into the prison in a delibrate attempt to have Rick and the others killed; as Lori, Maggie, and Carl attempt to escape from the walkers Andrew let in, Lori began to enter into labor due to the stress around the same time as a group of walkers rounded the corner. As they fled and hid in the boiler room, Lori began to suffer from contractions. Although Maggie encouraged her to hold on while they figured out how to escape, she insisted on that she had to start pushing the baby out now. Midway into pushing, however, Maggie told her to stop as blood started to leak out. Unable to push the baby out naturally, Lori told Maggie that she had to give her an emergency Cesarean Section. As a result of what Andrew had done however, with the walkers he'd lured in all over the prison trapping Maggie and Carl in the boiler room and away from Hershel and the others in the prison who were fighting the walkers in other rooms, there was no alternative than for Maggie to give Lori a C-Section by fatally cutting her stomach open with a nearby knife, which she did at the insistence of Lori herself after the latter realized that, due to the circumstances of the birth (Lori not being fully dilated due to the stress of hiding from the walkers Andrew lured in), the baby would not survive otherwise.

After Lori tearfully bid farewell to Carl and tells him that he must stay strong and protect his father and his new sibling, a reluctant Maggie proceeded to cut into her abdomen, causing her extreme pain, shock, and loss of blood. Eventually, Lori passed out from the pain and ultimately died before she could see her newborn daughter. Maggie then wrapped the baby with Carl's vest and prepared to leave. Carl, however, told her they couldn't leave Lori to reanimate and went back. Saying a final goodbye to his mother, Carl unceremoniously shoots Lori in the head, preventing her from coming back.

Relationships
Rick Grimes
Lori was Rick's wife and the mother of his child, Carl. Rick and Lori married at a young age, which, according to Lori, could have contributed to their marital problems in later years. They had many problems and argued frequently. This is seen clearly in two different flashbacks, one in the episode "Days Gone Bye" and the other in "Bloodletting". At one point, Lori even questioned whether or not she still loved Rick. After the outbreak, Shane, Rick's best friend, told Lori that Rick was dead and began to have an affair with her. However, when Rick arrived at the Atlanta camp, Lori immediately broke off her relationship with Shane. She gave him back his wedding ring and the two began to reconnect as husband and wife. She disagreed with some of the decisions he made but saw it her duty as his wife to stand by his side and support him. Rick quickly found out that Lori had an affair with Shane but is able to control his anger. It is clear that Lori remains remorseful over her relationship with Shane during Rick's absence, which she reveals to Rick in episode, "Secrets". Rick and Lori's relationship is often tested and challenged by Rick's decisions as the leader of the group, in addition to the friction between Rick and Shane, who Lori knowingly placed at odds. Their relationship seems to be more or less okay until Rick kills Shane. At first, Lori is furious at Rick for Carl being involved in Shane's death but eventually understands and forgives him. Rick, from what we see in the time that passes between Season 2 and Season 3, seems to be more preoccupied with finding a safe place for the group and more specifically, for Lori to have her baby, than he is with patching things up with his wife, as he thought there would be more time after they cleared the prison. When Lori dies, Rick is traumatized and devastated, blaming himself both for not being there to help her and for not killing Andrew, who had indirectly caused her to become separated from Hershel. He becomes more aggressive and his sanity, regard for humanity, and morality starts to become questionable. As he is grieving for Lori's death, he hallucinates hearing her talking to him through a phone. He reveals that he thought there would be time to rebuild their relationship after they found a safe place and the baby was born. He tells her that he loves her multiple times and apologetically tells her that he should have told her that before she died. When deciding the fate of Tyreese's group, Rick has an hallucination of Lori, telling her to leave which causes to Tyreese's group to run away, scared. However, the visions of Lori reappear frequently, serving as a moral compass for Rick to do the right thing (ex. She appears on the prison catwalk when Rick looks for wire to bind Michonne's hands with. Rick drops the wire and changes his mind and refuses to hand over Michonne to The Governor. After the conflict with The Governor is over and Rick and Tyreese move everyone from Woodbury into the prison, Rick's visions of Lori stop as he finally did the right thing and is able to move on. Rick is shown to still love Lori well after her death as shown by him still wearing his wedding ring, confessing to Carol that sometimes he expects to see Lori next to him when he wakes up in the morning. When the group arrives at the Alexandria Safe-Zone Rick begins to feel saddened since it is the type of area they'd hope to move into one day, though she didn't make it. When a drunken Pete is talking to Rick he arrogantly brings up Lori offering his condolences which Rick accepts but is noticeably on edge by the very mention of her, then when Pete leaves is shown holding his ring on his hand, contemplating his prior commitment to her over his feelings for Jesse. When Morgan brings up Lori to Rick, he bluntly discusses her fate, showing that perhaps he had moved on from her (and Jesse, following her own death) because he had made his peace with his feelings for her. Carl Grimes
