A crossbow is a weapon consisting of a bow mounted on a stock that shoots projectiles, often called bolts, quarrels or locks, with the help of a trigger. The medieval crossbow was called by many names, most of which derived from the word ballista, a torsion engine resembling a crossbow in appearance.
Pre-Apocalypse[]
Historically, crossbows played a significant role in the warfare of East Asia, Europe, and the Mediterranean. Their design is the foundation of the arquebus and by extension, all modern firearms. Today, they are used primarily for shooting sports, hunting, and when shooting in silence is an important consideration.
Post-Apocalypse[]
Comic Series[]
In the comic series Dwight's signature weapon is a crossbow.
Original TV Series[]
A Horton Scout HD 125 is used by Daryl Dixon throughout the whole show. A Stryker Strykezone 380 crossbow is taken from Morgan Jones' safe house by Michonne Hawthorne in "Clear" and Daryl replaces his Horton Scout HD 125 with the Stryker Crossbow as shown in the "Arrow on the Doorpost". It's briefly stolen from Daryl in "A" by Terminus, but Carol recovers and returns it to him. In "Always Accountable", this crossbow is stolen by Dwight and Sherry after they betray Daryl. However, Daryl later reclaims it in "Twice as Far". After Rick's group is captured by the Saviors, Dwight is seen using the crossbow again which became his main weapon. Daryl was later given a PSE Fang 350 by Richard in "New Best Friends". In "Dead or Alive Or", Daryl began to reuse his Stryker Strykezone 380 Crossbow again after retrieving it from Dwight.
Following the end of the Savior Conflict, Daryl combines his crossbow with two knives for hand-to-hand combat.
During the fight with Montanio, Kelly retrieves Daryl's dropped crossbow and briefly uses it to threaten the Reaper.
After joining the Commonwealth Army, Daryl apparently abandons using his crossbow for good. Instead, Daryl begins using one of the Commonwealth's AR-15s. Daryl's crossbow is one of the weapons offered to Sebastian Milton for his advanced military training, but he ultimately rejects it. When Sebastian falls into trouble fighting a walker a few minutes later, Daryl grabs his crossbow and uses it to save Sebastian, much to Sebastian's annoyance.
After the Coalition and the Commonwealth go their separate ways thanks to Carol's deal with Pamela, Daryl and Rosita turn in their AR-15's and return to using their old weapons again. However, he primarily uses a stolen AR-15 during the following conflict with the Commonwealth soldiers.
While defending the Commonwealth from a massive herd, Daryl uses his crossbow against the walkers.
World Beyond[]
The Perimeter uses crossbows as one of their primary weapons alongside spears.
Shortly after first arriving at the Perimeter, Iris Bennett takes one of their crossbows into the woods with her at night. Encountering a patrolling CRM soldier, Iris shoots him in the shoulder with her crossbow, leading to a fight which ends with Iris stabbing the soldier to death.
Later, during the gunfight between the CRM, the Perimeter, Will Campbell, Silas Plaskett and Dennis Graham, Elton Ortiz grabs one of the Perimeter's crossbows off of a barrel and arms himself with it. However, he never fires it during the fight and drops the weapon again once the CRM team has been defeated.
Daryl Series[]
Along with his original knives, Daryl appears to have lost his original crossbow on his way to France. He later selects a new one from the Abbey of Saint Bernadette's armory.
When the Power of the Living attacks the abbey, at least one of the nuns arms herself with a crossbow. During the battle that follows, Richard is killed with an arrow to the neck by the nuns.
Despite having a new crossbow, Daryl appears to favor his melee weapons against his enemies in France. Daryl's first use of a crossbow is to put down the zombified Julien in order to have to spare Lou from doing it.
In flashbacks, Daryl uses his original crossbow to capture walkers, outfitting his arrows with a line that he shoots through one walker and into another one.
Telltale Series[]
In the Telltale Series, the crossbow is used by many characters, such as Jolene, Troy and Peter Randall. It is also Minerva's signature and main weapon.
Survival Instinct[]
Shortly after the outbreak, Merle Dixon reveals that he had hung onto and stored his brother Daryl's crossbow at Jake's, supposedly for "sentimental reasons." During Merle's massacre of the Savage Sons Motorcycle Club, the crossbow ends up on the body of one of the bikers. After being ambushed and having his stuff stolen from him, Daryl retrieves his knife, puts down the biker after he reanimates and retrieves his crossbow, using a few bolts retrieved from around the bar to fight his way back outside and chase after the rest of the gang and Merle.
