A Bow is a flexible piece of material which shoots aerodynamic projectiles called arrows. A string joins the two ends and when the string is drawn back, the ends of the bow are flexed. When the string is released, the potential energy of the flexed stick is transformed into the velocity of the arrow. Archery is the art or sport of shooting arrows from bows.
Overview[]
Three Variations have so far been seen of the Bow.
- Self Bow: A bow made from one piece of wood. Seen wielded by Shumpert.
- Compound: A bow with mechanical aids to help with drawing the bowstring. Usually, these aids are cams at the tips of the limbs and a release that attaches to a loop on the bowstring and releases the arrow with the use of a trigger. Seen wielded by Haley, Len, unnamed Woodbury guards, Lou and Hérisson.
- Recurve Bow: A bow with the limbs curving away from the archer. The limbs straighten out as the bow is drawn and the return of the limbs to their curved state after release of the arrow adds extra velocity to the arrow. Seen wielded by unnamed Woodbury Guards.
Pre-Apocalypse[]
Before the outbreak, bows were a common and popular weapon, particularly for hunting.
Post-Apocalypse[]
Original TV Series[]
Several people use bows, including Shumpert, Haley. the Woodbury Army, Len, Harley, and Dianne.
After running low on ammo, the Saviors use melee weapons, including bows, against the Militia. The arrows are dipped in walker guts so as to infect anyone who is only wounded, cause them to die and then later reanimate. Although Negan intends for this to be a warning, Simon tries to turn it into a massacre while Negan has gone missing. However, the Saviors attack is repelled, although a number of people are killed due to the tainted weapons. The only survivor of the attack to be shot with one of the arrows is Tara Chambler who was purposefully shot by Dwight with a clean arrow.
Six years after Rick Grimes' presumed death, bows and spears are more common weapons than guns and are used extensively against both walkers and human enemies. Yumiko, Carol and Alden in particular prefer the bow and arrow.
During the Whisperer attack on the Hilltop, a number of Whisperers fire flaming arrows into the structure, having dipped their arrows into collected tree sap.
Following her return after several years away, Maggie Rhee is shown to prefer the bow and arrow as her weapon, killing a Whisperer that is about to attack Elijah from behind.
After moving to the Commonwealth, Carol and many other former Coalition soldiers stop using their old weapons with Carol even briefly using one of the Commonwealth's AR-15s. However, as the Commonwealth and the Coalition prepare to go their separate ways, Carol resumes carrying her bow and arrow again. Breaking into the Commonwealth Jail, Carol uses an arrow to wound a Commonwealth soldier in the leg before taking his gun. When Lance Hornsby turns a gun on Daryl and Carol, Carol kills Lance with an arrow to the neck. As neither Daryl nor Carol bother to destroy his brain, Lance later reanimates and joins the herd that overruns the Commonwealth. When the zombified Lance arrives at the gates of the Estates, he still has Carol's arrow sticking out of his neck.
Although Elijah is typically armed with a pair of kamas, he briefly switches to a bow and arrow during the mission to Fort Connors, while acting as a guard for the Hilltop and later after an encounter with a variant of walkers dubbed climbers, one of which had grabbed Lydia's staff. As a result, Elijah berates Lydia for taking the risk of putting a walker down with a knife rather than letting him use his bow on it for safety. Elijah switches back to his kamas shortly thereafter as he, Lydia, Jerry, Aaron, Luke and Jules put down several walkers.
Fear the Walking Dead[]
Cooper uses a bow while taking down several zombified inmates, shooting two of them and saving Madison Clark from one. It's presumably stolen by Walker and his forces along with the rest of the militia's supplies.
Daryl Series[]
Lou and some of the kids from École Maternelle Simone Veil use bows as their weapons, with one shooting at Daryl's group on the road.
Later, Lou and Hérisson use their bows to give Daryl cover from the walkers in the moat of La Tarasque's Castle while Moof lifts him to safety. After seeing Julien amongst the walkers, Lou tries to use her bow to put down her friend, but can't bring herself to do it so Daryl shoots Julien with his crossbow instead.
Fallou Boukar carries a bow and arrow, briefly threatening Daryl's group with it and then temporarily handing it over to the guards outside of Demimonde.
Telltale Series[]
Marlon, Willy and Aasim favor bows with Marlon's bow being a compound bow. Following Marlon's death, several of the residents of Ericson's Boarding School use it for themselves against the Delta, primarily Clementine. However, Marlon's bow is lost after falling off of the broken bridge.