Lori's firstborn child and only son, she was fiercely protective of him. In addition to her own efforts to keep her child safe, Lori often relied on Dale and other members of the group to watch him. In Rick's absence, she was relieved that Shane dutifully stepped into the father role. While Rick remained the group's reluctant leader, Lori's main focus was invested into preserving Carl's innocence in a world that grew colder and more bleak as days went by. However, she realized, just as Rick had, that efforts to shelter Carl from the blatant horrors were futile. When she was about to die, she told Carl not to be afraid, and that she thought he was brave, strong, clever, and told him to always make choices based on what he thought was right and to never doubt his decisions and let the world change him, Aware of what he could become growing up in such a violent world. On a run to King County in the hopes of finding more weapons, Carl decides to retrieve a picture of Lori, so Judith could know how her mother looked like. When he finally retrieves the picture, he smiles while looking at his mother. After Carl was forced to shoot Lori in the head, he became harder, as seen when he killed Jody in cold blood. Hershel and Rick were alarmed at his actions, leading Rick to change how he treated Carl and Carl's role in prison life. Carl and Rick became closer, and Carl became more of the son Lori would be proud of. Judith Grimes
When Lori first found out about her pregnancy, she began crying as she knew the hardships her baby would cause for the group. Lori was going to abort her baby by taking tablets, and did so, but later threw them up as she was unsure what to do. She either didn't know that the pills would not actually terminate her pregnancy or she did know and she tried it as an act of desperation. Rick discovered the remaining pills and confronted her about it, prompting Lori to confess to both the pregnancy and the liaison with Shane. Although it seems that Lori made a "choice" to keep her baby, in reality, she may have realized that, without proper medical facilities to pursue an abortion, there really was no "choice." Lori's awareness of this was revealed in her conversation with Beth when Beth asked her how she could bring a baby into "this world." After going into labor in the prison, Lori knew that her and the baby wouldn't both survive and that one of them was going to die. Without any consideration, she chose herself and demanded Maggie perform a C-section on her. As Maggie began cutting Lori open, Lori cried out in pain and then passed away due to blood loss. Lori never saw her baby daughter before she died. Shane WalshLori and Shane (Rick's best friend) had presumably known each other for years. Pre-Apocalypse, they both lived in the same small town in Georgia. It is mentioned that Shane had been a real DIY kind of guy and even showed up Rick by fixing the Grimes' sink. After believing that Rick had died in hospital, Shane, sparing no thought for himself, accompanied Lori and Carl to Atlanta, where they believed a refugee center to be. It is implied that on the way there, Shane and Lori had a sexual encounter, both desperately needing physical contact amid the chaos and grief surrounding. When the survivors are stationed outside of Atlanta, Lori sneaks off into the woods to meet Shane for a romantic tryst (Shane later mentions that the pair "carried on quite a bit" in these times). Rick's reunion with his family and Shane is bittersweet, as Shane struggles to accept that Rick has rightfully resumed his role as a protector, father, and lover. Consequently, friction between the trio worsens and is further complicated by Lori's pregnancy- and the truth that Shane could very well be the baby's father. To Lori, he insists that their affair had been "a long time coming", implying that there could possibly have been romantic tension present prior to the zombie breakout. But she continues to deny that any real feelings had ever existed between them. At a bid to eliminate the threat of her former lover (and bury her regretted mistake for good), Lori warns Rick of Shane's erratic behavior and implies that Rick should handle him before he does something dangerous. However, after Dale's funeral in "Better Angels", she appears to have had a change of heart, not only apologizing to Shane for putting him at odds with Rick, but also acknowledging that he hadn't misinterpreted the feelings between them. Lori is overwhelmed with shock, grief and anger when learning that Rick killed Shane and she reacts even more horrified that Carl shot Shane once he turned into a walker. Eventually, Lori felt remorseful for putting Rick and Shane at odds, which indicates that she possibly got over Shane's death and understood why Rick had to do it. Carol PeletierBoth original members of the Atlanta survivors, and mothers, Lori and Carol form a friendship. Both women are shown comforting and offering advice to one another, especially regarding their children. It is evident that Carol looks up to Lori as a matriarch; even referring to her as the "first lady" of the group. During Lori's pregnancy and the group's months on the run, Lori and Carol become even closer, as Lori looks to Carol for comfort and Carol plans to perform a C-section on her. Carol and Lori are separated after walkers overrun the prison. When Carol returns to the group, she learns of Lori's death, which quickly reduces her to tears. Glenn RheeAs the first to know about Lori's pregnancy, Glenn proves his friendship to Lori by offering to ride into town to retrieve helpful medical supplies, at the personal risk of a walker attack. He also provides wise advice for her to talk to Rick about the pregnancy, which she is grateful for. In the episode "Say the Word", Glenn refers to her as family after her untimely death, showing just how much he cared for her. Dale Horvath
