Don't take my grandson.
―Abuela to Rick Grimes about Felipe, her grandson.[src]

"Abuela" (Spanish for "grandmother", real name unknown) is a survivor of the outbreak in AMC's The Walking Dead. She is an elderly resident of the barricaded nursing home, protected by the members of the Vatos gang.

Overview[]

Abuela is shown to be a somewhat senile, but kind-hearted old woman. In the apocalypse, she is shown to be innocently naive and oblivious. When Rick's group and the Vatos gang are about to get into a shootout, Abuela enters, unaware of what's going on and tells Felipe that Mr. Gilbert needs his medicine. When she notices Rick's group, she believes that Rick is going to arrest Felipe, showing she may be unaware of the outbreak going on, though it could just be due to her old age or some kind of illness. Thanks to Abuela's kindness, she unintentionally manages to deescalate the situation, and no one dies from Rick's group and the Vatos gang.

Pre-Apocalypse[]

Atlanta Nursing Home[]

It is assumed that Abuela spent most of her life living in Atlanta. She is now an elderly woman who lives in a nursing home and is being taken care of by a nurse named Felipe, her grandson. She spends time and has gotten to know the nursing home's other residents, such as Mr. Gilbert. When the outbreak occurred, the nursing home staff abandoned her and the other residents, leaving her in the care of Felipe, Guillermo, and the Vatos gang members. She may be suffering from some form of medical illness, as she seems to be unaware of what has happened to the world around her and continues to believe that society is still functioning.

Post-Apocalypse[]

Season 1[]

"Vatos"[]

As Rick, T-Dog, and Daryl negotiate with Guillermo to trade Miguel for a kidnapped Glenn, tensions run high, but before anything can happen, Abuela appears and intervenes, calling Felipe for help, and explaining the situation with one of the residents. She is upset over a man named Mr. Gilbert, who is suffering an asthma attack. The woman then notices an armed Rick in his uniform and pleads with him not to arrest Felipe, explaining that he is a good person, and that he is needed at the nursing home. She takes Rick by the hand and leads his group out of the garage (saying, "He needs his medicine") and into the nursing home, where elderly residents and nurses reside. Glenn, other survivors, and Vatos gang members are then seen assisting Mr. Gilbert with his inhaler.

Death[]

Killed By
  • Unknown Cause

At some point, everyone at the nursing home was killed.[1]

Although it is not known how Abuela died, in a deleted scene for "What Lies Ahead", Rick's group returns to the nursing home to find all of the Vatos dead due to another unknown group of people having executed them and walkers invading the nursing home afterwards. It's possible that this event still happened (sans Rick's group returning after the CDC explosion).
