His group was scavenging a store across the street from Glenn and Heath who were recovering antibiotics for Scott. Glenn and Heath witnesses the group sacrifice one of their own members to the zombies to escape.

The scavengers heard Glenn and Heath departing on motorcycles and decided to tail them.^[1] The group heard the gunshot as Rick Grimes was executing Pete Anderson, thus giving them the location of the Safe-Zone.^[2]

Andrea shot and killed Derek as he was demanding and threatening to be given entry into the Alexandria Safe-Zone. However, killing Derek and his scavengers may have been a mistake for the Alexandria survivors, as it resulted in attracting the attention of many walkers in the surrounding areas.