Lori and Dale were part of the original Atlanta group, and the two seemed to have a good relationship with he each other. In Secrets, Dale tried to encourage Lori about her pregnancy, sharing a story about his late wife's miscarriage. Their talk helped convince her not to end her pregnancy. Dale was also extremely concerned about Shane's mental state and his role in Otis' death, and told Lori his suspicions, helping to start a chain of events that led to Shane's death. Lori was clearly shocked and saddened by Dale's death. AndreaLori and Andrea had a fairly bad relationship. In Atlanta after Amy is killed, Lori tells everyone to let her grieve, instead of shooting Amy themselves, and tells Andrea she's sorry for her loss. At the church, Andrea hears Lori and Shane talking about their affair, she mentions it to both Shane and Lori, but never Rick, possibly because of her relationship with Shane, or possibly not wanting to upset Rick. After the barn massacre, Beth falls into catatonic, related shock. Andrea and Lori argue when Andrea leaves Beth on her own to decide if she wanted to commit suicide, when she promised she'd watch Beth. Lori tells Andrea that maintaining household chores is primary to "creating a live worth living" and Andrea disagrees, saying that patrolling and fighting back against walkers is what's important. Andrea accuses Lori of taking her luck and safety for granted but Lori reminds her of the significant trauma she has experienced, such as Carl being shot. Andrea tells Lori to "Go in there and tell that little girl [Beth] that everything is going to be okay, just like it is for you, she'll get a husband, a son, baby, boyfriend...She just has to look on the bright side". This argument ruined whatever friendship the two had, they both never speak again and Lori is killed before Andrea reunites with the group in the prison, although Andrea does appear saddened when she finds out about her death and seems worried about Carl. AmyLori and Amy got along and respected each other during their stay at the Atlanta Camp. Lori agreed with Amy about attempting a rescue mission to save Andrea and the other survivors trapped in Atlanta in contrast to Shane who claimed that it was too late. After the death of Amy, Lori is very remorseful and tells Andrea that everyone loved her and that she will be missed. Jim
Jim and Lori didn't have much of a relationship, but she showed care when Jim was having sun stroke, and forgiveness when he apologized for his actions towards Sophia and Carl. Jim also gave Lori short but wise parenting advice to her about keeping Carl safe, thus showing he doesn't want her to have to live with the guilt of losing a child like he had. Their relationship was not explored more before both of their deaths. T-DogT-Dog and Lori did not interact much with each other, although it is clear they had a good relationship. During Season 2's episode, "Beside the Dying Fire", T-Dog insists to Lori and Beth to head for the coast where it is safe, but Lori refused and was mad at T-Dog and forced him to turn around to the highway. This did indicate how much T-Dog cared about their safety. Both T-Dog and Lori met their demises on the same day as a result of Andrew. Daryl DixonDaryl never really interacted with Lori much, but in Season 2 their relationship hit a bump when she asked him to go find Rick, which made Daryl very angry and he angrily told her to go find them herself. However, it seems over the winter and by the start of Season 3 they have formed a good relationship. Daryl is clearly saddened by Lori's sudden death, and was determined to ensure her baby did not also die. Daryl was also very concerned for Carl following the loss of his mother. Merle DixonLori and Merle were never shown onscreen together once in the series due to Merle being left behind in Atlanta and disappearing after amputating his hand and Lori dying before Merle was reunited with the group in Season 3. Although Merle never mentioned or referred to Lori once in the series, it is clear that Lori did not like Merle much. Lori showed little remorse for Merle being left behind in Atlanta and told Rick not to think about it. When Rick wanted to return to Atlanta to retrieve a bag of guns and free Merle from a rooftop, Lori, like Shane and many others were against the decision due to the bad person Merle was. Lori claimed Merle's life was not worth anyone's life even with the guns thrown in, in "Tell It to the Frogs". Merle most likely showed little remorse for Lori's death due to him showing no sympathy for Carl having to shoot her to prevent reanimation and he crowned it simply as "mercy killing". JacquiJacqui and Lori were never seen interacting, although it is evident they did have a friendship, as Lori tells Rick how she had wanted to ask Jacqui a question before remembering that she had died.
