A flare, also sometimes called a fusee, is a type of pyrotechnic that produces a brilliant light or intense heat without an explosion. Flares typically give off a red illumination and sometimes smoke, which are used is used for signaling, illumination, or defensive countermeasures in both civilian and military applications as well as emergency situations.

Usage[]

TV Series[]

In the TV Series, in Season 2 episode, "Bloodletting", Shane is seen with Otis at the Cranwall High School's FEMA medical center, both using flares retrieved from a police car to distract the walkers as they moved to recover supplies from the medical trailer. It was successful momentarily until the flares burned out and the noises from the flares subsided, drawing the walker's attention to Shane and Otis and the sounds of metal canisters and medical supplies clanging in their backpacks.

A flare gun is also used by Nicholas when they attempt to retrieve the pieces to fix the power grid in Alexandria.

Flare guns are used by many other Alexandrians trying to draw the quarry herd away in "First Time Again".

Comic[]

Flares are also used in the comic by the Supply Runners of the Alexandria Safe-Zone as a means of signaling for help or back-up in dangerous situations. In Issue 69, two Alexandria supply runners, Heath and Scott are pinned down by walkers. Heath deploys a flare, which alerts Aaron and Rick to their position, allowing Aaron and Rick to save them and retrieve the supplies they had with them.

Survival Instinct[]

Flares are featured in Survival Instinct as distraction items, they are used to distract and lure walkers to areas away from Daryl. Flares are more effective against walkers at night, as the radius of the flare's light is increased allowing walkers from far away areas to become distracted.
