The Greene Family Farm was a farming community in AMC's The Walking Dead, located located near Mert County, Georgia. Originally a farm owned by Hershel Greene, the area served as a safe haven for his family and survivors from Atlanta after it fell to the undead. When the Trials occurred in August 2010, Hershel's farm was spared due to its rural location and protection by the surrounding swamps. Hershel's wife, Annette, and stepson, Shawn, were infected and reanimated, and later placed inside the barn by Hershel under the delusion that they were still alive and could be cured. Over time, his farmhand Otis and nephew Arnold began catching walkers found on their land; many of them family, friends, and neighbors. Eventually, Arnold was also infected and placed in the barn.

In October 2010, a group led by Rick Grimes from Atlanta arrived at the farm after Otis shot Rick's son, Carl, in a hunting accident. While scavenging supplies to save Carl's life; Rick's friend, Shane Walsh, injured Otis and used him as bait to lure the walkers away from him. The group stayed on the farm due to Carl's condition, the pregnancy of Rick's wife, and the search for Sophia Peletier. Tensions arose between Rick and Hershel's people due to their occupation of his land, their violence against the walkers, Shane's murder of Otis, and Glenn Rhee having a relationship with Hershel's daughter, Maggie. After it was discovered the barn was full of walkers, Shane intentionally opened the barn and forced the group to kill them. Among the undead was Sophia, who had been bitten and placed in there by Otis before his death.

Despite the actions Shane took, Hershel agreed to let Rick's people stay on his land after they were attacked by The Living. Rick's group and the farm debated on what to do with one of the Living's people, Randall Culver, after he was injured and left for dead. Against Rick's wishes, Shane murdered Randall and lured Rick into the woods to also kill him due to his jealousy of Rick's leadership and family, but Rick managed to kill Shane first. The cold weather resulted in the swamps freezing, allowing a herd of walkers to walk over the natural defenses and invade the farm. The farm was overrun and partially destroyed when Rick and Carl set the barn ablaze to distract and kill as many as possible. After several deaths, Hershel's family and Rick's group abandoned the farm. Sometime after 2016, Maggie returned to the farm with her son, Hershel Rhee, and retrieved several photographs of her late family.

Pre-Apocalypse[]

The farm has been owned by Hershel’s family for over 160 years. When Hershel took over the farm, a larger farming company attempted to buy the farm from Hershel, offering three times the actual price of the farm. Hershel refused to sell the farm, even when they struggled to grow crops due to a drought. Whenever the company left Hershel food supplies to feed his cattle, he’d leave them and let them rot. Eventually, the company gave up trying to buy the farm from Hershel.

As well as his wife and daughters to help him on the farm, Hershel also had the help of Otis and his wife, Patricia. Beth’s boyfriend, Jimmy, also helped out on the farm.

Post-Apocalypse[]

Even though power and water were cut off in the beginning of the apocalypse, the farm has its own generator that runs on fuel, fifty heads of cattle, five wells that contain fresh water, and one large creek.

After Carl Grimes is accidentally shot by Otis, the group meets Hershel and his family and continue to stay on his land while looking for Sophia Peletier. The survivors spend the first half of the season at the farm using it as a base of operations to find Sophia but after the barn massacre, Hershel wants Rick Grimes' group to leave since they do not respect his rules. Rick continues to get Hershel to reconsider and eventually convinces him about the nature of the walkers. When Rick captures a survivor named Randall, he decides to take him back to the farm since he was still human, in severe pain from his injured leg, and young. They locked him up in the shed, deciding on his fate. Shane Walsh, believing that Rick was wrong with allowing him to live, goes to the shed and takes Randall away to kill him in a plot to kill Rick.

Shane later confronts Rick on the outskirts of the farm, only to be killed. Carl shoots him after he reanimates, killing him. The gunshot noise caught the attention of a massive herd coming from Atlanta, and they head towards the farm. The survivors make a stand at the farm but quickly realize that the farm is lost. The barn is set on fire and burned by Rick and Carl in an attempt to kill some walkers along with Dale's RV beside it. The group leave the farm and re-group on the Vehicle Jammed Highway to decide what to do next.

8 months later, in Season 3, Andrea gives Merle Dixon the location of the farm so he could find his brother Daryl. She later finds out that the group has moved on to a prison.

Its current status is unknown, but it can be assumed that the entire farm burned to the ground, as the barn fire most definitely spread out of control.

At some point in the years following the farm's destruction, Maggie returned and was able to retrieve some family photos, suggesting that the part of the farm is still intact.