Hershel Greene
Lori first met Hershel when he was preparing to operate on Carl following a hunting accident. At first she acted hostile towards him because of Otis' mistake of shooting Carl, and when Hershel said he was veterinarian, she doubt his skill even more but eventually she gave in due to them having no other options. After Hershel successfully saved Carl's life, and learning of Otis' sacrifice for Carl, she strongly appreciated him saving Carl's life and developed strong respect him and his family. Throughout her stay at the farm, she grew closer with Hershel, especially after Rick told him that Lori was pregnant. When Hershel went missing after the barn massacre, Rick wanted to find him, but Lori disagreed, saying a leader is needed to stay on the farm and that Shane is dangerous if left alone. But when Rick said he wanted to find Hershel because he's the only one who could deliver Lori's baby and to inform him about Beth's condition, she agreed. Finally, Hershel returned and eventually, Lori got closer to Maggie and Beth as well. Lori continues to support both Rick and Hershel's decisions to do what's best for the group, especially when Randall was taken hostage in the farm. During the walkers invasion at the farm, Lori stayed behind inside the house and when she was going to run away from the farm with Carol, Beth, and Patricia, she repeatedly yelled at Hershel to stop defending his farm, but he ignores her and after giving up calling him, she ran away with Beth and the two of them are saved by T-Dog. Finally, the group reunite at the highway after the invasion and they continue their travel to find a safe place. During the months the group spent on the run after the farm was overrun, Hershel and Lori became even closer. Hershel is worried about Lori and told Rick that she can't take much more of them moving around different places. When Lori is crying about her baby seemingly dying inside of her, Hershel tried his best to comfort her. She also tried to comfort Beth and Maggie after Hershel's leg amputation, and when he stopped breathing, she performed CPR on him, ignoring the potential risk of him turning into a walker during the process. She's also the only one besides Beth who is positive that Hershel could survive his amputation, and is happy about Hershel's survival. One of the last happy moments of Lori's life was helping Hershel walk outside for the first time after his amputation. After Lori's death, Hershel was extremely remorseful and took care of Judith, Carl and Rick. Maggie GreeneLori and Maggie had a rough relationship. Maggie was furious with Lori after she was almost killed by a walker on a supply run getting supplies for Lori. After the event, Maggie called Lori a bitch and threw the supplies at her, an action she never apologized for. The supplies were for aborting her baby, something Maggie strongly disagreed with. Eventually Lori and Maggie mended their relationship during the rest of the second season and seemed to become closer. In the prison, when walkers were let in by Andrew, Lori went into labor. Unable to deliver the baby naturally, Lori pleaded with Maggie to cut her open and take care of her baby. At first Maggie declined, but eventually gave in. She apologized as she cut Lori open, crying deeply as she caused her great pain and watched her bleed out. Beth now takes care of Lori's baby, Judith. Maggie makes supply runs to get her formula. The first of said supply runs is seen in the episode "Say the Word". Beth Greene
Lori displays a maternal protectiveness towards Beth and is often seen comforting her. When Beth comes out of her catatonic state she is nursed by Lori, who makes sure she has food and exercise and offers empathy for the loss of Beth's mother (who as a walker was killed outside the barn after attacking Beth). Lori could not support letting Beth commit suicide and argued heatedly with Andrea over the situation. When the group evacuate the farm after it is overrun with walkers, Beth winds up escaping together with Lori and T-Dog. Beth also shows concern about Lori's pregnancy, she shows she is supportive and even informed Lori that the Prison is a safe place for the baby to be born. In the episode Sick, a clearly distressed Beth is shown briefly being protectively hugged by Lori after Beth sees her father unconscious. After Lori's death, Beth looked out for Carl and Judith. PatriciaLori and Patricia didn't interact much, although it is clear that Lori had a high amount of respect for Patricia due to her helping Hershel save Carl's life in "Save the Last One". Lori may have felt slight anger at Patricia at first due to her husband shooting her son, calling him "the idiot that shot my son" but since then felt sorry for her loss and thankful for her son's revival. When Patricia is devoured by walkers in "Beside the Dying Fire, Lori doesn't attempt to shoot Patricia to put her out of her misery, instead saves Beth by pulling her away. Lori takes a last look at Patricia in horror at her death, but not distraught as they were only casual acquaintances who respected each other. However, in "18 Miles Out", Lori remarks to Andrea that Patricia is one of those who helps out, showing that Lori appreciated Patricia's help in laundry, cooking and cleaning. JimmyAlthough Lori and Jimmy never interacted, she showed signs of trust and care for him. She trusted him with Carl in "Judge, Jury, Executioner" when she instructs Carl to play with Beth and Jimmy while the adults negotiate Randall's fate. However, this could also mean that she saw him as immature and could use this characteristic to befriend Carl. OtisOtis and Lori were never shown together, but it was clear that she was mad at him for shooting Carl, and called him "The idiot that shot my son". After Otis' death, Lori seemed to show some remorse and was clearly shocked to learn that it was in fact Shane who sacrificed Otis to the Walkers not just to save Carl's life, but because Shane loves her as well. |

- Sarah Wayne Callies (the actress that portrayed Lori) was in favor of Lori dying while in the prison, just like the comic character. In an interview she stated, "I argued that it was necessary to kill Lori and I feel very strongly that for all of the other deviations we may have from the comic book, killing Lori does something to Rick that is vital for the story and can't be done any other way."
