Almost nothing is known about Joe Sr.'s life before or as the outbreak began, except that he ran a BBQ restaurant with his son, Joe Jr.. He appeared to be at least 6'5".
Joe Sr. is found behind a barricade in his restaurant where he had reanimated. A note is found on a table near the barricade and the note says, "Please do what I couldn't", signed by his son Joe Jr., meaning he was asking for someone to put his father down, as he couldn't do it himself.
This list shows the victims Joe Sr. has killed:
- Possibly numerous counts of zombies
Although Joe and his son aren't seen interacting it was assumed they had a loving father-son relationship. Joe Jr. was deeply saddened by his fathers death and was unable to put his reanimated father down, leaving a note for passers asking them to do what he couldn't.
- Carl Grimes (Zombified)
As Rick and Carl enter the restaurant, they discover a barricade that encloses the reanimated Joe Sr., Rick pulls his hatchet out and swings it into his head, as the hatchet got stuck in the skull of Joe, Carl decides to shoot him in the side of the head.
- "After" (Zombified)
- Joe Sr. is one of the two walkers that are portrayed by Jake Garber, the other being Doug.
- Although being uncredited, it is mentioned in the audio commentary of "After" that Jake Garber portrayed Joe Sr.
- It is also mentioned that they wanted Joe Sr. to look weak as a walker; however, due to Jake Garber's height, it was near impossible to make him look weak.
