"Abuela" (Spanish for "grandmother") is an elderly woman living in a barricaded nursing home along with several other elderly residents. The home is protected by two of the remaining staff, along with members of the Vatos gang.
It is assumed that Abuela spent most of her life living in Atlanta. She is now an elderly woman who lives in a nursing home and is being taken care of by a nurse named Felipe, her grandson. She spends time and has gotten to know the nursing home's other residents, such as Mr. Gilbert. When the outbreak occurred, the nursing home staff abandoned her and the other residents, leaving her in the care of Felipe, Guillermo, and the Vatos gang members. She may be suffering from some form of medical illness, as she seems to be unaware of what has happened to the world around her and continues to believe that society is still functioning.
As Rick, T-Dog, and Daryl negotiate with Guillermo to trade Miguel for Glenn, tensions run high, but before anything could happen, Abuela appears and intervenes, calling Felipe for help, and explaining the situation with one of the residents. She is upset over a man named Mr. Gilbert, who is suffering an asthma attack. The woman then notices an armed Rick in his uniform and pleads with him to not arrest Felipe, explaining that he is a good person, and that he is needed at the nursing home. She takes Rick by the hand and leads his group out of the garage (saying "this is menacing") and into the nursing home, where elderly residents and nurses reside. Glenn, others survivors, and Vatos gang members are then seen assisting Mr. Gilbert with his inhaler.
Abuela and Mr. Gilbert seemed to be close friends and she had a fierce protection over his well-being. This is shown by how worried Abuela is about Mr. Gilbert and his asthma problem.
Felipe is the grandson of Abuela and they care deeply about each other. This is shown by how Abuela reacts to Rick when she sees that he was a police officer, explaining how good Felipe is and begging Rick not to arrest and take him away.
Miguel is the grandson of Abuela, although they were never seen interacting. It is assumed that they had a basic grandmother-grandson relationship.
Guillermo is the leader of the group residing in the Atlanta Nursing Home and is keeping Abuela, Mr. Gilbert, and the rest of the elderly people safe and well-supplied. When Rick, Daryl, and T-Dog go into the nursing home armed, Guillermo warns Felipe to move Abuela to safety, showing he at least cares about her well-being.
- 104. "Vatos"
- Her real name is unknown, as she is only referred to as "Abuela," the Spanish translation for "Grandma."
