Issue 156 is the one-hundred and fifty-sixth issue of Image Comics' The Walking Dead and the sixth and final part of Volume 26: Call To Arms. It was published on July 6th, 2016.

Plot

Negan settles in to the Whisperer community, but Beta starts to question his presence. Alpha asks whether he is challenging her and her commands, but Beta assures her he isn't.

Negan starts to live his life among the Whisperers, such as proving his strength by killing walkers. Most of the Whisperers are amazed of how skilled he is, but Beta doesn't trust him. During the night, Negan sees a Whisperer woman being raped, but ends it and tries to kill the two men trying to rape her. Beta stops him and the leaders tell him this is a way for the woman to prove her strength, which drives Negan mad.

Negan and Alpha have a face-to-face conversation, where they both reveal to each other how cold and dead they are from the inside. Alpha breaks down in front of Negan. Alpha admits she is not strong and misses her daughter, Lydia, and then tells Negan he may belong here. Negan agrees, and slits Alpha's throat open. He then cuts her head off, saying "Wait until Rick gets a look at you...", suggesting he still wants to earn Rick's trust.

Trivia

  • Last appearance of Alpha. (Alive)
  • This issue features the least named characters, along with Issue 50. Technically speaking, Negan is the only actually named character who appears in this issue, as most of the Whisperers identify themselves with code names rather than actual given names.
  • This is one of a handful of issues in which Rick Grimes does not make an appearance.
  • It is promised that more of Heath will be seen in Volume 27: The Whisperer War.
  • Kirkman apologizes in the Letter Hacks about the misleading covers (which suggested that Negan and Alpha would be in a relationship) and states that "Negan has other plans".
  • This issue focuses entirely on the Whisperers and even reveals some interesting facts about them such as that they hunt animals for food with weapons and they sleep in sleeping bags and tents.
  • This issue is the first issue that contains no characters introduced in the first compendium.
